To compensate for not having Odyssey, I'm playing through 3D Land (for the first time).

And it's really very good.  Nice, bite-sized levels.  Challenge about right - can rush through fairly easily, but easy to miss stars if so doing - and production values obviously up the wazoo.

I must say I'm really glad I went for a New 3DS.  Despite the nay-sayers, I now find I can play with 3D enabled, which I could really do with the OG.  And this does add another dimension (bah-dum) to the better games: I stopped playing 3D Land before, but am now definitely going to crack on...
  • Good stuff, great game.

  • 3D on of off, 3D Land is a fantastic game.
  • Was thinking earlier on it would be great if they did a refresh on All Stars - with the 3DS and WiiU games on it.

    Agreed, 2D Wii/Wii U and DS/3DS ones as well.

Would be an amazing package with all 6 games.

After playing Odyssey, I'd rather have a remake of 64 and Sunshine in the Odyssey engine than remasters of the more recent ones.

Do you find it somewhat depressing to watch? Insofar as no-one would ever force themselves to those extremes minus an audience, and that lends it a bit of a Chinese Olympian vibe.

It's that crossover when challenging yourself becomes the dogged pursuit of a performance for praise, despoiling the game's intrinsic pleasure like a choke-porn scene.

So in Odyssey, you have some mini games, with a now ubiquitous online leaderboard.
There's a notoriously simple minigame on there... A one button challenge...

Looked at the top of the leaderboard...

    Small Odyssey spoiler below:
    Spoiler:
    Seriously, why?

With the Mario Maker level though, the rule of beating your own level to upload them justifies the post on the last page right? It's a similar thing.

Just like vs fighter tourneys are.

  • Finally got to play this (edit - Odyssey - curse you multiple Mario threads) last night, and loved it.  If I'm honest I was a little unsure for the first hour or so, the tutorial area seemed oddly bland, and I was not best keen on Nintendo's push for me to adopt the two joy-con playstyle.  After playing it for more time than was probably healthy however, I'm converted.

There's just so much inventiveness and playfulness that I spent a lot of my time just grinning like a kid.  I realised that I haven't really enjoyed a Mario this much since Sunshine (I'm one of the rare few who preferred it to 64 - I know, bring on the pitchforks).

I've just made it to NDC.  Favourite thing so far was...
    Spoiler:
Immensely enjoyable, and satisfyingly silly.  Can't wait to play more.  (But will have to..)

some of the top mm players and smw players were speedrunning a mini level where you're a snowball on a course (can't be arsed to spoiler that) on a race. Lots of restarts but I think he got a top 3 time in the end.

  • i've just worked out what makes the best mario games the best. The music.

The music in smw and m64 is so much better than any of the other games

  • Super Mario Bros WiiU is just great.
  • Yep. I absolutely loved it. So did the kids.
I am a FREE. I am not MAN. A NUMBER.
  • It's the perfect Dad-kid game. The boy and I played it for four hours straight tonight.
  • Good to see another fan, great game.

I've banged on about it many times but I'll say it again...

If they replaced the tired astetics of the 'New Bros.' series and made it 'New Super Mario World' instead I think it'd have faired better, both critically and sales wise.

The core game is there, but it was dressed as just another game in the New series which had seen too many entries in too short a time upon its release.
    オレノナハ エラー ダ
  • Yeah I'm not a fan of the New aesthetic but the backgrounds in this at least are lovely.

The game itself is just so much fun. It's brilliant in single and multiplayer, the boost and challenge modes are great, it's proper hard with actual save points that need to be reached, it utilises the Wiimotes brilliantly while also using the touchpad effectively and hilariously. The dlc is fantastic. I don't really have a bad word to say about it.

If I was nitpicking I wish they'd kept the map from World that made it obvious which levels have an alternative exit.
  • Yep defo, that red dot instead of yellow in SMW really helped.
    オレノナハ エラー ダ
  • I didn't play much of it before I got rid, but I did enjoy the challenge mode.  If they release any more standard 2D platformers I hope they flesh that mode out a bit, it definitely suits traditional Mario games.
  • It's pretty well fleshed out on the WiiU tbf. The post-completion stuff is great. It's a game of many parts yet feels so coherent. It out-parties Mario Party with all the extra multiplayer modes yet is as satisfying a SP 2D Mario since World.

  • I can see why WiiU's are going to cost so much in the future. You can't replicate these experiences on any other console and I suspect the WiiU might be the most collectable console ever.

This was incredible design that I never appreciated until way later in life.

    Potentially.
  • I know this isn't the Odyssey thread but the assisted mode in it is bloody genius. Means my boy can play a lot more not helped by me, and feel like it's him accomplishing things

I love these little inclusions. It's not much but for those with young kids it makes all the difference in the world. Treasured memories.
