PEECEE HELP
  • HELP MEEEE MIGHTY SAGES!!!

I have bought the EW-7811Un USB wireless adapter from EdiMax. Here is the message i sent to their support line:
    Operating System:
    Windows7 Home Premium

    Describe the Issue:
I have just puchased this product, but as soon as I try to connect to the internet I get a blue screen and my computer shuts down. The blue screen error is: irql_not_less_or_equal

I went to the Windows 7 Compatibility website which directed me here: http://www.edimax.com/en/support_detail.php?pd_id=347&pl1_id=1&pl2_id=44, So i downloaded the new drivers, uninstalled the old ones, installed the new ones, rebooted and tried again but no luck.

Everything is fine up until it connects to the internet. I can see wireless networks, I put the wireless key in, but as soon as it connects I get a blue screen.

I successfully installed the USB adapter on a Windows Vista laptop (with the drivers from your website) with no problems. Connected to my internet fine and got good speeds as well. The device is fine.

    Thank you.

They have washed their hands of the issue as the device isn't faulty, it's just my machine.

My Google-fu shows a few complaints of blue-screening with this product but no resolution.

wtf do I try and do now?

Is an anti-virus interfering with it, some have a habit of getting all clawy with your network connections, esp adding them.

Try disabling it temporarily? (don't turn off firewall).

All my poking suggests that the drivers are wrapped rather badly along with BSOD there are overheating problems too and yes, no solution for Win7.

The issue seems solvable if you are on *nix so you could try getting drivers for the RealTek chipset it carries.

Then and again it might just be worth getting a new one if either solutions work though keep an eye on your machines temperature and have a kickoff with the supplier.

@mod what did you end up doing for your multimedia mission?

  • Thanks guys. Will try again later.

This is just everything I hate about PCs. You buy a product that says Windows 7 compatible, the reviews are good, the website has Windows 7 drivers, the Windows compatibility website says "yup, this works, go nuts" then the fucking thing still is unusable.

I appreciate that there is so much difference between every machine, but it just royally sucks when you’re in the 1% of people who have got just the wrong config/conflicting drivers/anti-virus combination to screw everything up.

I've always gone with scan.co.uk - think a few people will say the same.

Alternately, if you have the spondoolies then Alienware.

  • I'm more interested in high performance audio than purely for gaming. So alienware isn't the one. Scan looks good but i like the simplicity of pc specialists build your own bit.

If you can tell the difference between one end of a screwdriver from the other then building yourself isn't that hard.

See here for when I did it a couple months ago, particularly the suggested build links

It's debatable how much you save in the end, esp when adding a Windows licence, and whether a warranty is something you're willing to give up.

I've been plodding through with Powerpoint. The picture effects in 2013 are letting me produce something quite nice, but damn it's slow work and would much prefer a more streamlined option.

TBH I'm close to going back to starting the search again, maybe even bite the bullet on some low priced software.
  • I think that is the best way to go but I might get someone else to do it. I'm quite hard pushed for free time (OK, i'm lazy) and can imagine the pieces of the PC sitting around for a while before i get it together to put them together. I know its probably better and cheaper (?) to buy the parts and do it yourself but i'll probs take the easy option.

The slowest part for me was reading the instructions to work out which wire went where. If I was to do it again it'd take 1/5th of the time. It's quite satisfying though, assuming it works. Especially the meeting point of electronics and physical.
  • My mate who lives round the corner is a computer/electrical hardware genius so i could always get him to help. I think from pc specialist the installation costs next to nothing though so its tempting to just get it done. I can imagine its a very good practical skill though, always handy knowing how to put a PC together.
  • Can anyone recommend some decent (and free) antivirus software?

    Thanks.

Avast can be frightening when it unexpectedly shouts at you that it's updating.

    No, it's a good thing.
  • Cheers. I thought Avast was probably the one to go for but I wasn't sure if something better was out there nowadays.

Might have to format my laptop, it's chugging a bit at the moment. Not sure why.
  • Why is the query I built to find unmatched records, USING THE ACCESS WIZARD, returning me every single line of the table?

I have table A and table B and I want to see where in A (the list of events) there is a doctor that isn't in B (the list of clinicians). The wizard worked for locations and tests but it's not working for this.

here is the raw SQL text:
    SELECT BHI_GP_EVENTS.[Clinician Code]
    FROM BHI_GP_EVENTS LEFT JOIN PATH_CLINICIANS ON BHI_GP_EVENTS.[Clinician Code] = PATH_CLINICIANS.[Clinician Code]
    WHERE (((PATH_CLINICIANS.[Clinician Code]) Is Null));

Still getting peeps to make Doctor databases, huh.

    Don't use the wizard.

"Use the WHERE clause to exclude rows you do not want grouped, and use the HAVING clause to filter records after they have been grouped."
  • Thanks, I'll give it a go. Total Access noob, but this was getting cumbersome to do in Excel with lookups (even if I could just do it in half the time it's taken me to work this shit out).
  • Sooo, I'm having a lot of problems with my laptop. Bear with me, because I'm not terribly savvy with PC's or troubleshooting. And I'm not the brightest.

Anyway, my laptop has been grinding to a halt recently. It's started taking an age to boot up, is extremely unresponsive, locks up for 5 seconds or so on a regular basis, and seems to even be struggling with loading web pages (when I can access them quickly and with no problems on my iPod). I've also started getting the odd blue screen crashout, including a STOP: 0x00000024... whatever that means.

I've defragmented my hard drive, ran tests with Avast and haven't come across any obvious problems. I've also uninstalled a variety of junk in an effort to speed things up. Nothing has worked.

I've been considering trying a complete system restore, but I'm worried it could be a hardware fault that's causing the issues. I've had the laptop about 6 months and taking it back to the vendor is an option, though I'd prefer to avoid the hassle if at all possible.

    Any advice?

I simply don't remember SQL syntax any more, don't need to. What you describe should be simple enough using the visual query builder though.

Tiger, sounds somewhat like a hardware fault.

    You could try

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Diagnosing-memory-problems-on-your-computer

Or the Error Checking program under C:\ Properties>>Tools.
  • Memory would be my guess too.
  • The actual extracted data that I was comparing, although it looked the same, wasn't. I don't know how on earth this happened but in one of the tables the clinician data had a line break before everything, so as far as Access was concered nothing matched.

I concede idiocy on this occassion.

Fenton you didn't need to join, I'd have just aliased the table, looks like you defined clinician code but didn't populate it, so the where brought everything as it was always =NULL though my inner and outer joins are rusty as hell

  • Thanks Mod.

I tried both those tests, but they didn't come up with anything. Not sure what to make of that... I guess taking it back to where I bought it is the sensible option, huh.

I suppose. You could back up all your data and do a clean install/recovery. (clean would be better). You've got the arse of installing all your programs then though.

If there's a green Genuine sticker on the underside you can down load the windows .iso and install from that.
