I do have a degree. And, I should say, I'm not entirely ruling out long term training, I just have to feel reasonably sure that I'm training for something that I'm going to stick with.

How about publishing EFL stuff? Editing, proofreading, creating materials for teaching books - it's a way to use what you already know without having to actually teach. I was looking into it a while back and there were quite often jobs popping up in OUP, for instance.
As for helping people, join groups in your spare time, it's probably more useful and you're only wasting it playing Destiny anyway.
Charity work nowadays sounds like constantly competing for a pittance of state funds - I find the whole set up kind of wrong even though it still helps people. -

Thankfully they tend to avoid places like lofts and under floorboards. Plumbers do have to work around shitty toilets though, worth bearing in mind before anyone starts to act on impulse. -

Quite. I taught Arabic speakers English. I had enough Arabic to survive, but was a great distance from fluent.

That's the one. I do remember that, certainly in Egypt, clucking your tongue does the job just as well. Better in fact as it makes you sound like less of a tourist.
I was thinking about that a while ago, but was put off by a journalist friend of the family.
