I just started Long War 2, having never played it before.  It's very difficult to get into.  I didn't realise that you need to infiltrate before the mission actually starts before going in, otherwise that 'extremely light enemy forces' turns out to be 4 groups of 5 guys continuously appearing out of the fog and wrecking my whole crew.

I'll restart for the third time with this knowledge and maybe it'll show the gold lining.  I've heard very good things about LW2 and I don't have the funds for War of the Chosen yet.
It's a goddamn snoozefest out there.
  • Been wondering why War of the Chosen still hasn't had any discounts on PSN. I guess it's because they're now releasing an XCom 2 Collection, with the main game, WotC and all the other DLC. Bit surprising they're asking £80 for it though. The main game and the old DLC have been on sale for peanuts a number of times. But given that it looks like I'll be waiting a while longer for WotC.
  • Been playing this and enjoying it a lot. Game runs like a dog on PS4, unfortunately, even with patches, and I’ve done a restart now that I kinda understand what I’m doing.

Have a B&B squad which is cool. But it makes losing anyone absolute torture. It also means I’m RPing people - I really wanted to give g.man holotargeting for that sweet team aim bonus, but I knew there’s no way he’d turn down Heavy Ordnance in real life.
  • Are you playing War of the Chosen or just the standard version? The standard one at least works properly now most of the time even the framerate is still awful. WotC is a buggy mess.
  • Standard. Still a mess. Can’t imagine how bad it used to be.
  • Well at least the memory leak has gone that increased the loading times as the game went on. Otherwise it's just generally more stable IIRC.

I would really like to do an Ironman run of WotC but it's just too unreliable. Sony should never have allowed it a release on PS4 in that state, and the lack of a proper patch after all this time is a joke.

Won't be buying anything else they do no matter how good it is, unless it works perfectly first.
  • Yeah - it’s a real shame. It’s a fantastic game, and I’m muddling through despite performance issues. But I’d probably actively discourage anyone from getting it, despite how good it is.
  • I’m running seriously low on troops. Kept most people alive but the sick list is long as fuck. Barely have enough for a full squad at the mo - the game really does take injured troops out of action if they get properly battered.

That’s not a complaint - it works and matches the theme of the game. But the last couple of missions have been a real struggle without any of my main grenadiers or specialists.

In other news, Tempy is my main Ranger and is absolutely kickass. Dude wrecks. If he dies at any point I’ll be inconsolable.
  • Have you got an advanced warfare centre? if not then try and prioritise it and put an engineer in there.
There are a few things that really make a big dent in the initial difficulty on this. That's one of them.
  • Yeah, and I’ve upgraded the squad armour. But it’s possible I haven’t been making enough use of some of my rooms. Shall have to dig deeper.

Coincidentally, Xcom2 is on offer on Steam for 16€. Good deal.
  • I'd be inconsolable if I died too if that's any consolation Cinty?

Picked this back up today, started over but soon remembered why I jacked it in in the first place. Can I have some pro tips on how to avoid setting off a group of enemies on my last or second to last action? As I'm being fucked off by the way the AI cheats and moves enemies that weren't even on the map into flanking positions on my squad when I trigger them.

I could creep the map and hold an action back for firing/overwatch, but that goes against the time limits the game enforces so doesn't really seem feasible.

I want to enjoy this as I did the last game, but it's not looking likely as the bullshit is just too strong. I'd move the difficulty down if I thought it would help but I know it won't.

Bring on the Git Gud comments I suppose.
  • The main trick is not to move anyone beyond your furthest forward character towards the end of your turn. When not in combat, I'd usually move a couple of characters quite far forward at the start of a turn, and if they don't trigger anything then bunch the other characters up behind them, and put a few on overwatch.

When you're actually in combat you've still got to be careful. I wouldn't, for example, send a ranger running further into the map for a melee kill unless it's the start of a turn and I think I could handle triggering more enemies (and unless you know there aren't any more on the map, of course).

Also, at the start of a mission, when you're in concealed mode, enemies walking near you won't set off your overwatch and can actually flank you. It's an odd one to get used to, but basically it's better to attack first and blow your cover than let them get too close.
  • If you have to rush, rush with your first few actions, last few actions to fortify and cover. Check out some players on youtube because there’s definitely an art to moving and postioning to avoid triggering pods. The turn limits can seem harsh but they honestly tend to be fairly well judged. It’s definitely got its moments of BS, but that’s turn based strategy.

I had a read back through the last few pages and saw you and Tempy on about the same stuff earlier. Just got to get used to the cheapness of it I suppose.

Stuff like the ranger slash, I need to get used to how that works again. Am I right in thinking that any attack ends your turn, even if you have two actions available? I'd quite like to shoot then move, shoot twice in one turn, use slash then scarper into cover etc.
  • Another thing is it gets easier if you can unlock the right stuff quickly.

Build the facility that lets you expand your squad size and complete the first lot of weapons and then armour research whenever you get the chance. Those, combined with the abilities your longer-surviving characters get from promotions, will make a big difference.

Talking of bullshit, after setting up an ambush on a couple of guys, two on overwatch when the grenade goes in, both miss their 68% shots? Then a third miss later on in that mission. Had to use another 'nade on that sucker, literally unshootable.
  • The way the game deals with pods are definitely bullshit and feel counterintuitive, but you just have to learn it sadly. The game is worth it IMO. The timers are tight but as i’ve said since day one they make such thematic sense that I wouldn’t want the game without them.

Extra squad positions are definitely top of the list, but what else is a priority? Don't know anything about the base stuff.

Rangers end up pretty badass, like being able to take out multiple enemies then return to cover. But you need promotions to get to that point. The first ranger promotion I always choose is the one that increases your hit percentage, making it 100% against most enemies, which is pretty much essential IMO.

Thankfully that's the sort of thing that you have to deal with less as you progress. Well, as long as you can keep some characters from dying and get them to higher ranks.

The beginning of the game is arguably the toughest part, in fact. Rely on grenades as much as possible for guaranteed hits. Once you get a few sergeants you'll notice the hit percentages increase.

The first lot of weapons (plasma?), definitely. At the very least get the assault rifle upgraded, and give it to rangers as well as specialists.

You'll probably want the advanced warfare centre pretty quickly too. It reduces recovery time from injuries, which makes a big difference.

    Edit: Not plasma, magnetic.

I tended to skip plasma and get lasers.

Or that could be the other way round. Caveat of don't blame me when your best guy/girl dies because your guns suck for a bit!

Guns sucking isn't much of a problem so far, the enemies dropping into the map in a staged pincer movement after I destroy a relay (fair enough I suppose, keep you on you toes and that), coupled with the only safe spot for my squad being on a two story building's roof is more of an issue.

It was a desperate move as I couldn't take out both sides of the pincer in one move, nor could I take out one side and get into cover from the rest. I was basically fucked, I even had the classic XCOM MOMENT of missing consecutive high percentage shots (like, the main advantage of the elevated position) before the inevitable grenade came in and took out two of my guys with the ludicrous fall damage.

There are times when THAT'S XCOM!™ is really just THAT'S BULLSHIT!™ and the line is crossed too often for my liking. Back on the pile you go, I did try.
  • Sometimes you lose missions like that. I had it happen a few times. The rooftop fall in particular is something I think nearly every Xcom 2 player has happen before they learn.

Learn what? To eat the damage on the ground and accept the losses?

I've played it before, so I knew about the roof bullshit, but I didn't have another option.
  • To roll with the punches and lose a mission or two. Sometimes shit goes bad, I’ve lost prize players on final turns before, it sucks but it’s part of the game.
