Dreams - by Media Molecule - Out now
  • Yeah, I'm really curious to see how it will do, hopefully Sony really gets behind it in terms of marketing. It's still a bit early to see really fully developed games that players have made yet, but it won't be too long.

Nice thing about the sharing aspect is that many people will end up specialising in a particular aspect, like making really good trees, music, characters, game mechanics/physics demos. And that stuff can get used by anyone in the games they make, so you'll probably see people commisioning custom things from these top creators. Really cool.
  • It has some gameification meta stuff that tries to help people figure out what they really like to do to -

  • I can't stop watching the streams of people playing this. It's really impressive how quickly you can jump into a dream, loads incredibly fast due to the excellent engine. It's like Warioware but every genre possible and it never ends.
  • It is very interesting,  I do find it interesting that we’re always complaining about sequels and lack of innovation and when ever anything comes along a little bit different out come all the nay sayers... it’s not for me ...

Lol. Genuinely no lookin for an argument here, it’s just an observation. As you were.

I’m not buying it obviously it looks shit,

  • For same-screen MP I can see this being brilliant nonsense fun, there will be playlists full to the brim with wacky little minigames.

  • There is a time when I would've loved this. Even now, if I was only going to get a few games in the next year or so I'd definitely want it.

But as it stands I just won't have time to do it justice, at least as a creator. It's one thing playing an epic like Zelda over a period of weeks or months, but here you've actually got to learn how it all works.

I'm still interested to see how it turns out though, if only as a player. Some people will produce some outstanding stuff, so it'll probably be worth getting at some point.
  • I may join as a player at some point too, it's the sort of thing that could be great to own once best of lists start popping up online, or the cream rises to the top with an in-game rating system.

  • To celebrate the dropping of @mediamolecule #DreamsPS4 NDA today here are a few sample screenshots from a Europa surface test area we're currently jamming in. Stunning engine, 4 sculpts, copy n' pasted 3000 times. 6% thermo usage total. More images coming soon :)

    Beautiful page, this 'un.
  • I think I once said that I would be totally happy with Dreams if it turned out that I could do nothing other than just walk around galleries of weird sculptures and environments that people have made, and here we are -

Was watching a stream earlier where someone was trying to perfect a thing that procedurally generates trees, snow and cliffs over basic terrain. Really quite amazing what can be achieved.

This looks fucking amazing, fair play. Think I'm in just to experience it.
  • Don't suppose it lets people create VR stuff by any chance does it?
  • IIRC isn't it PSVR support from launch?
  • Holy heck, I'm in then.  One game to rule them all - some of the top tier homebrew stuff is bound to be better than plenty of the VR tut on PSN.
  • Yeah it's going to be fascinating to see how the VR experience stacks up, I'm wondering if they will have another beta period or two between now and release to get some more testing for things like PSVR. Will be keeping and eye on it. Generally from all the streams and vids I've been watching there has been shockingly few bugs, some small stuff on a per-level basis, but not crashes to dashboard or freezes I think. I think the story levels and tutorials they are making will take a while to complete, don't know how far they are through all that yet though. The UI definitely needs more work I think, but I reckon they may have streamlined it a little for the beta possibly.
  • I'm pretty hyped about the music creation tools also -

  • Two creations by a two devs, working individually -

Some amazing stuff, the pool level there was shown on the last stream, some of the techniques used to create the details in the room are really cool. Goes to show that once people really get up to speed with using the tools as good as the devs can now that we'll see some incredibly polished games come out of this. That pug platfomer is supposed to handle really rather well, I was watching a Giant Bomb stream where they were playing through various user created levels, when they got to that the reaction was that it felt properly good, like what you would expect for a platformer game you would spend money for.

Early on the dev cycle I was worried that the quality of the gameplay might be limited, but it really looks like it's just a matter of time and experience to make something really solid.

And the beta has now indeed ended. By pretty much all accounts it seems to have been a resounding success, with a minimal amount of technical problems, and gave the testers a pretty full featured set of the creation tools. Some incredible stuff has been made over the last month and a bit, as can be seen on this page, and really bodes well for the time after the full release.

Apparently there are no more betas planned, MM will be focussing entirely on getting the game finished, presumably most of that is going to be the story mode(s), and many many additional tutorials. Will be fascinating to see how the VR stuff stacks up, don't know if I will getting in on that one day, but I hope it turns out amazing.

Release date is a total unknown, but top reckon is that it should be in the next 3-4 months.
  • Be a great time to release it

I will spend hours and hours on it but not actually achieve anything of note.

    I'll still love it though.
