Horizon: Zero Dawn
  • Maybe. I'm sure there was something else, some sort of counter attack.
  • I'm playing now and I can't remember any counterattack - you can stun some enemies mid-attack with the right hit, and there's also your spear attack - r1, r2 when not aiming - which is useful just after a roll. Other than that, it's possible I missed something.
  • It's maybe just the roll. I was sure there was something in a specific tutorial; do this when they jump at you. I seem to remember having real difficulty with the timing. I'm maybe conflating memories of all the games.
  • I have just started.

Child Aloy has a large head.
  • Played for a couple of hours and like what I've seen so far. Combat is fun with the nimble character and ease of switching between low and spear.

Is there a lock-on though? I couldn't find one and it's the only thing that's making things awkward so far.

No lock on - I actually don't mind the omission in this one, combat is responsive enough and aiming at body parts is required. I've only missed it on a couple of small occasions.
  • This is less of a toe to toe and more strategic that most games I've played of a similar nature. It becomes possible to completely cripple a herd without going near them.
Remember to scan everything you see, as it will tell you which damage is most effective.
Make sure you hunt tons of the natural wildlife, as they allow you to upgrade your gear.
You won't need the lock on in most battles to be honest. stealth is a viable option and you don't have to stick to the path either.
I really really like this game.

If you whistle when in cover does it still only pull one machine to you? Because that shit is broken as fuck.

I am hoping that the DLC reveals more of Alloy's camel toe. Okthanksbye.

It depends how close things are. I only used to whistle if one was close enough. so I don't know.

DS is right - whistle + stealth attack is OP as fuck.

At 14 hours in atm and think it's great. Haven't done a lot of the main quest line yet as mostly just enjoying traversing the landscape and trying out different weapons on the machine beasts. Combat is really enjoyable and it does a good job of creating the impression of a hunter out in the wild.

It certainly follows the typical modern open world template, with a ton of icons on a map, but because it's actually a fun place to be in it doesn't feel like following a checklist. I can quite easily get sidetracked on my way somewhere and spend 15 minutes picking off a herd, or getting into it with one of the more powerful enemies, just because. The 'tutorial' bonuses for each new weapon encourage experimentation too.

Only drawbacks at this stage are ropey dialogue (not that there's too much of it) and some less than impressive AI. Machines have pathfinding problems (so does Aloy sometimes) and are too easy to outrun.

Having a good time with this so far. Game completion says about 17%, but wondering if someone can give me a good sense of where I am in the game - I've done quite a few story missions leading up to a revenge mission where I have to
    Spoiler:
    . Just passed that.
  • Long way to go yet Reg.
It wasn't until I hit my thirties that I realised you could unlock rewards by exploring the map
  • I liked this for the first ten minutes.

Zelda destroyed it for me when I realised I couldn't even climb a five foot rock.
  • I love this game more than what I've played of zelda.

  • I've never played Zelda but have always been secretly jealous of those who did whilst I busied myself playing Horizon Zero Dawn.

  • Occurred to me I didn't have to only do nice view photos. Why not some action shots as well? This is a quick one I did just before going out - will try some better compositions next time.

Did the 2nd cauldron today. Love the fights at the end of those (except the uneven ground which Aloy tends to get stuck on). Got trashed the first time, so spent a while setting traps before triggering the fight again. Worked a charm.
  • Also started to use the slow-mo when sliding to fire arrows. Stylish as.
  • It's amazing how well you can plan a complete ambush in this game, allowing you to level the playing field.

  • Just hit one of the main locations and I'm at 30% completion, but I've already spent 20 hours getting there.

Some holiday snaps from the morning:
    Spoiler:
  • Hope it's OK just posting more and more pics in here. Photo mode is very addictive.

I was expecting this to be getting repetitive by now, but it keeps mixing it up with new new stuff.

Another highlight: started a side quest where I have to go and investigate a quarry. Walked down there and started looking around and suddenly
    Spoiler:
  • Ah yes that's a particularly nasty encounter, (un)fortunately you can snipe them at a distance in all future encounters because of their redundant AI. That's one of the things that I hope they fix with the future DLC, but I think we're stuck with dumb robo-dinosaurs for good.

Yep. AI is really the one weak point in this. Not just the machines either - the human enemies are dumb as fuck too.

Then again, it might be really hard otherwise.
  • I'm really enjoying all these photos Jon.

    thumbs up!

  • It's not just me then.

A few more action shots would be nice, I think. Tend to forget when actually fighting things.
  • 'Boss' battles in this continue to be great. Well, set pieces where you have to battle the bigger machines and can't just run away. This is the end of the hunter's lodge quest. Had fought a couple of these guys before, but from a safe distance, pinging them with arrows. First time fighting one up close.
