Thank you guys for advice. Has anyone been to Pizzarium which apparently seems to be world changing
  • Romes a bit of a shit hole.  All the buildings are really old and a bit crumbly so I don't know why you're bothering tbh.  All the paintings everywhere are really faded and a bit old fashioned plus you can't find a good fry up anywhere.  I'd go to Dubai instead that's like brand new and they give loads of jobs to poor people to keep building more new stuff.

I understand the sentiment, but Rome is remarkably dirty and extremely chaotic for a capital city in a first world country.

While I know you're being flippant, Paris is a more worthy comparison.

Edit - Paris also has a large number of incredibly popular attractions that are of great historic and artistic value... But the place is no where near as scruffy.

It's sad really, because the landmarks of Rome deserve much more respect from their modern custodians.

Totally agree tbh. It’s an odd place. Florence is my go to city in Italy.

I've been reading a bit of this lately. Holidaying vicariously.
  • One thing I disliked about Italy is that it's almost impossible (it seems) to get a savoury breakfast.

Yeh but you also have an excuse to eat your own bodyweight in cannoli instead.
  • Rome recs from months back. Still stands.

Super T aside, does anyone have a quick list of things to do/see in and around Rome over 5 days?

Best ice cream I had in Rome this summer (and believe me I had a lot) was at Gelateria Ianotti. Best pizza was L’Isolla della Pizza. What more could you need?

    Mexico was awesome.

    MdPF9mgl.jpg

Somewhat fortunately avoided getting both shot, and caught in a natural disaster.

That said, all the police are strapped. Even the traffic wardens (no pics).
And I got as close to an active volcano as I've ever done in my life...

    Ud3PADVl.jpg

We went to Mexico City (meh... But the market in the pic was amazing)...

    WHv7Z3Rl.jpg

    Puebla (where the Volcano was)...

    FXD5lpBl.jpg

    and Oaxaca (amazing place)...

    pkGesKJl.jpg

Food was mostly good, but we were moving around too much during the day to savour that part of the experience, though we had a few moments...

Tlayuda's good... Like a Mexican pizza...

    xMH9IYql.jpg

And Mole Poblano (effectively, savoury chocolate sauce)...

    2MVsQwLl.jpg

Other highlights included the street art... Which is generally amazing...

    ldubkgyl.jpg

Also less positively, and much like Romania, the terrifyingly high number of remarkably gentle and well behaved street dogs...

    UrpWEALl.jpg

    ZZLQWfRl.jpg

Their human counterparts were also very high in number (no pics).
A one line summary for anyone with the requisite experience?

    Like a massive Caribbean island.

For everyone else, it's extremely hot, there are no trains, everything's falling apart, food is cheap, the views are beautiful, everyone's nuts, and there's a great deal of low level chaos, but, somehow, everything still runs like clockwork...

Well worth visiting. I'd especially recommend Oaxaca... Very different, and as safe as fuck.

Man Dyno those are awesome pics. One of my favourite places in the world is Mexico, and once you get out of the Tijuana / Mexico City / Cancun shit it's a wonderful country. I think you've captured that there. Hope you had a great time and I'm well jealous.

Lol. Yeah. It was great out there. Another month would have been very welcome, but what can you do?

Can't be sure about what it's like to live out there either, but we wouldn't mind visiting again.

If I had Brooks-esque time-money resource though, I'd look at learning some Spanish, buy a bulk supply of bug spray, and soak it in for a good three months...

If only for the surprisingly strong arcade scene...

Imagine Goodge Street Casino before it closed to make way for a gym... establishments around that size, but actually packed... Even on a Monday...

Sure it's mostly a function of economics, but to me, it looked like a great place to be. :]

  • Spent most of the week in Turkey. Few days doing a city break in Ankara, followed by a couple more in a small old village high up in the hills on the North East coast. Good sights, food and company, and a great contrast between the two parts.

Should probably stick some photos up at some point.

  • Flying to Tenerife on Wednesday...

...with 18 month year old cub...

...I'm really excited and terribly terrified. Flight is going to be a terror.
  • Going Saudi Arabia tomorrow with the family for some terrorist training. Will be back Friday 13th!

Everyone knows you go to Saudi Arabia for drugs and duty free, so there's no point in covering up.

  • Doing the same trip (with San Fran in-between) in a couple of months so will be looking at your recommendations closely.

You better be living solely off Joe's Pizza while you're in New York. Otherwise I'll be mildly miffed.

Just booked up flights to go visits the mrs extended family in bohol Philippines it’s going to be some jaunt we’re staying with them in loon never made a venture like this I’m filled with apprehension and excitement as I’ve never met them or been out this neck of the woods

Kinda happy and looking forward to it/ kinda para cause I think it’s going to be out in the sticks

Anyone been somewhere similar? Fill me with confidence and tips

You'll be right Chaz. The flight will be long and tiring (there's only so many movies you can watch in a row) but the feeling of stepping out of a plane to somewhere totally foreign is always worth the trip. Plus you've got the missus and her fam to act as guides while you're there so there shouldn't be too much stress on that front, just go along for the ride and listen to their tips for things to see and do.

As for meeting the fam, you're a charming, beautiful man so they're gonna love you mate.

If you need some backup, send me a message and I'll pop over. Ain't too far from Aus.

I have spent the morning wandering around Bushwick looking at street art and am now sitting in a ridiculously hipster cafe drinking a flat white.

I can feel my beard growing and tattoos starting to appear on my arms.
