  • Would anyone be up for a bit of networking? I would be more likely to recommend some of your fine chaps skills to someone else if I knew what you guys did.
I trust most of your judgement, and I would be happy to help anyone out that is looking to promote what they do to my list on linkedin etc.
    unless Peter disagrees.

I work for a software engineering producing a  Marketplace management tool.

I also paint and design murals and personalise work environments for Nursing Homes, Respite homes, Long term care places and similar charities.

Recently been cartooning again, taking people and making them into videogame characters.

    And what do you do?

As of yesterday I'm self employed. Small website design company doing CMS and E-Commerce sites for small businesses, individuals, small charities, academic research etc.

I've done a couple of sites for friends and family as frisbees but I'm currently developing three sites for paying customers and have a couple other leads. No-one has actually paid me for anything yet though.

It's been quite hard wearing two hats and having essentially two jobs, but as of this week it's full force on the new business. Wish me luck.

  • Mod you're a brave man, nice one. Good luck, I hope it all goes really well for you. Out of curiosity (nosiness) have you set yourself up as a limited company?

No, not yet. Sole Trader/self employed for now just because it's easier.

    And cheers G.
  • I inhertited some cash after I finished college. I have enough to stay afloat for a while yet and have some money locked in property, so I took a basics course on music production and have been teaching myself since. I've only given one track to a fairly well known professional DJ and label owner who told me that it sounded like a track by one of my heroes and would be perfect for another one of my heroes' labels and clubnights in Germany and Ibiza. Since then I've got another 10 tracks of a similar standard. I'm kind of prospecting.

  • I do spreadsheets.  At least that's basically all I've done this week.
  • @XTC/Lawro Hype mix: Nice work, that has to be the ultimate reward there - validation by your hero. I'd love to look into that kind of thing but I could add that to the list of the thousands of thing I want to do, might hobby it up later in life.

Also kudos to Mod et al.
  • Best of luck Mod!

I'm a military fast jet pilot, so my specific technical skill set isn't terribly transferable.  However, a recent chat with someone who handles resettlement into the civilian world for ex-military people has made me realise that transferring slightly abstract qualities into a CV makes you sound pretty impressive.

The unmanned world is getting ridiculously big and interesting, so I'm quite tempted by opportunities there, but as far as networking goes if you need someone to fly things I'm probably your best bet on this forum.

Quite often, that's what I do too.

There's a flight sim built into Excel, best of both worlds.
  • I'm a graphics programmer for a videogame devco.
I spend a lot of my time swearing at a PS3 devkit.
If you need a vertex/pixel shader I can probably help.
  • I do 3D modeling/Animation and Compositing/2D animation. I tend to boil that down to Multimedia Designer.
I work for a company that aid evil global corporations in the selling of products, fixtures etc to supermarkets and other stores.
I spend about one day a fortnight being creative and the rest tending to the needs and general fuckwittery of sales people who think they are designers.
Those Apprentice tasks where they all gather around a designer to create a bottle label or a shop sign. Those shots pretty much summarise my life. Make something good then have it slowly whittled down into shit by a panel of idiots.
  • I point tv cameras at footballers mostly.

I don't do wedding videos fyi

What if a footballer got married, or someone got married at a football ground?

I'd have liked my wedding filmed on one of those XMos.

Of this I have no doubt.  I had to do a mIRC script for work this week.  I don't think it works so I've subcontracted Beano.
  • @Liveinadive
One day in a fortnight? That's pretty good by some standards! I worked in post-production for about a year and a half and it nearly broke my heart... There were some golden moments though – working with professional CDs and directors who KNOW what they want brought the best out of me.

That would make for a very long wedding video.

is that still in there? I thought it was only in excel 95 or something?
He could've just said they came from another planet but seems keen to convince people with his bullshit pseudoscience that he knows stuff. I wouldn't trust him with my lunch. - SG
  • Some of you are quite specialised. How did you find the slots that you fit, so to speak?

I've never known what I want to do (professionally, anyway), so I set out with two aims:

    1) Earn as much as I can (if I'm going to waste large chunks of my life doing things I don't really want to do I'd better sell my time well).

    2) Be as much of a generalist as possible, so as to keep my options open and try lots of things, and hopefully stumble across something that inspires me.

After a few experiments, this has resulted in my becoming a consulting product manager. Everything is a product, so product managers can work in lots of different environments / industries and apply many of the same skills / experience. Most importantly, for me anyway, in many companies the product manager is given responsibility for their product portfolio (profit & loss) which gives me a sense of ownership and contribution - a bigger cog, I suppose.

If anyone's struggling to figure out what they want to be, I can sincerely recommend it.

Yeah I have no idea what that is.  I did find a total of £6,000 in two of mine yesterday though.  That was a bonus.
  • I want a bonus.

I'm a project manager.  I manage projects, apparently.  There are a lot of spreadsheets involved fyi.  The Leeds visits aren't work-related.
  • I went to Leeds once, it was pretty cold.
