Well to be fair, China saying they will do better at climate change is like the pikey down the road saying he will stop burning tyres one day a week.

China spends more on renewables than the entire US and EU budgets combined.

Power in China is sitting at just under 25% renewable!

China is no. 1 in the world for wind power generation.

China is no.1 in the world for photovolactic.

China is no.1 in the world for hydro. Or, at least, it was - can't find the newest numbers.

China produces more power from renewables than France and Germany's renewable and non-renewable power output combined.

China is building 50 (!) nuclear power stations to try to reduce reliance on coal in the short term.

China is still growing at a rate of 6.7% this year and is trying to manage expansion and building on a scale never before seen in the course of history, which needs power NOW! But they're making sure to do more than any single country on earth to do their bit on climate change.

They're committed - far more than we are.

This is one of the pros of not having to seek re-election every 4 or 5 years. You can implement long term strategy that might not bear fruit for 10 or 15 years.

It shouldn't be if the voting population i.e. everyone is involved and educated to be involved from very young. I realise it's a contradiction but i'm starting to feel like participation should be mandatory so the system actually works.

Trump repeatedly undermining the media is rancid business.

If enough idiots hook on his bullshit (and they did already) and he convinces enough he is the truth (because they are fucking idiots) it's easy to foresee some really really dark shit happening.

    Here's another possible outcome:

    Australia has compulsory voting.

We haven't fucked up quite as bad as you lot, or the seppos, but we haven't soared to any heights either.

Medicority and abusing human rights out of sight/mind is our current setup.

Second day in a row that a Trump tit has said that the relationship with the media will change.  Seems the new President just wants to cut them out.

I liked this comment in the guardian:
Updated statement from White House Communications Office

Mr Spicer said: "Real Americans will not be surprised to learn that the biased media used misleading photographic evidence. In fact, hundreds of thousands of the President's supporters were standing on those white sheets but the cameras did not pick them up because they were themselves wearing white sheets."

His whole demeanour during the conference was like a butthurt defender of the brony movement.

Hopefully the press will go full out attack on them until they realise they have to play ball at least a bit. In reality I can see the press falling in line in order to get access to stories.
  • What stories can Trump give them that are better than the ones he spontaneously generates? Nothing less than unquestioning, positive coverage will do for Trump. The newspapers aren't going to give him that, not least because it doesn't sell newspapers. The leader of the free world going mental over crowd sizes is way better. But the big prize for them is to dig up the story that gets him out of there.

The danger is that any political dealing he actually manages to do will be obscured by all this noise. Which is probably part of his plan - have so much shite going on everywhere that it's difficult to pick out what's really going on.

The press in Moscow seem pretty sycophantic. Granted journalists critical of Putin in Russia have a tenancy to die, but look at the amount of abuse Trump was able to generate toward that female journalist that was doing the moderating for the debates. Eventually that type of pressure might pay of for him.

Hopefully there is too much of a tradition for free press and free speech in America for it to work, and hopefully journalist will have too much integrity to lower themselves to those levels, but look at Fox. They are already there. The responsible, professional journalists and media outlets need to work together rather than compete with each other or it will be a race to the bottom.
  • Trumps problem in restricting access is that he prefers Twitter, a platform on which he can't restrict access.
  • But he also controls whatever message he states. He thinks unadultaratrd trump will see him through. In fairness could you disagree with him?
  • I was thinking the other day that I could imagine Trump putting forward the idea of state run news.
He would use the BBC as an example (ignoring the fact it isn't state run, but who needs facts right?).

At first it is just a state news channel, "Bringing you the facts without the spin". Probably start quite dull without all the flashy graphics and ott headlines. Over time it transforms to have all the chintz, it turns into Fox's biggest rival and it is hard to tell the two apart.

15-20 years down the line, America's main news source is state run.

That would be easy to get through a republican led Senate.

I don't think it's ever intentional with Trump though. Maybe Bannon and those types know what they're doing with him but he doesn't seem to know himself.
Mr. Trump grew increasingly angry on Inauguration Day after reading a series of Twitter messages pointing out that the size of his inaugural crowd did not rival that of Mr. Obama’s in 2009. But he spent his Friday night in a whirlwind of celebration and affirmation. When he awoke on Saturday morning, after his first night in the Executive Mansion, the glow was gone, several people close to him said, and the new president was filled anew with a sense of injury.
    https://mobile.nytimes.com/2017/01/22/us/politics/donald-trump-aides-rocky-first-weekend.html

Trump really is the people's president though. Using social media to try and get validation and achieve importance, obsessing with the trivia of modern life, shouting and screaming his way into relevancy. If people were going mental over macroeconomic policy on social media, he would be too. But instead he's as vacuous as everyone else in that sphere.
  • I'm figuring he'll have a breakdown within 3 years - probably both mental and physical.
  • Imagine what it's going to be like when it's something serious. Deny everything tactic will probably get you alarmingly far.

    Double plus ungood, probably.
