Not that it takes much to make Trump look like a dangerous moron.
  • Probably due to Chinese/Russian intervention.

  • This shutdown is hilarious (ignoring the shiteness) dems playing reps at their own game.
  • Don't the GOP control congress and senate (and presidency)? So... how did they manage to shut themselves down?

Because budgets are usually passed using the budget reconciliation route which can be used once per year and allows legislation to be passed with a simple majority. This year, Republicans decided to use their one reconciliation vote to hand massive tax cuts to the rich, leaving them open to filibustering.
  • Also - when the last shutdown happened in 2013, Obama/Dems passed a bill to ensure the military folks still got paid.

Guess what Trump/Reps didn't do this time?
I'm falling apart to songs about hips and hearts...
  • So I mean the US is closed and we just announced our military can't really do shit anymore if Russia really wanted a go.

So...probably time to learn me some Russian I guess.

    Das vidanya, comrades.

Russia's ground forces aren't actually that fierce comparatively with NATO. Poland in particular due to legit concerns/a dash of paranoia is militarized quite hard against them. Poland had the gloves on in seconds and arm reared back when Crimea happened.

The real cause for concern is they seem to be experimenting with advanced combined arms tactics involving drones and current technology no one is really putting enough money into. That story on the wind of an entire battalion of Ukrainians being eliminated in minutes using a fleet of drones as spotters is one example. The arty ground crews themselves can do their own spotting. No need for liaison with air support or any forward positions. The very first fucking barrage will be bang on. Typically artillery throughout the ages gives you at least a few wayward shots as warning.
  • Well we have about 200k total armed forces personnel and they have 2mil so I mean, they probably don't need much tech if push comes to shove.

When talking war with Russia it's always from the mindset of NATO vs them, not solely us vs them when taking into account numbers and hardware. Russia is still the world's largest country in terms of land even if they've had a decreasing population not unlike Japan for the last few decades.

A huge proportion of their war strength also comes from conscripts. And hey, Russia's army is famous for gang raping its own young men so everyone loves being in it.
  • The guardian had a decent article with insights from Russian bods that said they aren't at all scared of our aircraft, tanks or nukes but are envious of the UKs ability to get small amounts of highly trained troops into combat zones incredibly quickly.

Because it gives us the capability to quickly harm/occupy their northern coast and critically, all the fucking northern oil fields.
  • Trump thinks NATO is a waste of money tho.

I'm just saying, NATO is a deterrent fo sho, but NATO is not going to prevent a country taking a skullfucking though before it turns up.

I think Russians are more interested in Ukraine anyway for the time being, I mean inbetween all the gang raping.

This is assuming we work in combination with eastern European countries on a united front.

Thank God all that restructuring to fight brown people in hot countries for their oil wasn't totally in vain!

Oh yeah. It's obvious P.U.T.I.N. is all about breaking up any sense of Euro cooperation. Some people think Crimea was a modern day Rhineland.
  • Also the small numbers of highly trained people probably basically = our entire ground forces at this point lmao.

I should point out, I'm a pacifist, but as a filthy socialist just think of all the jobs we could provide if we maintained a bigger armed forces and shit, just in case anyone needs a slap, like.

  • Russia doesn't really need to invade the UK now do they?
With Brexit secured the UK (or at the very least the people who instigated Leave (hello Nigel!)) are now a natural ally to the Russians. A bit like how US-Russia relations are atm. That was the whole intention of their cyber propaganda/hacking campaign afterall.

War's more likely to erupt in places like the middle east (Iran/Syria/Palestina) and N-Korea. Thankfully tensions between the Koreans have subdued for the moment.

I can’t see Russia up and invading the UK, I could see them pushing their western border given an opportunity.
  • I don't think it's likely either but I think it puts things starkly in perspective when you say that if you consider our ground troops, our entire full time, fully trained number of people is less than the capacity of Wembley stadium, as one caller on LBC excellently expressed it.

You just wait until they get knocked out of the ice hockey because the South Korean failed to pass to the North Korean who was in loads of space, and instead took the shot and skied it into the crowd. There'll be war before the third period is even finished.

Germany didn't invade the UK in the first or second world wars but they still nearly wiped out our entire army twice.
