  • There's a great gourmet coffee place just opened by my work- they do amazing espresso in the shop but they sell beans too. I just bought a bag of Ethiopian single estate stuff that, I shit you not, tastes really strongly of blueberries. Dunno what sorcery they evoked to get it that way but,  by Odin, it's astoundingly good. Probably the best coffee I've ever bought.

gear wise I'm limited by budget and space at home so I'm just using a french press but my brother is a massive coffee snob and he's taught me how to get a decent brew without fancy machines.

I use one of those on the hob jobbies, have done for years. I too cannot funtion without a coffee in the morning. I'm like a zombie until I get it. I use the same Illy stuff as g, love it.

Edit: Well I say the same, it isn't specifically for machines. I assume it's the same stuff ish.
  • theres too much to learn about everything gah, i regretted telling one of my friends that i liked rum recently, the hole goes deep
  • +1 Pea. I have a tiny stove pot that makes one espresso.

It's kind of sad, but I actually look forward to the whole process of filling the 'sieve' bit, levelling off the coffee, waiting for it to seep through etc.

I guess it's akin to a junkie preparing his needle.....

    Coffee
I used to use one of those on the hob jobbys, a Bialetti 3 cup. I cut the coffee out for a few years and when I came back to it the inside of it had corroded and the coffee tasted foul. I do the french press and I keep one 2 cup in uni and a 4 cup one at home. I rock the same illy dark roast as others at home and the percol columbian at uni as I am less arsed about people helping themselves to it. I have some percol columbian instant at home also which i like to mix with alcoholic (35%) vanilla flavouring and some single cream on early sunday evenings.

    Tea
Besides the black tea I am quite partial to green, chai, peppermint and roobios. None of that powered chai shit you get in cafes though. That's just foul. I occasionally splash out on others teas, as I am trying to find the ultimate tea for me. These folks provide a quite a selection and it gets changes quite a bit. Might go for the chocolate peppermint before it disappears.

edit: vanilla stuff i use- also good in hot chocolate. (Get the missus pissed on teh sly)

  • I love coffee so much, it's as necessary as sleep for me (just like in Lone Survivor).

I think I can say I used to be a barista? I worked in an independant coffee house in Norwich for 8 months many years ago, with a £3,000+ machine knocking out lattes and cappucinos. I took a lot of pride in making them. Making a mocha in a small latte glass was the best - the concentric circles of coffee on the outside, then milk, then the hot chocolate made it look beautiful. I couldn't do it as well as my firend Joe who I think, 6 years on, still works there.

Now I'm a stovetop guy, I love my 6 cup maker. I get my beans at a little place in Soho called the Algerian Coffee Exchange. This picture doesn't do justice to how dark and oily these brazillian beans are, which I got by asking for 'very strong'.

My parents employ a totalitarian Tea only empire in our household and one of these 6 Cup things 2/4 cup makers look brilliant.

  • I have a machine which helps make the perfect cup of tea OR coffee, depending on how the mood takes you.  It's called a kettle and cost me about £5.

PSA: It's OK to own a coffee machine, as long as you don't pronounce the names of the coffees (and only the names of the coffees) in an Italian accent.

  • I'm back on my Bialetti moka pot after my Delonghi espresso machine's pump died.

I'd love a Gaggia like g's but can't afford one just now. Illy all the way.
  • That's the good thing about machines like the Gaggia's. Easy to get replacement parts. To many of the more common everyday brands, when the pump goes you're stuffed.

They sell non-Nestle capsules for the Nespresso machines in the supermarkets here. Nestle's policy that you can only buy authentic capsules in their own specialist shops can bite my sack.
  • Think that's now their entry level machine. I had the much older model it replaced for a good ten years before I upgraded to the one I have now.

    good price
