Olympics Rio 2016: Pass the наркотик

1 week to go until what could be an interesting games from both a sporting and political standpoint.
Reports of financial issues and possible corruption in the Brazilian Olympic Committee(1), combined with Russian doping scandal(2) will hopefully not overshadow what should be another great spectacle.
Can team GB repeat their impressive tally from 2012? Will any more countries be caught up in doping scandals (China, Jamaica)? Will the beach volleyball be broadcast in 4k for extra perv points?

Maybe the jp one gonna be in 8k? I heard nhk were saying 8k is basically the Rez endpoint so bothering with 4K is a waste of time.

Beach volleyball though, surely an exception has to be made?
On such matters though, will the next world cup be the next big TV step-up? Isn't the world cup historically the event for shifting TV sets?

In this country BT only adopted it in a very limited capacity to get one over on Sky. Having had their hand forced, Sky are retaliating by launching SkyUltraHD in August and claiming that virtually all of their Prem matches this season will be broadcast in 4K.
What's interesting is that Sky's OB facilities are provided by a company called Visions.
Last November, five of their OB Units that Sky use were destroyed in a fire. They've all been replaced with new 4K trucks. Handy thing insurance.Come with g if you want to live... -

It hasn't been decided yet afaik, but increasingly, big events like the final will be shot in 4K and just downscaled to HD for us plebs. The problem is that while the lens and camera technology has caught up with the standards we're used to working with, there just isn't enough of it being bought by anyone to facilitate an entire tournament of that size. I would've been going but for parental duties and my sister's wedding. My mate who sorted all my tickets at 2012 is off, he's going to pretty much everything again. Will be interested to hear how he gets on, he's sorted accommodation via air bnb so he's probably virtually dead already.iosGameCentre:T3hDaddy;

This is also quite interesting. Four of the stadiums Brazil built for the world cup costing billions, all lying empty now. I worked at all four of them, and I don't think any of them were ever actually completed. They looked great on tv, but best not to look behind the curtains.

A friend of mine is over there doing broadcast engineering stuff. Just arrived last week, along with most of the TV sports workers. Their apartment building for the summer isn’t finished, but they’ve been moved in anyway. Middle of Rio and their flats have no doors. Good start. -

Good luck to him! Worth bearing in mind that the main Olympic park is nowhere near Rio. In fact it's a good 30-40km away from the main body of the city to the west in Barra. Bizarrely, the Maracana isn't even the main Olympic stadium. It's just being used for the opening and closing ceremonies, and the finals of the football.
Main stadium is the Estádio Olímpico João Havelange. I haven't been to that one, but it's about 8km further inland from the Maracana. This is probably not a good thing.
We stayed in Botafogo, which was good. Easy to get everywhere on the underground from there and good local amenities. Copacobana is a nice beach obviously, but there isn't much else there other than the beach and a million hotels. The beach is also a hot spot for entire gangs of robbers, so you keep your shit in your bag at all times.
As far as safety goes, it's pretty much common sense. Lots of our crews were robbed (some at knifepoint) all over Brazil, but it was mainly either daft youngsters or older people wandering into areas that were clearly not places to be. If you're a big grumpy looking bastard like me, then thieves tend to look for easier pickings. Saftey in numbers and stick to well populated areas really.
Tell your mate to start brushing up on his Brazillian language skills. Nobody speaks English, and even Portuguese is of limited use as there are so many dialects in Brazil.

I'd be more concerned that it looks like 16 feeds split on an individual screen, so if you lose a screen, you lose 16 feeds rather than one...Come with g if you want to live...
