Halo, is it me you're looking for?

Knight, are you going to get to the bit where you tell me why? The reason I asked is because I don't know, yes =^..^=

  • Also, Melee is the only weapon you have at all times.

Looked up MLG stats. Knight has 76% of his kills with the DMR in that. Which is the starting weapon. Melee is second, but accounts for only 8% of the kills.

Yeah sorry didn't have any time earlier. Don't now either. Check back tomorrow, hopefully will have by then.

*Puts elitest hat on* Not this again 'mod. I see you're abusing statistics again too. Melee may be my 3rd highest weapon of choice but what % of my kills comes from melee compared to weapons or grenades? Also, I play MLG the vast majority of the time and those settings hardly have any weapons available to pick up. Your problem with Halo isn't the game balance, it's that you don't know what you're doing. Go away and learn how to play, come back, and then we can have a discussion about kill times. Don't mean to be elitest and all that jazz but if you're going to make statements about Halo's game design you have to actually understand Halo's game design, and you clearly don't at the moment Nick, you may be interested in competitive game design but you obviously don't understand competitive Halodesign if you want slower kill times.

I know how to play an FPS, thanks. What I'm not willing to do is play one gametype over and over simply so I can specialise in one weapon.

The FPS I'd like to play isn't the one where I have to choose a playlist that starts you with and uses almost exclusively the one weapon that works.

Nor do I think that equals good balance.
  • Mod, we did have this conversation before. Ironically, since we did, Reach came out and on default settings kinda fucked up what people were suggesting was great about halo. In H3, doing things inefficiently lead to you finding kill times slow. To be blunt, you could have done things better, and you would have found it faster. In (standard) reach, that balance got shifted and so the kill times are really quite slow and it really is quite hard, even doing things "right" to get a quick kill.

However, with the settings as they are in the majority of lists these days, we're pretty much back to ur doin it rong. tu and anniversary settings, you just need to learn to team shoot, throw grenades, use weapons that take off shields quick, etc.

I'm still great and you still love it.

Mod, stop talking. Seriously. You've basically come into the football thread and started complaining about not being able to pick up the ball.
    Mod74 wrote:
I've long thought the kill times in Halo were ridiculous. You should be able to punish someone instantly if you get the drop on them not watch them bunny hop into safety.

You can punish them if you get the drop on them. Smack 'em, drop their shields, and head shot them. Boom, dead in under a second. Or, they're not paying attention, drop a grenade under their feet, get a couple of shots in, again dead in under a second. Fuck, if you've really caught them off guard, punch 'em in the back. Dead instantly.

If you're just shooting someone, they might be able to get away. That's when you tell your team mates where they are and how many shots they've taken. Personally, I like this. It means Halo is about who's most accurate, which teams works best together to get kills. It means that if I'm getting shot I have a chance to turn the tables, duck around a corner and get a cheeky grenade off or something.

Halo's kill times are longer than in CoD because Halo is about guns, grenades, and melee. You have to be the best at combining these to win. CoD has short kill times because you shoot each other, and CoD likes to pretend that it's realistic.

And I'm not even going to touch the "head shots have ruined FPSs" comment with a ten foot barge pole.

No, I'm not doing it wrong, I'm just not lobbing grenades to assist my bullets nor playing one weapon over and over to pull off headshots like some slightly more mobile sniper.

I want to see someone and shoot them. With my gun.

I appreciate Bungie will never see it that way but maybe 343 will. Maybe they won't and I'll continue not playing Halo multiplayer.

So does playing one gametype exclusively because it gives you the one gun that works, and not being able to use any of the other weapons in the game because they're shit, but hey ho.

    You are talking bollocks, Mod.
  • Well, since it's more like half a dozen playlists with multiple gametypes, and since (with some practice and by using them in the right context) most of the guns are pretty functional, tbh. It was certainly true in H3, and as I said, in Reach, post title update, it's still pretty much true.

Yeah, I'm not being very constructive, apologies.

Specifically, you're talking bollocks about 'the only gun that works'. I would happily go one on one with you with you starting with whichever starting weapon it is that you think is this magical super gun, I'll pick one of the other starting weapons and our starting distance and I'll kill you nine times out of ten.

That'll be why you're rocking 31% kills with the DMR then pistol then melee (assault 5%)

  • Jesus mod, if you check stray andriods stats, he'll be rokcing massive kills with the sniper. Oh noes. maybe the sniper is teh best. Or maybe he plays the sniper list?

Or maybe our stats will be skewed by anniversary settings being all pistol.

Either way, what that won't show is kills assisted by grenade damage, or plasma damage to take down shields, all of which could have finished with a melee or a headshot.

I played a lot of BTB too (Big team Battle) which was all DMR starts because of the size of the maps.

I don't even know what we're arguing about anymore. There's only 2-3 mid ranged weapons in the game. So yeah, there'll be a lot of kills with those weapons. It's not a military sim, it doesn't need 8 variants of sub machine guns etc etc (not that there's anything wrong with that per se. BFBC2 FTW and all). It also doesn't change the fact that we'll all also have plenty of kills with snipers shotties and rockets. All of which are vital and powerful, but not on every map.
I'm still great and you still love it.
  • Guys, GUYS!!

Come on now, you're just wasting your time.

There are more important issues to be discussed, like how thick Tiger's thighs are.

    Also Mod, you'll always be at a disadvantage because Knight can Deadlift 470kgs (and I don't mean a 1rm, I mean 3 sets, 12reps).

So Mod, I suggest you listen to Senator G.Man; stop being polite and just let the hate flow through you.

DMRs come in the same loadout as sprint, which is my preferred armour ability. I also happen to like the gun, hence this is my usual loadout and so this is the weapon that I tend to make most of my kills with. This doesn't by any stretch of the imagination make it the only functional weapon in the game.

Mod, you're digging a hole. Stop talking arse and dig up, stupid.
    From your Taiwan correspondent.
  • Mod quite a lot of the time, you start with either the DMR, or the pistol. You always have the melee. And you're wondering why everyone has lots of kills with it?

You're also much more likely to take down someones shields with the AR and then kill them with a grenade than the DMR or a pistol, due to them being headshot weapons and the AR not. Seriously. Look up my weapons spread.

If you're not using grenades, you're playing Halo wrong.
  • Also, Mod, 34% of your kills are with the DMR, which suggests that you have it a lot, so I'm not sure where this map knowledge thing is coming from.
  • To be fair to Mod he is actually quite good at Halo. Knight, he doesn't have to play MLG standard to have an opinion on a game, his money is as good as ours. Mod, if you don't like the style or how to kill people in Halo, fair enough. Not sure why we all have to keep discussing it.

The thing i like about halo is a skilled player can kill any less skilled player no matter what weapons both of them have, every weapon in the game is potentially the best in a particular situation. It just so happens that BR/DMR/AR/Melee is easier than most in most situations, doesn't mean it's the only one to use if we were all good enough.
  • Given that I'm discussing this, I think we're in agreement that you don't have to play to MLG standard to have an opinion on the game. I also don't think anyone questioned his ability, more his tactics.
  • Given that I'm discussing this, I think we're in agreement that you don't have to play to MLG standard to have an opinion on the game. I also don't think anyone questioned his ability, more his tactics.

I edited to specifically mention Knight. Because, yeah.
  • Knight is good at MLG but he isn't good at Halo. Halo is rampaging around Standoff with 5 Spartans on a warthog. Halo is assaulting the enemy base from the back of a mongoose, raising your splazer to the sky and bellowing with frustration when Shyam inevitably drives off a cliff. That's Halo. Metagame.
  • What? Since when was Mod a passable Halo player? He’s shit, probably as bad as Shyam. No offense.
