Things aren't so bad after all...
  • Let's face it, 2016 has been one to forget. We all know the reasons why, let's not go into it here.

I thought "what we need is a thread of relentless positivity". So here it is: a place to post good stuff about people being cool/generous/nice to you personally (not just generic news stories of "this man saved a oil-encrusted bird", although that is cool). Something that pierced the darkness for you and helped you see that, y'know what, maybe folk are generally alright and things aren't so bad after all...

    My tuppence:

The last few years have been a bit rough for me and my wife. Without going into any details, she's had some serious health issues and a few major surgeries. While she is a lot better than she was, she's not a well girl at all. On top of that, the likelihood (according to doctors) is that these health problems have taken many, many years off her life.

For the most part I've coped okay with this. But a couple of years ago, after she'd had a major op, I was in a really bad place. Other problems were weighing in too and I just felt battered. I was running around looking after her, trying to hold a full-time job down and trying my best to care for the people in my congregation (I'm a minister, for those that don't know). The physical and emotional tank got empty and I ended up suffering severe depression.

Then one Saturday afternoon, there was a knock at the door. It was a friend of mine. A bit of background: he and his wife both suffer chronic, long-term health issues. Frankly, I'm amazed they can still function. I ask him if he's okay, and tell him to step in for a minute, thinking he needs a chat or some support in some way. He just smiles at me, gives me a hug and hands me a great big plastic crate. "I'll pick it all up tomorrow" he says and walks off before I can ask him what's going on.

When I open the crate, it turns out that he and his missus have cooked us a three-course meal - everything they knew we loved. I can't even begin to think about how difficult it was for them with the health issues they have.

There was also a card. It simply said: "We miss you guys. We're here for you. Everything will be fine." I cried for a day after that. But you know what? That act of kindness battered down a couple of years of darkness.

And he was right, everything was fine.

Yup! Honestly, at a point where I'd very nearly lost faith in, er... everything, this was the nudge that brought me back from the edge.

On a smaller scale (and I think I've already posted this), I once lost a wallet on a bus.
    Credit card, driver's license, everything...

    And a five pound note.

My mind was all over the place... Our lives are tied to our wallets. :[
2 days later, a little package turns up at my house...

Inside was my wallet, minus the fiver, but with everything else in tact, and a little note actually apologising for using the fiver to pay for postage.

From that day, I made some kind of vow to maintain that attitude towards others...

Not sure if I've been perfect in that, but I at least know that not every one is a cunt.

In fact, it's mostly TV and the media that has us thinking that everyone else is a cunt...

Though the Brexit and Trump decisions haven't really helped.

Sorry to hear about your wife Jim, I know it's been an issue for quite a while.
    Miracles happen sometimes though. :]

And thanks man. She's on a level at the moment, which is good. Day at a time.

  • A year or so ago I was at a cash machine and there was a chap in front of me, he withdrew a lot of money. I'd say a few hundred pounds. He was faffing about with his wallet and left the cash on top of the machine and walked off. I walked up to the machine and noticed all the cash, the lady directly behind me said "what an idiot, he left all that money behind. We should split it".

I ignored her picked up the cash walked down the street, I could see the guy in the distance. I managed to get his attention. I gave him back his money, he just said "thank you so much". And that was it. He looked really stressed (not about the money, but you could see it on his face).

Now I have never believed in Karma but about a month later, I was in Ralph Lauren in bicester village. They had combat trousers reduced frm £100 to £10 each. They were all on a circular rail and as you'd expect with a price like that a lot of stock was gone and odd sizes were left. I really wanted to find a pair of beige 34×34. I went through the entire rail twice, and nothing. Dispondent that I couldn't find a pair and against all logic i went back to the rail for one last fruitless look. Would you believe it, there was a 34x34 in beige. How did I miss that twice?!?

Afterwards it occurred to me maybe it was karma. I helped the chap at the cash machine and the pair of combats i really wanted i somehow found on my 3rd attempt.

"Lady" is a generous term there

When in hardship it can be tempting, but in reality it takes little effort to be decent person

Still good on you as there are many who wouldn't, and glad you got the strides you were after

Cheeky 'lady'. Why should you split it with her?
  • Many years ago, there was a wee alterations shop that opened up near my flat. It was run by an older Iraqi lady called Tag. She specialised in alterations to dresses, saris, and wedding dresses. Turned out her husband, and her father-in-law, were both tailors by trade and helped out in her shop despite not being eligible yet to officially work in the UK – so I got into the habit of taking my clothes there for alterations too. Suits, trousers, etc.

My ex-wife (wife at the time) ran a café next-door, so got friendly with Tag. Tag told her that she used to be a belly dancer and was going to start informal belly dancing classes for local girls, in the basement of her shop. So my wife started learning to belly dance.

A couple of weeks into this, my wife came home after a dance lesson with a huge glass casserole dish full of food. Apparently Tag had told her that it was improper for a woman to leave her husband at home unfed, so she had cooked a massive pot of fragrant, spicy, rice curry to be given to me. It was bloody delicious.

Not only was this talented seamstress running her own business in a brand-new country and providing for (at least) two generations of her own family, she was also running community classes for local women completely for free in her spare time, and now she was cooking dinner for the partners of all those local women too? Partners she had mostly never even met?

What a warm-hearted (and probably exhausted) person. I often wonder where she went next and what she’s doing now.
  • I'm waiting to get my hair did.
The barbers are playing some deep house music.
There is a guy in his late 50s tapping his feet away to it. Not some cool, record producer type guy, just a guy that, as a guess, is on his lunch break from driving a van.
  • It sometimes takes a disaster to get the best out of people because we're all so busy running around like headless chickens in this modern World. Whether it's 9/11 or similar, people do extraodinary things for others in bad situations and it's worth remembering this.

Fuck 24hr rolling news, fuck Facebook, fuck always plugged in. It used to be a noble thing, keeping abreast, but it's turned into something horrible and unhealthy.
  • @poprock Tag sounds awesome! Love stuff like that. What a star.

@SpaceGazelle Just five minutes - that's all it takes to make someone's day. More of us should do it.

  • Customers looking for particular songs for funerals, then their reactions to getting the song/album cos they've thought it'd be long unavailable, never fails to get me right in the feels. Their thank yous and kindness through such awful times always gives me a good kinda shake.

As an aside, one single customer being nice and friendly and chatty can obliterate the bad feelings from the previous 30 or so rude ones. I hope people keep that in mind, tomorrow especially.

    @Brooks I heartily agree.

Signed. Working late to prep sale on Xmas eve then knowing you have to be up early for the hell of sales on Boxing Day really ruins Christmas day itself.

Went to the pub tonight with a friend, kept getting whiffs of weed. Got chatting to two guys behind us, ended up buying a decent amount of weed off one of them. Had my first joint in at least a year by the canal with my mate. Spent the journey home listening to music and smiling like a loon.

I'm currently in the garden having one more before bed.

    I've missed this feeling.

Some old boy in the Midlands wanted the soundtrack from a musical that he used to go and see with his wife, but his local shops all said it was a no-go. He used to visit the same pub as my uncle, so the latter asked me if I could get it for him. I can't remember what it was, but I downloaded a copy, and for the last year or so of this guy's life he was so grateful whenever he saw my uncle.

It made me smile to think how happy he was for - in our circle - a five-minute effort.

Dreams actually come true. Jeebs, the tears are streaming as I re-read those posts.
