Not one for dubstep me but if this turns into more of a UK urban thread (urban? urban? 2 step?) I'm in.
I have a similar story to Liv in terms of first getting into grime walking the streets of London at night. I remember very well being at my ex's place on Aylesbury estate, Elephant & Castle, around 06/07 or so, a stabbing had taken place in the stairwell of her block, and she herself got mugged and punched there around that time. It was getting late and I had to head home, some dodgy alleys to navigate. Being a nice white boy from the North I figured I needed some oomph, d/l'd Boy in Da Corner to listen to on the walk, get me in the mindset for the journey. Never looked back after that (made it home safe too!).
Quickly shifted onto Wiley, that early eskibeat sound, still love that stuff. Glad that he's still doing the proper grime. There was a time a few years back when some artists were going more bling, expensive clothes, glitz etc. Glad that's been fucked off now (see Skeps 'that's not me' for a declaration over a classic eskibeat sound).
Around the same time as above I was living with a good mate who was well into his US hip hop and just wouldn't give grime the time of day at all. Frustrating. I like US stuff too but I'm never going to relate to rhymes about Cali or NY as much as I can about London's grimy streets, chicken shops, Happy Shopper or eating a chicken korma and naan etc. For that same reason I don't think grime will ever properly take off stateside, although who knows, perhaps I'm wrong.

I have never really been deep in any music scene, but I did liek the discs that HyperDub but out way back. Also does Burial count as Dubstep or is he something else? I like Burial.
