Prey - System Shock meets Metroid by Arkane
  • Yeah I'm not sold.
My heart sank with "I can tell you more once you get to engineering".
I bet if/when I got to engineering something else will happen which means they can't tell me the story yet. Best get to "medical" first.

Aye, that's the big question - how's it gonna hold up over 20 hours or so?

But, I'm still in - I see so many routes and doors and shortcuts and alternate ways to do things, even in that little space - there's precious few dead ends and most routes seem to loop round.

Plus, in this game you can change into a cup or towel. Day 1.

    Edit: dammit Haak.
  • I think some will absolutely love this. It looks great, and is doing a lot of stuff right.
I am very jaded with games right now so it will take a lot to hook me.

One last moan and a positive.

The loafing times are bloody long, but you get some lovely artwork to look at during them.

    Edit: leaving the spelling error.
  • I thought this was a straight-up shooter with some 'scary jump' moments.  If it's a touch more cerebral, then that's very welcome.  If it's System Shocky, has it got any RPG elements to it as well then?
It wasn't until I hit my thirties that I realised you could unlock rewards by exploring the map
  • You can chose your class like Cinty says. So far we know that there are Cup and Towel classes, they get positive buffs against liquids.

It's far more system shock / Deus Ex than trad FPS.

You get "neuromods" which basically unlock skills - there's the standard fare for this type of game such as hacking, lifting heavy objects, repairing, stealth etc. But there's also a load of alien ones it seems that give the ability to transform into inanimate objects etc.

So, if a room has a broken door you could repair it, try to get around it, or maybe teleport through a crack in it? So, very much that type of game.

I think weapons will also be upgradable but I'm not sure.

Aye, but I think maybe that was unavoidable. Most FPS games like this offer smaller areas or corridors, then make you wait at a second while a door opens to hide the loading. But this has a large open area with multiple rooms and routes, very few corridors, and it seems all of the rooms "hidden" behind doors are fully viewable or accessible from at least one angle.

So, I expect this game will load into a fair few large hub areas, each one requiring a load, but no interruptions in between.
  • You have three different skill trees available and can upgrade each of them (no need to choose just one) so that gives you a chance to sculpt your character's skill set somewhat but a glance over them and it seems the same old stuff really.
    Hacking, Health, Melee, Guns etc.

It is difficult to say how free you are from the demo as it is the first hour, not enough opportunity to branch.

I feel like there are going to be some great moments in this but the framework feels quite generic really. It certainly doesn't have the impactful first hour of the original. In fact it so far has fuck all of the original to the point I am not sure why it is called Prey.

I will definitely be reading reviews of this one.

    Dude, it gets better.

You can pick up kinds of rubbish including old banana skins and then find a recycling machine, where the waste is converted into useful materials.

You could play this game as a Space Hippie, refusing to fight the alien things, and just stealthing round picking up all that rubbish people left behind.

Just wait for my review buddy - I'll tell it how it is.
  • Definitely Cinty.
My mind could be changed yet but it's not a day one purchase for me.

  • It really is nothing to do with the original, they merely share the very broad theme of our hero being hunted by aliens. It's more an entire reimagining.

    Best gaem writer.
  • 2 minutes in an it's obvious it's dishonoured reskined. That's not a bad thing.
  • I tried this last night.  It didn't really gel for me (to the degree that I turned it off before I'd even got to the end).  I think I'll have to try it again some other time when I'm feeling less exhausted, because there was a lot there I ought to have liked.  Indeed, I really wanted to enjoy it.

Without getting too spoilery, I thought the premise was great, and it also meant I got to fulfil my childhood dream of running around with a Bugsy Malone style splat gun.  It's an interesting world, that I was keen to explore.  But I really hated the feel of it - it felt really floaty and disconnected, and the combat particularly seemed messy and unsatisfying.  (The gun felt about as useful as an actual Bugsy Malone splat gun would do.)

Like I say, I've a feeling that with more time, and me in a better mood, it might well click - but so far I'm afraid the demo's put me off if anything...
  • Christ, the music.
Controls a bit iffy. Faffing around with a wrench. Uninspired enemy design. Nice ideas story wise. A bit floaty.

Damn loafing times, always fecking things up!
  • I'm going to refer to them as loafing times from now on, it seems fitting.
  • It's the only problem with having stuff installed on the SSD, loafing times are minimised

Agreed with gameplay, the graphics also leave much to be desired considering this is Arkane and they've done wonders with the Dishonored series.

That music though, especially when you get into the Helicopter.

Edit* Playing with a set of beats headphones and the sound design is definitely the star here. Think this will be something I'll like. Loved System Shock back in the day.
  • I can't tell if this music is good or bad - people just keep saying "the music!"

Live and Griff's tome make me think it is bad but Haak seems to suggest it is good?
