    Aye. Proper nasty, that.
  • Still, if it was truly evil and wrong then the invisible hand of the market would, you know, do a thing, and then there’d be no problem anymore. What we definitely do not want is more nanny-state regulation because that’s basically communism. Are you a communist, g?

You have too much faith in our species.
  • Um.
I'm still great and you still love it.
  • Don't you believe in the market Face?
  • I'm fucking confused right now. Was cinty's post that hard to parse?

    Put on your market face.
  • Funnily enough, I'm on the way to the market in about 10 minutes.

Not watched because I'm lasy, I know that UEFA rules mean playing in European comps clubs have to remove gambling sponsors but also that PL is watched everywhere. So do the Belgians have a few guys pixellating shirts before showing highlights?? Like Jap porn

hahaha, ok will watch. I'm so used to absorbing (ignoring) all information through osmosis

edit: ahhhh, lootboxes, bang on, that shit is shit, and is probably one of the reasons I've not bothered with this generation, really disgusts me

We saw a lot of stuff about players not finishing games about ten years ago, lots of talk about players not getting their money's worth out of the game, and now stuff like this does the same but even worse. I guess I'm far better off watching games on YouTube instead

  • Given that gambling is pretty much illegal on 99% of the Chinese mainland, Ive always found the number of Chinese language gambling ads at prem matches to be...weird and icky.

You could argue that they’re not targeted at mainlanders, but other Chinese speaking areas but, if that’s the case, why are most in simplified Chinese?

Abit more progress seems to have been made in the UK. I'll warn you though, it's Jim Sterling. I know he's not everyone's cup of tea but it's an interesting listen imo.

  • Non-cosmetic loot boxes in paid for titles, I agree. In F2P titles? What is it that people want exactly?.. to have a totally free game that no one pays any money into? Is it just the entire concept of F2P that people don't like? Why aren't things like MtG and Hearthstone pulled into this discussion? (too nerdy compared to FIFA, most probably). Every video I've seen on this subject is about FIFA or Star Wars - premium titles that then ask you to pay money. The concept of a loot box / gacha / lucky dip / panini sticker pack isn't a bad one in and of itself, it's the implementation and context.

There's definitely a discussion to be had here, and having to pay to be competitive in a full price title can gtf. In a F2P title? I don't think so. The best F2P titles have it so you can be competitive in certain modes / up to a degree, but monetising players get that boost.
  • I am totally fine with lootbox mechanics in F2P, however I do think that children should be off limits for them, I don't think that is unreasonable.

Obviously you have a stake in this having worked on Gears Pop. For what it is worth I didn't have an issue with what I played of that game. It felt like there was a balance that made playing rewarding but with space for purchasing to accelerate progress.
Was it also yourself who went half crazy topping a league in some F2P game one xmas? That was amusing tbf.

I would agree as well that it is the implementation, presentation and limitations.
With things like panini stickers, Magic cards, Pokemon cards etc the product has a value as it can be resold or traded freely. Sure for every Man United shiny badge there are probably hundreds of Carlton Coles but the decision of what to do with that sticker is totally owned by the consumer, which is almost never true of games.
I remember swapping inches high stacks of stickers for those last few shinies to complete my 95/96 prem book. Worst case scenario, stick em on your lunch box. I found an old storage box in my dad's shed the other day with 7 Chris Coleman stickers on it, I don't even support Palace.

I think people may go after EA because they are the big scalp. Not only are they the ones most likely to push it but they lead the way for other pubs to do the same. EA and 2k are by far the worst given their influence, especially as sports games are such a huge genre and one that is enjoyed by people perhaps not in the gaming loop.
  • This seven times on a box full of creosote decanted into various squash bottles. What a career.

  • Yeah I went hard on Heavenstrike and played for over 24hrs straight one Xmas, finished 7th in the world that season + beat all the top JP players at least once (only a couple had a better w/l against me), and you know what I'd do it all again! Love that game.

I'd welcome regulation and think children should be protected (or parents educated) but some of the discourse smacks of traditional core gamers not liking a different shade of gaming. As stated tho, p2w in an already paid for, premium title itf.
  • Fortnite really do have it made; f2p and all the cash from cosmetics. Wtf. Talk about right game, right time.
  • Yeah Fortnite is quite the thing.
I think they caught the maturing Minecraft kids with the build mechanics and offered shooting, which is what the bigger boys play.
  • When it comes to Fortnite and other F2P games do you not think there is a bit of dubious morality in how the developers construct their Battlepass systems to keep players playing and paying?

I don’t ask as a trick question, or a dig. I’ve okayed and enjoyed many F2P games but there are definitely times when I look at the systems behind it and feel kind of gross knowing how they are built to squeeze, and for a lot of them the primary audience is kids and the peer pressure that comes from being involved.
  • I'm not familiar with how Battlepass and that works.

The peer pressure on skins, I would say it is a modern day version of what has been happening for decades. I saw a post on the Guardian article on this subject today. Someone whose kid was distraught because they wanted the Fortnite skin their friends had. It isn't a good thing that kids get into that state but it is a tale as old as time. Kids throwing a wobbler in supermarkets or Toys R Us aisles, it is the same thing.
It is rank capitalism but if that is to be the world they grow up in then learning that having a strop over a product gets them nowhere is a life lesson that must be learned.

I'll be honest, I don't know how the fortnite bp works, what's the deal?

Also, what's your position on f2p in general?
