Christ, I’ll never forget the argument I had with my mum about a pair of trainers that were cool at the time and which she couldn’t afford to buy a child who’d grow out of them in 6 months. I felt I was missing out there too, but I learnt a lesson from it.

    Are you a vulnerable customer?

Again, please show me some proof of this being an issue and I’m willing to reconsider. I have trouble believing that vulnerable customers would be sucked into lootboxes over and above online casinos or fixed odd betting machines. If it is happening, feel free to share this.
  • You honestly can't see how someone would be suckered into spending money on IAP in games over what you mention? I'm utterly staggered by this.

A whole new shit storm that builds on what we're talking about. A part of me wants to games industry to implode because it really has turned into a vile, unsavory place.
  • Aye, stick it in a bin.
  • This place is pretty damn echo chambery tbh, which is understandable ofc - we're all middling-aged blokes (mostly) and have had our whole lives with single purchase games. Gacha systems for sure can be implemented awfully, but they can also be implemented well.

Don't think anyone really answered before either so again, does anyone use gacha?
  • The fuck is gacha????

I believe it was what the band Cleopatra were inviting to come in.
  • Are you referring to the plastic eggshell things with toys in, or is this a term now used to describe blind buying in games as well?
  • "Gacha (or Gachapon) is a monetisation technique used in many successful Japanese free-to-play games. Originally a term used for Japanese Toy machines, this is used to describe games that pull a selection of data, people, heroes, etc. from a large pool at random."

So whilst the game is free you pay for the heros basically.

Fire emblem mobile is one example I can think of off the top of my head. Would League of Legends be one as well (edit: no, as you don't buy the heros blind in LoL, you know what you are getting)

I've played Clash Royale Nick, and in the end paid probably around £20, which for a year's constant play was quite fair I thought. I believe there are quite a few big spenders on Clash.

If anyone thinks lootboxes aren't going to be an issue on console in the coming years. Supercell (who publish the clash games) turned over £2.3 billion with a profit of £924 million last year. They have a grand total of 3 live games running at the current time and all are free to download and start playing.

    I don't mind the cosmetic rewards but pay-to-win is a big no-no.
  • Re: tax-avoidance

    Interesting vid, cheers gav.
  • Gotta thank Tempy for getting me into him. Almost all of his videos are of a high standard.
  • In-game spending, including mobile purchases, should reach 50% of industry revenue by 2019, up from about 35% last year, according to projections by Goldman Sachs reported by Barron's. Meanwhile, the fastest growing revenue source for Activision and EA is in-game spending

These trends promise to send game makers' profit margins yet higher. The virtual goods called items typically have very small development costs, and thus represent almost pure profit, per Barron's. As a result, it is much more profitable for the game makers to extend the lives of old games by adding opportunities for in-game spending, than it is to introduce new games. New games can have high development and marketing costs, meaning that a flop can be a financial disaster.
Another profit-enhancing trend is the move towards downloads of games over the internet, which do not have the manufacturing and distribution costs associated with sales of games on physical discs. In the second quarter, Activision derived 80% of its revenue from low-cost digital sales, Barron's adds. Mobile gaming is another growth area. EA produces roughly $650 billion of annual revenue from mobile, Barron's indicates, about 13% of total revenues, per Investopedia data.
Operating margins for these companies during their most recent fiscal years are, per Investopedia data: Activision, 23%; Take-Two, 11%; and EA, 28%. O'Shea tells Barron's that EA is on track to exceed 40% in the next few years, up from 10% in fiscal 2013

I look forward to all these profits being ploughed into new IP that can be released without financial risk. That's how it works right?

E.A. had a ton of bad press over the Star Wars: Battlefront 2 loot crate play to win bollocks and have backtracked some, sooo keyboard warring does work. Cancelled my preorder anyways.
retroking1981: Fuck this place I'm off to the pub.
  • Gacha is a pretty standard term for any loot/box/pull system where you get a thing or things from a potential pool. Req packs, cars, heroes, guns, hats whatever, it's all gacha.

On a train or I'd reply more. Tbc

An operating margin of 10% sounds incredibly low to me. Maybe I’m wrong?
  • About $100-200 million in take twos case.

Making a penny on every pound of sales.

I don't know the market so I couldn't tell you if the margins you see above are any good or not. I suspect they had a couple of big games sell poorly or have to be delayed past year end. The senior management team will try though to make them as consistent as possible year on year rather than peak and trough so that shareholders don't get jumpy and pull out. This is one of the reasons you see major releases brought to market in slightly unfinished states.

Tesco hopes to boost operating margins to 4% by 2020

Supermarkets are exposed to rather less risk than game publishers, I’d have thought.

My confession: I'm getting rid of Fifa 18 because I spunked £150 in total on FUT since release (lied in the thread due to that darling shame), and I could see it being way more. I had a gambling addiction when younger (fruit machines like a mug) and could feel the same pull with Fifa Points, the risk/reward. Was starting to justify in my head spending £50 every couple weeks on points for packs, which as anyone knows it won't just be £50 after a short while. And this from someone who doesn't even play it online, so it was completely pointless.

So either I'm a mug for not just going nah mate I won't bother, or such things are fucking ridiculous for those with the inclination. If I'd been unemployed still, bye bye my benefits each week. Its why I never used to buy Fifa, and why I won't again

Actually, here’s something I’ve never thought about before: Y’know how movie studios set up new shell companies for each production? So that many of the risks against a movie are just against that movie? Do games work that way now, too? I mean, they don’t seem to …

Even Radiohead do this for every tour.

That’s a fucking ballache. Fair play for ditching before it became horrid.
