The Last Jedi & Episode 9 - Discussion and SPOILERS (that means stay out if you have not seen it)

This certainly was a thread. Just to put in, I found it a 3/5 film

I can’t be arsed to read all of this, but overall I enjoyed the movie. I liked the fact that it tried to do something different, and despite the fact that it didn’t quite have the tempo of Abram’s effort, it still worked. It looked spectacular too, the moment when Admiral cocktail dress destroyed Snoke’s ship was one of the most visually gratifying moments I’ve ever seen on film.

It would be to both your benefit not to go back through this thread. Think of pages 1-54 as the Prequel Trilogy.

There was the bit where we discussed if Poe or Finn was the catcher.

I hate him for being called Ryan and misspelling it, parents or no. I thought it was Ree-ann for a good while, and possibly a woman.

And what kind of actual richman director gets flustered by nerds and pulls out a geekology. Away with him.

This. I’d have just responded with “fuck off nerd” and left it at that. If it can work for Trump it can work for anyone.

  • Also it doesn't matter if in a book that may or may not be cannon it references it. It doesn't make what happened a good decision. What was he expecting? The Internet to go "Oh guys! It's in this book!!! We get it now!!".
I'm falling apart to songs about hips and hearts...
  • Seeing those tweets from RJ just confirmed to me that he really doesn't get why people are mad and why his decisions were shit. He pulled out a nerd book sure. Where in the shots he shared did it say the jedi performing the hologram would die from the effort?
Also see the other header in one of the shots? Art of The Small - where a jedi shrinks their force presence to the size of an atom.
    lol

Mainly Im annoyed at his Leia responses. I don't think he gets that its his execution of her using the force that is shit. NOT the fact that she used it. He thinks it wasnt a big deal for Leia to pull herself back into the ship because zero g. But clearly she somehow protected herself using the force if EVERYONE else on the bridge was dead no?
Also his response about the Knights of Ren. He couldnt fit them in cos the film was too full. Mate you wrote the fucking film. You purposefully left them out. Just admit to that besides dancing around the issue.

Also the twitter moment is called "RJ silences critics of holo Luke". Does he fuck.

I didn’t get the impression of force protection around Leia, just breath holding.

The rest doesn’t bother me, it’s space magic, innit?
  • For the record, I don’t particularly like Luke’s Force projection thing, and I absolutely hate Leia Poppins. But...

RJ can’t win here. The responses of some here read as though those twitter responses are all he has had to say on the topic. Elsewhere, he’s been criticised for supposedly inventing unwelcome Force powers. When he points out that he isn’t, he’s criticised for responding, for the way he has responded or, in SFN’s case, other stuff in the book he didn’t use but is nevertheless considered shit.

Then, when he responds in a different way regarding the Leia question, in exactly the way some think he should’ve responded to the Force projection question, he’s criticised for that too.

And Ninja, yes he wrote the film, but your reaction suggests that you’ve never written anything. When you are editing your work down to size, you have to cut out things you would rather not. Sometimes (often) that includes removing parts that you would prefer over parts that remain, for the sake of the overall piece. It’s not as easy as saying, “You wrote it, you get to include everything you want.”
  • Ah no I'm mljust laughing at the book a little, force prscence the size of an atom? C'moon!!!

Regarding editing, I do not think that's the case. I think he hated a great many of things JJ introduced in TFA.i don't think the Knights were ever a proper consideration. That's only going off a couple of interviews I heard.
I dunno, my view on some of RJ's responses is he is kinda saying fuck you to the third movie in the trilogy. He didn't kill off Leia, he killed Snoke, reduced the rebels to about 20,no Knights of Ren and a dead Luke. I agree, he is in a bit of a no win situation trying to answer critics.

I don't think it's a black mark on TLJ that the Knights of Ren didn't appear. With Snoke out of the way, there's more room for additional bad guy people in Episode IX.

Just going on last Jedi, I quite enjoyed the snoke scenes. I thought he came across as suitable menacing and pure in his cruelty in his actions. I was sad to see him go because I think the next film could have done with him, even if he ended up the same way.

Ren’s a much better baddie, I can let go of Snoke if it gives Adam Driver more screen time.
  • I don't get the RJ hate, i choose to hate Disney. They told him what to cover and he did that. They told him that Luke needs to go too. They

Disney probably want to milk a 6 year animated series to stream on their netflix thing that will explain Luke's academy, Snoke, the Knights of ten, etc. Milk that fucking shit till the titty fall off.

It’d be difficult to give him more screen space, so more screen time is the only way to go.

I know is this supposed to be a facetious comment but I will be genuinely shocked if this is not the synopsis of the next animated series.

He's a more interesting character. I don't feel he is a true baddie. Not yet. He's almost the hero and not in a case way.

  • Killed his dad, nearly killed his mum, tried to kill his uncle. Absolute role model.
  • He always looks like he is doing this things to impress snoke. I don't know, I'm not convinced at all by his evilness. I always feel redemption is on the cards. Not like old snokey. There was a bad guy who would be evil til the end.
