Apple buds are more than capable. I own a fair few pairs across the quality spectrum and the difference is pretty noticeable straight away for me. Better separation, speed, imaging and all the either nonsense. Not so extreme; I'm talking less than $100 to $1k+, not $5 to $80k
However, totally agree when it comes to characteristics. Beyer T70 is very different from HD650 despite being roughly on par technically. I get that multi song need then. Probably suggests I need to spend less time dickin about with cans at home mm

Pretty sure I'm down for pretty neutral sound when it comes to sound an eq. Need to work on my vocab and ear some more with testing sorta, but I'm big on seperation, big on finding a way to solid bass without distortion or losing other things in mix.
Have absolutely settled on leaving "tone defeat" on on the nad amp.
When I was toying with eq settings on phone, (and, when I think about it, every sound system I've ever had), I've either gone vanilla, or "rnb" and dropped the bass.
Actually, I lie slightly. I did up the bass on my little Grace digital amp, but that's the only time I've ever had to.
They were about to "recycle" / throw them away! I saw them and I couldn't help myself. They looked so strange that I figured they'd at least make for a good prop... I bought a couple of adapters and they actually work! The sound is pretty good for a pair of headphones made in the 70s I think. I still prefer my MDR-1A, but then again nothing beats free.

For reasons involving it being fun bargain hunting and enjoying a new found love for sound quality in all places I am after suggestions for sorting stereo speakers for my bedroom and for the back of the house.
We have a long thin house, with open plan out back. So main speakers are in lounge, kitchen is at back door. Those speakers cover that area well if I'm home alone, but it's also possible, if you're so inclined to manage with a Bluetooth speaker in kitchen and have lounge not too interrupted.
We've got a small courtyard out back, and current otpions for music out there is Bluetooth speaker again, or cranking the main soundsystem.
Don't want sonos.
Would kill to be able to get more chromecast audio's. I onyl have 1, and it's set up on main system.
Would like to connect them all to wifi. Rather than Bluetooth. (unless they stay on and it's simply reconnecting phone each time)
Want pairs. Dont want single speaker solutions.
Neither will need to cover a large area.
Can't do much around hiding cords/wiring.
Thinking revisiting pc speakers might be a go. Or finding some old Bose.
As far as the wifi goes, what's out there that's not ridiculous in cost?
There are some excellent BT speakers that come in singles or can be doubled up to be paired though the ones I am thinking of cost a tad...

They don't say that Google Home or Home Mini can be stereo paired, but they can. I sometimes get the odd phase issue, but then I'm pairing a Home with a Home Mini and they sit in a weird orientation to me. SO maybe the newer nest versions are better

Fair enough, was just my instinctive first thought as they've worked so well for me, hence me thinking of the chromecast audio before, which seemed to work out fine for you

True, but power is only to one side, the cable between limits distance apart. We have shelves on either side of bed. Would be handy to put one either side. Mayber.
In the kitchen, because I want to cheat and have them close to back double doors, they'd need to be at least a metre apart. Maybe more.
Yeah but the amp is only in one speaker it needs the cable to send signal to the other speaker, if that speaker is wireless it will need a power supply (and another amp) inside it as well. The cable between is just two channel simple bell wire, so yo could easily cut, and crimp in some extra length if needed

Yeah sound bars are useful but not especially good, imo. There are some pretty nice soundboard though from more niche high end companies that could be worth a listen at least.
Point taken on BT; there's a guy who does very detailed reviews of any decent sized BT speaker up to and including obscure Swedish brands that I can't get here but would appear to sound pretty amazing for the form factor. I'll see if I can dig him up, just for lols
