Dead Cells - The Bear and Badger

So this game is pretty awesome! Y'all should play it!

Currently "Early Access" on Steam, but there looks to be a ton of stuff here already. Definitely one to watch as it heads for full release (on PS4, Bone & Switch).

And props to DS, who gave it to me via Steam for unknown reasons :-D

It's kinda Soulsy (i.e. hard, with much death), and kinda Castlevania (vibe, whips, doors n stuff), and kinda rogue like (different levels each time - which I normally hate, but works here well) and kinda metroid (as you get better shit over time, which lets you got to bits of the random levels that you wouldn't have got to before).

Unlocks work by collecting cells of your fallen people, but you need to bank them at the end of levels or, well, tough shit.

And the action is super-fast pace, with pixels flying everywhere, and nice satisfying weaponry.

I know a few others are on it - no doubt further progressed than I am - but this surely deserves a thread! (And I don't think I've missed one... have I ...?)

I played a fair whack of it on yarr over a couple of days so thought I'd buy it for the two people who I knew would appreciate it. Gonna start again on Steam soon, game is beast.

Yeah it's good, trap meta is strong still. I've seen the Souls comparison a lot and I don't see it.

Yeah it's a bit tenuous. Lite exposition, demanding combat, losing shit when you die, arpg... But very different feel.

How do you stop the screensaver kicking in, without having to turn it off in windows?

Trying to confirm what are perm upgrades and what aren't. Especially when spending cells.

Also, tickling green stuff and rubbing statues.

I'm yet to beat the first boss, I reckon. Have realised that I can kinda skip past enemies if I just want to beat him with less stuff.

I assume if I beat first boss I'll unlock some. More stuff that's a bit perm.

Everything you can upgrade is permanent, as far as I know?

Any upgrades you spend cells on remain in effect. Stat upgrades you pick up during the run are reset when you die.

If it is a weapon, it will drop immediately when you complete it, and then be shuffled into the rotation of that weapon type (be it sword, shield, bow, etc)

There are things you can spend cells on that will increase the variety of the starting weapons too.

Mutators are only applied to the run when you pick them, but you can increase their effects by upgrading them.

If you’re struggling to progress, I recommend focusing on stuff that synergies with traps.

Also I don’t know when you get it, but The Forge lets you permanently buff weapons.

Yeah, I got the permanent ones. (just paid for random bow/y/purple thing.

It was the cost of individual weapons and the fact they dropped that confused me.

I assume it's finding blueprints to unlock. Cells to pay, it drops immediately, then is in shop rotation?

Sounds like he might be the penultimate boss to me.

The fact that this is arriving in August on Switch is great, but I'm starting to feel a bit overwhelmed by the number of games I want to play that are released each month/year. I'm struggling to keep up, and I've still got 4 or 5 games on my list from 2017.

I'm the opposite man, there's like two coming out I can be arsed with. I've got 20 or so on the backlog and can't even be arsed with those.

Gaming is great right now but I'm in a slump with it.
