I haven't played New Vegas but wasn't it the closest to what the old games offered in terms of freedom in how to play?
I was also thinking of Divinity, which I also haven't played, but all I read about it seems like an extension of what those old classic RPGs like Fallout offered.

There were also horrific loading times in some places, made worse by the mission structure. I remember doing a basic fetch quest for the Elvis bloke. That involved three lengthy loading screens there and the same back again to cover a distance of about 500m.

Could it really have been any worse than normal bethesda games of that era?
