    1986, Yokosuka
In the suburbs of Yokosuka, the Hazuki Bukan Jujutsu Dojo is visited by some mysterious men. The master of the dojo, Iwao Hazuki, confronts the man in the deep green Chinese long gown, but is vastly overpowered and falls. His son tries to help, but is easily brushed aside. Held captive, Ryo was questioned by the mysterious man.

"Where is the mirror?" The man pressed. With nothing else he could do, Iwao tells of the mirror’s whereabouts.

The mysterious man, now in possession of the bronze mirror inscribed with a dragon, turns to Iwao and says, "You remember Zhao Sunming? You killed him!" And with that, the man delivers Iwao the killing blow.

The man turns to leave with the bronze mirror, and is called by his underling, "Lan Di." On his back is embroidered a dragon, flashing wickedly.

“Keep friends, those you love, close to you.”

With Iwao’s last words his heart, Ryo sets off on a long journey, swearing to avenge his father.

Ryo finds out a man named Yuanda Zhu has information on the bronze mirror and Lan Di, and is hiding out in Kowloon.

Making his way into Kowloon with ally, Ryo makes his way to Yuanda Zhu through the underside of Hong Kong, ruled by Chinese mafia. Ryo gets the information he needs from Yuanda Zhu, but loses him to Lan Di.
To go after Lan Di, Ryo must head to Bailu Village in Guilin. Once there, he meets a young girl who will forever change his destiny.

Can any trace of the man who killed his father be found?

I got swept up in the early hype.  Enjoyed what I played, but never finished either of them.  I’m...in?

I'll buy it if they've fixed the controls, which they allege they have. But it's no Yakuza.

Still, Bone version of 1 & 2 gives me hope for a Bone version of 3, despite the fact that in my heart of hearts I can’t help but feel that 3 will disappoint.
  • Thankfully they’ve included a modern controls option, as I recently struggled with another attempted play through of Shenmue.

It’s not the controls have dated over time.  They were always terrible.

TBF, basically all control schemes for 3D games that pre-date twin analogues were terrible.

Right, that's enough OPing for now.

  • The release date is the day the snow turned to rain.

I'm watching a playthough now from some Geordie bloke, and the first thing he says is "fucking hell, the controls", then the realisation that there wasn't a second analogue, with a load more f bombs whilst he tries to remember how to control it.

You don't get this with modern games, it's a lost art.
  • I miss those days, there was actual effort put in to making the camera decent in some games. Not any more, now everyone's just "yeah, the fuckers can move it themselves if it's not in a good position".

You're missing out on a whole world of looking at objects and then picking them up and putting them back down.

  • Really can't imagine modern gamers enjoying these unless they've done something radical to them.

Yeah, literally, it's pretty clear Shenmue was a big influence on Gone Home even though their stories are dissimilar.
"ERE's like Mr. Muscle, he loves the things he hates"
  • That's by far the best thing I've ever heard about Shenmue. Pity it's not the full story.
  • Lovely OP, good work.  I doubt I'll play either again but I did love both at the time, the sequel in particular.  Still worried no.III, hopefully I won't end up wishing they hadn't bothered, but nothing I've seen of it so far really appeals.

Digital price for the ports Is $30, not sure what that equates to over here. Literal conversion is £21, so £25 maybe?
