    Original post follows...

As mentioned already in the Music thread, the Now! series has hit 100. The excellent Popjustice site has created a playlist for the occasion and while it's full of it's fair share of bangers, let's face it, I think we could do better.

So, I think probably the best way to do this is to list your favourites and hopefully there will be an outright winner. If not, I will produce a shortlist of the popular choices and we can decide from there. They will be added to a Spotify playlist (hopefully someone will step in with some of the other streaming services).

As a bonus, I will create a proper MP3 playlist and when it is completed, upload it to the Bear and Badger Dropbox.

So, without further ado, let's kick off with Now That's What I Call Music, which was released back in November 1983 on album and cassette only (I think).
    Let's go exploring....

Yikes. I remember the first album being advertised on TV. The mascot was a cartoon pig for some reason. There was a catchphrase about pigging out or something.

    I was 17 in '83

    Torn between Tyler and Oldfield.

EDIT: Tyler - couldn't leave that one out.
  • I only remember the first 3 or 4 of these. Didn't have much interest in pop music after that.

I'd probably go for Rocksteady Crew, but wouldn't begrudge Bonnie a win with that song.
  • I’m gonna try to keep a list of my own going as well as the Official B&B list.

    1. Down Under – Men At Work

Tough choice, Now 1. Midnight Shadow is clearly the better song. Total Eclipse is far and away the biggest track on there. But I’m going with my heart, and my heart says that Down Under is the Total Pop Banger™ of the lot.
  • A link to the NOW website with the track listings would be useful in the OP Oli.
Come with g if you want to live...
  • I think Oli is posting the tracklist for each one individually and we vote one at a time.
  • Also, TEOTH? You'd have to be insane to open a pop playlist with that. It's a classic, but it kills your playlist stone dead.

  • Safety Dance. An absolute classic and a statement of intent.

Aye, Bonnie is a closer, not an opener. Drunken singalong.

Indeed. Doing this on mobile is hard enough. If I can get on a laptop I'll flesh it out. Besides, listening to Now 1 right, er now on Spotify :)
    Let's go exploring....
  • Just noticed that Culture Club get two showings. Wonder how often that happens in the series.

    So are UB40.
  • Mine's Human League - Fascination.

I'm currently doing my own playlist and have reached Now 93. Now 92 was a real dip and they seem to have really tailed off, but Now 93 is up there with the very best. At least 6 stone cold classics.
  • G is trying to blow this thing wide open.  Are we thinking about creating a flowing playlist, or just doing favourites?
    You have minecraft?
  • My pick might be Phil you know.
  • This is not going to plan at all. Zero consensus so far and we’re only on volume one.
  • My pick might be Phil you know.

Since we’re talking about Culture Club and UB40 getting two songs each on there, how about Genesis and Phil solo both being present?

    Ban requests.

Edit: actually request, just realised Poppo isn’t advocating for the MOR pop goblin.
  • That's a tough one but it has to be Men without Hats Safety Dance, plus has one of the best music videos ever. Obviously where George RR Martin drew a lot of inspiration from when writing Game of Thrones.
Howard Jones' New song was up there too. 'Hoo, hoo hooooo!'

    And Kajagoogoo.

This was the only thing I was worried about. Will give it a few more hours otherwise might have to go down the shortlist route.

Safety Dance video gives me the creeps. Has a Wicker Man thing going on.
  • I'd go Double Dutch. Really sticks in the mind from back in the day, this and Buffalo Girls are legit McLaren bangers. The sound of the ropes takes me back, way back...
