Witness The Fitness
  • Could not be happier with the run I just did. In an effort to not bore myself yet another interval run, I decided to tackle the biggest hill in the village. Three times. Then sprint home.

Fucking aced it. Super proud of myself!
  • Nice work!

  • Strava says I did my second fastest 5k ever last night.

Still over 6 minutes slower than some of you insane Bastards!

  • Cool. I’ve got a 10k race on Sunday. Hilly one. Hopefully it’ll cool down a bit for Sunday morning.

First non-child-assisted park run in a while

    Literal re-baptism of fire

Nearly signed up for a half marathon last night. Chickened out at the last minute. October is a while away but fuck running in summer heat to train lol.
  • I think I’ve more or less completed swimming now. It’s good and everyone should try it so it’s a defo 10 for me. I can maybe only shave a few seconds here and there and so in an attempt to shake up my exercising I will be starting to think about doing a running.

So what kind of distance should I be looking to start at? Roughly what kind of times and what gear do I need as the basics? Can someone also tell me how to pick out actual running trainers in a sea of trainer trainers in the trainer shops? They all look like they should do the job but some also look like I’d be running on platform shoes filled with a lungs worth of air?

I went to a specialist running shoe place for mine, but can't really advise anything in general.

As for distance, I guess 5k is your standard starter. Park runs (https://www.parkrun.org.uk/) are a great way to keep momentum up. I guess if you've already got fitness cos swimming then potentially 10k. Hard to give a time to aim for tbh as it'll vary so much between folk. The other thing I like to do it's sign up for a race/charity thing to motivate me towards...

Same questions back at ya for swimming! I want to do triathlons, but I’m scared of the swimming bit. I can stay afloat, but I want to actually learn to do the swim bit reasonably properly. Where do I start? There’s a tri club meets at my local pool, but I don’t want to go until I’m at least competent at moving in the water.

  • So daddy, most triathletes need to learn to swim. They’re usually good at cycling and/or running but the swim lets them down so I wouldn’t worry too much about your quality. If you meet up with the tri club there’ll be plenty of people there of a similar ability and happy to help you along.
However a really good way of getting the basics sorted is something called Swimfit. These are courses originally funded by British Gas (of all firms) but carried on by *some* local authorities. It’s fucking brilliant tbh and will get non swimmers swimming but will also allow someone like me to have free coaching alongside them. It’s brilliant.
I’m a member of a Nuffield gym and these guys have also carried them on. Don’t know if there’s one in your area or not but if there is it might be worth signing up for a month or two.

Don’t - whatever you do - be tempted to try to learn in open water. It’s a pretty different type of swimming and will probably scare you off the sport for good.

Are you the guy in Huddersfield btw? If you are, I’ll just come and teach you. I grew up there and don’t live *too* far away even now. You can be my Daniel Son to my Mr Miaggi. (Sp. obvs).
  • Nah, I’m from Hudds but live in Newcastle. Cheers for the tips, I’ll look into that swimfit thing.

Asics gel kayano. I swear by them.

  • @Daddy, I did a sprint triathlon last year and just chilled out with the swim. Did breaststroke and saved my energy for the second two disciplines.

I’ve got some of them and I loved them but to be honest found them a bit heavy. Really like Adidas ultraboost now, thought it was a bit of marketing bollocks when boost was released but they do seem really well balanced for speed or distance.

Might be worth seeing if Adidas still give you a month to return your ultras so you can try them properly.

I got these or something like them (says Zoom on the bottom but can't find exact match). Very light and bouncy, game changer vs what I'd been wearing before (which admittedly were pretty shit).

I think they’re not talking at the mo. My race hasn’t gone over to Strava. Happens every so often.

  • With shoes, just try several on at a store and pick a pair you like. Only things you probably need to do see:

    1) whether you over pronate or not and therefore whether you need extra support. Get gait analysis at place like Runners Need.
    2) whether you want more forefoot cushioning or not.
    3) weight of the shoe. Probably only really important for race day or really shaving off seconds or milliseconds off your time!
I am a FREE. I am not MAN. A NUMBER.
  • To state the bleeding obvious, shoes that work for others and that others like may not be your thing.

Ended up having to manually upload. If you go to garmin connect on desktop then the activity and download the tcx file, you can then manually upload via strava’s site.

  • Had some lower back pain. My GOD it is annoying. Literally every moment hurts it. Just played footy and feels fine right now, fingers crossed. Got a feeling running might be the problem, unfortunately. Oh well, still got squash, football, swimming, hitt :D
