Hi you don't seem to have taken my list into consideration. None of my games feature in the update.

It's been a good year as I finally joined the hip kids and bought a Playstation. Though ineligible The Last of Us was great and I adore swinging through Manhattan even though I'm not interested in Spider-Man, spiders or mans. I've decided to focus on two games here though, because I'm tired.

1. Mirror Drop

The only game I played that felt properly new. It's a puzzle game with ray-traced graphics and a large part of the puzzle is making sense of each level's layout. Nearly everything is reflective, so at first you're floating in a strange place, unsure which way is up. In time you come to understand the often surprisingly simple level layout and can solve the puzzles. 

It's something that's hard to get across in words but a joy to experience. It's a game full of beautiful eureka moments, with an incredible sense of space and some truly gorgeous visuals. Mind-blowing is over used but this was a special experience.

2. Red Dead Redemption 2

By contrast, Red Dead doesn't do much new, instead it builds a wonderfully atmospheric world on a creaking framework. There are subtle innovations that I hope become standard, though. Playing games where you can't hold a button to talk to characters or defuse some combat situations feels weird after this. 

It's perhaps the most conflicted game I've played, brave and cowardly, state-of-the-art and utterly antiquated, stupidly murderous and extremely peaceful. The story is often bad and the main missions can be downright ugly but the world is so good that I'll remember some moments for years. When you're trotting around at your own pace it is pure serene escapism and I'm still happily exploring after tens of hours, looking for treasure, falling off my horse and barely massacring anyone.

Tetris Effect rotated through my letter box today and I'm sure it'll also be amazing but that'll do, little pig. Enough gold in those two to make this a very solid year, I reckon.
