I know, but face to face I don't think those bets would have happened. Nor do I trust the RNG (despite having had plenty of hands like that IRL)
  • Nevermind the RNG, could you trust a poker site to hold that much cash of yours? Of course it all came crashing down on Black Friday, along with the accounts of everyone using Full Tilt Poker.

You're right though, irl poker is different although the pots can be bigger even if the losses are a lot less. If it's a $3K buy in tourney and 1000 people (plus tv sponsors) then you'd expect the final table pots to be huge but to lose $4M of your own cash in a single session online is nuts.

Isildur1 came out of nowhere to become one of the biggest players in online history. He was just a kid really and was quite a fan of going all-in with silly money and would never get called because it was madness. The only way to combat this was to bite the bullet and start calling or all-in yourself. For a brief period online poker went insane. Then he started doing the same at live tournaments

If you get the chance there's a thing about him here.

  • I've just lost with trips 3 times in a row, twice after going all-in on the flop.

  • For thr first time ever I went full tilt last night and lost £500, a third of my bankroll. Lesson learnt. It's going to take a lot of grinding to build that back up.

  • I ran out mid tournament to buy wine. My bad.

Internet poker is too boring for me, I get far too easily distracted.
  • It's different, more rash. When I went to the Casino to play I was easily the most aggressive player. Not loose, just really aggressive. I was surprised how many people were folding but then again they were loose and non aggressive, apart from a Chinese guy that was overbetting like a nut.

Will do mate. What stakes do you play for?
  • 25 quid (including a £5 bounty). Usually 7-8 players 15 min blinds, start with about 100bb. Game is usually done by 10.30/11. Decent players sometimes, but mostly straightforward / limpy play. Been playing with them, on and off since 2009 or so, used to be a fiver and multiple pubs league, with a final in a casino in Luton. Cashed 1st for 600 dollars in a Vegas tournament while on a bday bash off the back of playing with these guys.

  • I'm starting to think I should just play poker online for a living. Downside is child will think it's cool. Not the best example.

It's pretty dull, I always found. But I guess all jobs are really...

This. I tried my hand (!) at it for a while between contracts, and average of about 3 hours a day over a couple of weeks netted me just shy of £340, roughly equivalent to £20K salary. This was years ago before the family, and before the Great US Cull. I'd imagine it's harder nowadays, the yanks were uniformly terrible.
  • The curve is about managing multiple tables. I could probably start making $100 a day from $10 sngs. You just start lowercstakes and build yourself up so the curve is fine. It just takes refinements in play style as you progress so can take a while to adjust to a step up but if you're careful it's ok.

Muzz is right, it can get boring, but then it's time to move up and adjust your game. It's finding out why the playstyle is different on higher buy ins that keeps it interesting. It seems to be a bit wavey - play is too loose at really small stakes, then too passive as you go up, then more aggressive.

  • The problem is how to deal with variance and downswings. To play 10 dollar sit and gos, multitabling let's say 3 or 4, you should probably have a bank of about 1000 dollars minimum

I don't play online fyi. Played poker stars once, won a tourney, cashed out and I was getting 90p a dollar, fuck that.

Edit - came third from a big chip lead actually, not happy about that

  • Yeah I get the bankroll thing, I've been doing it since the start. I read somewhere your bankroll should be at least 20x the tourney fee so I did a cautious 40x and grinded microstakes. I've got over 5K now and it's for poker only.

Are live tells an actual thing btw? Seems like bullshit to me but I'm not live experienced enough to know, and I'm very tempted by the occasional Casino trip. Some poker forum guys swear it's a thing and live and online are different, but the two times I went to the casino I cleaned up, admittedly in a hoodie just in case. I probably looked like I was shitting myself every hand because I was, but I played my usual online game.

The thing is, some of these casino players I was chatting to are experienced live regs (waiting for the drunk crowd to rock up) but I've probably played more hands than a live player who has been playing for 20 yrs. I played my normal online game and it went better than I was expecting. Maybers luck both times. I'm still calling bullshit on the reads thing but people swear it's a thing.

Harder. Not that I can claim to be a pro. And also people who play lots are less blatant, etc

Some do, some don't. You have to figure out which is which.
  • Not sure about tells. Like, I’ve definitely thought “ah ha!” And been wrong, and other times been right. For me the big difference with live play is more general than specific “movie style” tells: general demeanour, behaviour, body language. Do they count? Online, the only things you can do are play your cards / pot odds, and judge opponents’ play style.

It's definitely a collection of lots of little things that you develop an instinct for. It works best when it's intuitive, almost subconscious perception. When you think you've got someone's specific tell, you almost inevitably haven't, and are probably been suckered in.
  • The main thing is for me, is judging how they play hands. Everything else seems obtuse. Maybe it's natural live and online players think differently.

That's the only thing you can judge them on online though. It's the only information you have.

Maybe that's better, and the extra information is actually mord likely to be misinterpreted and lead to the wrong decision, especially if it's deliberately false information, but then that's what makes it so fun.
