Control is an upcoming action-adventure video game developed by Remedy Entertainment and published by 505 Games. The game revolves around the Federal Bureau of Control (FBC), a secret U.S. government agency tasked with containing and studying phenomena which violate the laws of reality. As Jesse Faden, the Bureau's new Director, players explore the Oldest House – the FBC's paranormal New York headquarters – and utilize powerful abilities in order to defeat a deadly enemy known only as the Hiss, which has invaded and corrupted reality. Control is set to be released on August 27, 2019 for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

Like Remedy's previous projects, Control is played from a third-person perspective, and is built using Remedy's proprietary Northlight Engine, which was first used on the company's previous title Quantum Break. As Jesse Faden, players wield the Service Weapon, a supernatural firearm that can be adapted into a variety of different forms with different combat applications. In addition to the Service Weapon, Jesse also possesses a variety of supernatural abilities, including telekinesis, levitation, and the ability to control certain enemies. The Service Weapon and Jesse's abilities both expend Jesse's energy, necessitating a balance in their usage. The Service Weapon can be upgraded throughout the game via a skill tree; in order to gain new powers, players must locate various Objects of Power - ordinary items acted upon by supernatural forces - hidden throughout the Oldest House. Due to the versatility of the game's loadouts, Control's combat system can be customized and balanced to each player's personal preferences. Health in Control does not recharge automatically, and must be picked up from fallen enemies.

Control is set within the Oldest House, a featureless Brutalist skyscraper in New York City, which is referred to in-game as a "Place of Power." The Oldest House's interior is far larger than its exterior, an enormous, constantly shifting supernatural realm that defies the laws of spacetime. Control is built in the Metroidvania format, with a large world map that can be explored at a nonlinear pace, unlike Remedy's previous titles, which were primarily linear. As the player unlocks new abilities and clearance throughout the game, new areas of the Oldest House can be explored, opening various side-quests. Certain areas known as Control Points can be used to fast travel throughout the building after they have been cleared of enemies. A new A.I. system known as the Encounter Director controls interactions with enemies based on the player's level and location in the Oldest House. Enemies in Control are predominantly human agents of the FBC possessed by the Hiss, an otherworldly force. They range from standard humans carrying firearms to heavily mutated variations which possess a variety of superpowers. Some of Jesse's abilities allow her to seize control of enemies' minds temporarily, turning them into her allies, and allowing their abilities to be used for the player's benefit.

Cannot wait for this, got it on pre-order.
  • It definitely caught my eye.
It is the Quantum Break guys right? That was ok but no part of the story or gameplay gripped me enough to stick with it.

The setting and framing of this might do enough to carry the serviceable gameplay.
  • I am highly cynical.

Feels ripe for, oh I thought we'd be doing this freestyle but it's all scripted.
I'm still great and you still love it.

    Yeah Alan Wake/Quantum.

Fucking loved Alan Wake so they've got a lot of leeway with me.
  • Hey guys let's do Quantum again but make it StrangerThings-ey.

  • I liked Alan and Quantum. Will be in for this on the cheap.

  • Hey guys let's do Quantum again but make it StrangerThings-ey.

I imagine that this is a way to effectively do Quantum Break again but this time on multiple platforms. I think the IP for that game belongs to Microsoft, so a spiritual successor it is.

I hope it does well, but I doubt I’ll buy it. I like Remedy, but I’ve never really clicked properly with any of their games.
  • Even Max Payne back in the day? I played heaps of Max Payne 2. Loved it.
  • Max Payne was probably the one I enjoyed the most. Some proper ropey sections and design choices, though.

Basically, I think they make cool stuff, but there’s always something about each of their games which frustrates me and causes me to bounce off.
  • Fair enough.
I'm hoping Control is as good as it looks. Seems to me a lot of that will come down to the controls. Flying about the place is hard to get right.
  • I've got an eye on this, but damn there's a lot coming out in the next month or so. Even if it's good, it'll have to wait.
  • Never heard of this...now I’m super excited. First week off of 3 next week so this will be enjoyed!
  • No confidence in the actual mechanical parts but the Beyond the Black Rainbow stylings may have found their home in b-tier action schlock

This is right but being a massive remedy fan, to the point of defending Alan Wake on old room, I have misgivings. They've blotted their copy book for sure but I'll give em a ride.
  • Was partly a swipe at Gav’s limited field of references to draw on too lol lub u gab
  • This is just Quantum Break (the last of my 'buy on release and never play' accidents), isn't it?

Console copies have shipped early. Impressions are very good.

That makes me very happy. Will pick up first thing Tuesday morning.
  • Reviews coming through and seem solid enough. Not one to rush out and get, but worth picking up eventually I think (and after another performance patch or two perhaps).
