First hour of Pikuniku done, that can go in the lesser known but worth investigating column. I've played the co-op stages in the past but that was my first proper session with the story mode. Good fun.
I've bought so many of their games I can't see the discount on most titles. I played Not a Hero and Mother Russia Bleeds on PS+, so I can see they're £5.84 each. Strongly recommend both at that price, Wulverblade is the only scrolling beat 'em up that trumps the latter in recent years.
Typically iffy reviews plucked from the completing shit games quickly thread:
Not a Hero - PS4
Dragged my heels a bit with this one, had it installed for ages. It takes all the joy of Hotline Miami and crams it into a side scrolling platform shooter. I should type more about this really, but I've got the brandy out this evening and I'm struggling. The cover, slide, merk-a-man mechanic is perfect, the voicework is sublime (loved it) and each character appears to be genuinely worth learning. Fantastic game, definitely going in my next top 100 update. Devolver rapidly moving up the ranks on the publisher to watch list. [9]
Mother Russia Bleeds - PS4
Throwback scrolling beat 'em up that gradually reveals itself to be a top effort. There's a nice rhythm to it once you get your dash/grab game sorted, plus it has one or two extra abilities that work quite well. It's typical Devolver; pixel faces are mashed into gaping pulpy holes, eyeballs pop out, multiple latex gimps frequent the of-course-they-did fetish club level and one of the characters shits in his hand to throw turds at enemies if you press R3. It all works in a brutally OTT *MEANWHILE IN RUSSIA, LOL* kind of way though. Graphics are appealing, sound is fine (tunes were doing their thing, but weren't memorable), bosses aren't bad and the checkpoints are mercifully placed. It's perfectly serviceable solo and great fun with 4 players. For the £3 I paid, which is roughly how much it always seems to cost as it appears in almost every PSN sale, I'm gonna go with a generous [8]. Better than the vast majority of the Final Fight clones that inspired it - also plays a better than Castle Crashers and other recent efforts - but it's no SOR2.
Thinking to the games from them I’ve played in the past...there’s probably quite a few. But the obvious highlight was Hotline Miami on the Vita, headphones on.
Made my top ten for the decade. The sequel isn't the waste of time its reputation suggests either. It's still good but there's enough of a drop in quality to give it the Monkey Ball 2 'just a bit off' feeling. There's a solid case for leaving it alone and sticking with the perfect memories, but for anyone craving more of the same there's enough about it to scratch an itch...
Played through the first two albums and had a great time. I'd watched videos before and it never really came through how the visuals and sound work together with the action. The rhythm when you play it is excellent, especially those moments of panic when you find yourself desperately chucking people about.
Well worth the six quid something it is currently.
Yeah, I've had my eye on it for a while. But I knew it was short and got to a point where I thought I may as well wait for a decent sale. And here we go.
The arcade mode is a good addition. It really feels like a classic arcade game in the way it plays.
for some reason i was convinced that I'd seen ape out listed for game pass so spent ages searching the store for it last night...checked this morning and it seems it's not even on xbox!
