I really should play that past the first hour

  • I really should play it.
  • I really need to give RDR2 another chance.
I need to spend enough time with it to map the controls to my brain, or maybe even print a crib sheet.
  • The controls are simple. Every button you press will cause yer man to punch his horse.

  • And then have a bounty put on you.

    Nailed it.
  • I predict that when traffic lights change to indicate no crossing pedestrians will hasten pace and continue to cross the road so long as they can catch up with other pedestrians who crossed when the lights indicated they should.

Doing the silly half run half walk.
    I like it.
  • ...and if you want to walk, you have to use a combination of holding down both joysticks to activate your legs, then constantly click both shoulder buttons to make your feet move. This only gets tricky when you want to actually turn your character, because that's on the D-pad.

  • It will utilise the new PS5 rear screen buttons to have realtime hair combing physics.

They've been developing a revolutionary new physics engine to render it.

  • Will it run on Series X in the first 2 years though?
  • Has it really been nearly seven years since 5 came out? Fucking hell.

That's only for first party games innit?
  • Yeah, I'm being a dickhead.
    Welcome back to the party!

Right? If I change cars, doesn't that give the filth a moment's pause for thought?
  • Hopefully they pay their taxes this time.

Let's hope this has already been written being as Dan Houser has just left R*

  • I was half-joking. I think I said on the page before that my main beef with these is the same old mission structure they've been carrying around for decades. I don't want to blanket write-off everything since Vice City but that was the last time I played one that didn't take itself too seriously. That's a lot of games and writing to dismiss though and there's been quite a bit of good stuff since then probably. Gay Tony was decent. I liked a lot of parts of 5.
  • My first thought on hearing about Houser was 'does that mean this'll be better written then?'

More than anything they make far too much of the writing, so it gets in the way of actually doing anything interesting in the missions. And it's bad.

I kinda went the other way and thought they used the writing as a beard for bad missions, but then it takes something pretty revolutionary to shake up mission structure in games. I mean between escort, rampage, treasure hunt, flag capture, and stealth there aren't many other kinds of activities you can do, at least that folk have really deeply explored

  • It's not the actual missions once you get into them. It's the drive somewhere to start a bit where you then drive somewhere. Then when you've done something there, drive back. You can cut that driving out completely. Just cutscene straight into the good stuff. They could also do more with having the open-world feed into the story. They've had some stuff with gang wars and so on but they just stay contained in the open-world bit. Have the story evolve depending on what you've been doing outside of the missions. I dunno. There isn't some silver bullet, it's partly the genre that they created. And a lot of people know and like how these play and I'd guess don't want it messed around with too much.

Despite playing every bit of GTA SP content they've put out, I've really struggled to get into them since San Andreas. Too much uninvolving, low-quality story-telling laid over the same old game. The worlds are amazing. But they need to find a way to create your own stories a bit more effectively. More emergent stuff.

I've not played a lot of GTA online, but I think emergent is something that happened well with Red Dead Online, that ability to create your own narrative over whatever was happening. I don't know the current state of generated missions, but I found the "radiant" quests in Skyrim to be a bit sterile, and made that world feel a lot emptier than Oblivion where I would often find half stories that needed you to finish them off with a collectathon or a few kills. Defnitely agree that the world building is essential to add substabce to whatever is laid over it in terms of tasks and achevements
