Do Boardgames Dream of Miniature Porn?
  • Thanks for the recommends guys. I'll give them a look in.

  • Betrayal at House on the Hill looks really cool for Halloween, building a haunted mansion tile by tile, then at a certain point it all kicks off, one of 50 story scenario's is triggered, and 1 player becomes a traitor. There are story books for each side and it gives different win conditions for the traitor and the good guys.

Last Night on Earth also looks good, Will wheaton featured it in his latest episode of TableTop on Geek & Sundry.

I'm all for ios talk also, they are pretty much all I play on my iPad, slowly losing interest in action video games of any sort.

Anyone playing Summoner Wars ios? I absolutely love it, been playing a few randoms online which is much more satisfying than against the AI.

  • Anyone else got the Game of Thrones...game? It's fucking excellent. I'll write something proper tonight about it but for now: It's like Diplomacy on steroids, soaked in awesome lore and probably the most engaging, complex and rewarding boardgame I've ever played. Boom.
  • City of Horror
Sounds amazing. I imagine there's absolute carnage during a game of this with everyone hating everyone else.

Damn it! That does sound amazing. Might have to give that a look

  • I bought the iOS versions of Tigris & Euphrates, Qin, Alien Frontier and Caylus last night. Will try and dip into them later.

If you're looking for some other board game iOS recommendations, here are a few well worth checking out: Elder Sign, Le Harve, Forbidden Island, Puerto Rico, Ticket To Ride and Carcassonne.
  • I bought risk on windows phone because it came out just this week.
  • Qin is a neat little tile building game. Fast-paced and I'm getting my ass kicked even on a two-player easy game. Well worth a look.
  • Just saw that Stanto tweeted this;

    Looks rather nice.

  • Spent three splendid hours with Mage Knight this afternoon. It was my third time playing the walkthrough solo scenario but I was a bit more adventurous this time. Gatecrashed a werewolf and an Orc Summoner who were enjoying a couple of gin cocktails in the middle of an ancient ruins. Epic battle ensued and thanks to my new-found skills and mindless followers, I defeated the blighters - despite the summoner's best attempts to confuse me by summoning another werewolf - and made off into the bright sunlight clutching a shiny artifact for my troubles.

Also plundered a dungeon, tried to burn down a monastery and threatened a village with my huge sword. Utterly brilliant.

What I love most is the selection of actions open to the player at every turn. The sheer range of options can be overwhelming at first, but once you settle into the groove, things just fall into place. I was sitting for 10 minutes looking at the board, unsure if I should really attack a mage tower - but the thought of loot and power urged me onwards. Make no mistake, Mage Knight is a quite brilliant game. If you're sitting on the fence or put off my the price, my advice would be to go for it. Yes, there's a lot to learn, but it's so beautifully put together that this learning process is fun.

    Amazing.

Five posts up mate. And yeah it looks fantastic fun, it's just a shame I have no friends that would bloody play it.
  • FFS. Damn kilted and shinji. It's 12.15 and I am looking online for Mage Knight prices and stock. I didn't realise it could be played solo.

  • So that's city of horrors bought. Pointed a couple of friends to the rps review and they're actually keen to try it. Will report back once its played.

should be interesting as we already fall out and call each other cunts over loot in blands coop.
  • Added Smash Up to my collection today. It was a toss up between that and King of Tokyo and the idea of robot wizards was too much to pass up.

Also, found a lovely new game store in the fine city of Galway. Dungeons and Donuts, does exactly what it says. Play some D&D, eat some donuts. Good donuts too, a little pricey but that's fine. Have Pandemic on order as a tester, hoping it'll work out. Damn fine donuts

  • Big big big thumbs up for Smash Up. Was playing with the family tonight and it took a little while to get flowing but once it did the combos and backstabbing went up a notch.

At the start of the game you pick 2 of 8 decks to "smash up". Pretty generic nerdy stuff, zombies, pirates, wizards, robots etc. The nice thing is that each of the decks play really differently. For example the robots bent is to be able to fire out cheap, low value minions at a high rate; zombies can reuse discarded minions easily; ninjas can sneak in before points are divided up.

Really easy to learn, fairly cheap and will be gagging for expansions. Definite recommend

  • Well, thanks to Shinji and Kilted, Mage Knight just turned up.

I told the missus she can buy it as my xmas present this year, lessened the guilt somewhat.

  • Shinji, have you tried Smash Up with 2 players yet? It has been on my radar since it was announced but got the impression it is more a game for 3-4 players. I do a lot more gaming with 2 players, so tend to focus my spending on games that are best with 2 but scale up.

Speaking of which, my latest order from Games Lore arrived today, Ticket to Ride: Nordic Countries, for a bit of snowy, festive cheer, and Shadows Over Camelot: The Card Game, which seems to have a nice mix of memory and a traitor element.

  • I hear ticket to ride Nordic is the one to get for two players.

Bought (well my girlfriend) got dominion seaside omg pirate ship is bloody amazing!
Also bought string railway which should be a bit of fun. Was tempted by smash up but I too have doubts about its two player credentials (based on the dice tower review).

Dude if you want to get a two player game get starwars x wing. Play on a small grid (2ft by 2ft) and have a laugh!
  • Yeah I think TtR Nordic has lots of single track routes and more scope for blocking the other player, which is a big part of the fun for me.

I am slowly converting Mrs Surveyor to sci-fi themes but X Wing may be a stretch at the mo, it does look very cool indeed though. Do you have to paint the minatures yourself?
Live & PSN (Vita only) - MattTheSurveyor
  • Nah they're pre painted which is part of the attraction for me. Its basically like playing with toys with a lot of dice rolls.

I haven't played with two yet, but I reckon it might be a little tame with 2 people. Most of the fun I've had is ganging up on the leader and seeking revenge on the player that stopped me scoring points. That's taken out of it if it's just two people.

  • Any shouts for a good two player game, nicely portable, to take on holiday?
  • I'm going to plump for Summoner Wars! You can get the master set (6 factions for £40ish) but that has a solid playing board.
You can get packs of 2 factions for about £20 and these come with paper playing areas for easy storage and foldability.

  • +1 for Summoner Wars, we bought the Elves vs Orcs set for our holiday, decantered the paper mat, cards, dice and chits into a zip-lock bag and away we went.

We also took Battle Line, which is just a deck of cards and 9 pawns, really cool poker-like game.

Citadels is also great with 2, and comes in a very compact box.

  • In Utrecht for the weekend. Found a couple of amazing board game shops. One was particularly nice, big tables set up with games waiting to be played.

Picked up Twilight Struggle on my travels. The theme strikes me as a little dry but the BGG rating made it difficult to ignore. Got the deluxe edition which has probably the highest quality board I've seen.

If you're ever in Utrecht give The Joker and Labyrinth a look.

  • This week in board games:

Smash Up continues to be a massive success around family evening times. Many games were had, people were ganged up on, victories were snatched and alliances shattered. There was even one glorious moment where one player (sister) intentionally scored a base, giving victory to another (dad) preventing someone else (me) from winning due to a previous offence. It was deliciously petty.

Twilight Struggle is clearly an excellent game but a tough sell for some. I guess it seems a little long and possibly a little dry. I haven't gotten enough experience yet to provide compelling anecdotes to play but I reckon it'll have good staying power.

Have 4 players lined up for a Pandemic (if it arrives) / Mage Knight fest next saturday. Not sure anyone knows what they're in for but I'm excited

  • Another Saturday another board gaming session.

This was the big one. Mage Knight, Full Conquest scenario. The goal, to conquer any cities that were encounter. The best part of 5 hours later, goal accomplished.

You guys...this game.....is just, the business. It is my GOTY, video games could learn a lot from this. It manages to squeeze the best parts of a game like Skyrim down from 100+ hours to 4+ hours. The scope for customisation is so much greater than I ever could have imagined from a board game.

Anyway, I can't do it justice. If you can get 4 people around a table this Christmas, be good to yourself and go for it.

You boardgamers, would this be of interest to a non-boardgamer?

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2229165/

I like geeky shit regardless of context, does the subject sound interesting as I know eff all about it.
  • Possibly? I've never seen it, but Spiel De Jahres is probably the biggest award a game can win, and it kinda stoked the fires of the ever popular 'Euro-game' style of board game.

I shall grab it and see then. I loved the Tetris doc despite not playing it since I was five.
