Do Boardgames Dream of Miniature Porn?
  • My partner and I played a couple of games of Star Wars risk this weekend. Really good fun for both of us (she doesn't even like starwars).

Will do mate, although my review is unlikely to be as eloquent as yours are.

Is this because of the deal with FFG expiring and they've realised they could make shed loads?

  • I still miss the rank and file though...
  • some units aren't still rank and file I think
  • I mean square bases and solid units. Don't like them going all 40k.

    Some of those deals though...
  • Yes that's what I meant too. There are a few regiments

Edit: actually might just be the old photos from Fantasy Battles. Still, nothing to stop you from keeping units in rank and file.
  • Dunno if you chaps know but if you've got lots of Space Marines , you can buy Horus Heresy -  Betrayal at Calth and Deathwatch Overkill ( if you have Genestealers or something similar) for about £10 each on ebay . You get everything bar the mini's which is a bargain

DO IT. All the cool kids are.

Well, they're not, they're off having sex and such. But you should play Warhammer anyway.

Considering getting some dystopian wars though as the game looks class

  • A lot of the big army boxes aren't a great deal, that's £401 worth of figures for £400 if I've done my maths right...

Whereas the Malignants Start Set, which is essentially the beginner pack for that, is £50 for £73.50 worth of minis.

Which scale, though? Cos there's Dytopian Wars (1:1200) and Dystopian Legions (32mm).

It's one of many systems that I've almost fallen prey to. I was tempted by Covenant of Antarctica or Empire of the Blazing Sun. (Basically because the latter's vehicles look like something out of Advance Wars.)

Talking of tabletop wargaming and 40K, etc., I'm getting a bit worried that GW are going to 'pull an Age of Sigmar' with 40K, as they did with Fantasy Battle. The fluff has always been "the end of the world is about to happen", but GW have recently put out a Magnus the Red model (the first time there's been a Primarch in 40K), with an associated campaign detailing the Thousand Sons invasion of Fenris, and now there's a teaser trailer for the Fall of Cadia.

If GW decide to kill off 40K and do "41K", I'm not sure I'll be very happy.

  • I'm in two minds.

40K has been stalled for ages. The Eldar keep stopping bad shit from happening across the galaxy for as long as I've been into the hobby. My endless chittering spawn, the Tyranids, have been turned from THE GREAT DEVOURER to the WEE NIBBLER - Chaos has been... rather unchaotic. I don't know if

I wouldn't want to see them go AoS with 40k, but they need to inject something new in. The video suggested under Fall of Cadia was the Year in Review, and it just shows how much diverse and great shit GW put out... it's like watching a brand new company emerge from the ashes of one that I fell out of love with. I'd hazard a guess at 40k getting more narrative based for the next year or two, and if they do a big reset, or a push to 41k, it will be similar to AoS, but without the farcical rules at the start. It'll be something akin to the Warp exploding thus allowing you to field more varied armies, there'll probably be some temporal fuckery and so on so that 40k stuff can mix with 41k stuff without any issues.

They're realising the power of their Lore again, and bringing back legendary models that you can actually field is... well it's what people want? I hope they'll continue to be as dexterous as they have this last year, because at the minute 40K seems to have veered towards the unnatainable from a bystanders eyes whereas Sigmar, as much as it pisses of the 1% of fans that reside on /tg/ and the forums, is immediately recognisable as a way into the hobby for people who lived through the prime period of the 90s.

They really need to slash and burn a lot of dreck, whilst keeping the influx fresh. They're actually listening to the community now, and I do wonder if Fantasy Battles will return in a more polished form, based on the AoS system.

    ---

As for my own forays into Sigmar... well the GF wants to get on the bone train, and collect Undead. So I am torn between the three S's - Seraphon, Sylvaneth and Skaven.
  • Also look at the quality of the sculpts coming out. Fucking hell.

I just gulped at the thought of painting that.
  • Watched a video the other day that analysed it all pretty well. Fantasy only represented, like, 17% of their revenue or something and the entry level was insane (buy the rule book, an army book, and a ton of minis to even play a small game). Hence the reboot.
  • 40k brand is way too big to change to 41k, surely.
  • There are some truly stunning minis out there nowadays, jesus.
  • It makes a lot of sense. The buy in now is dirt cheap comparatively. £50 for the starter sets and you can be playing within a few hours, and you can even have a bloody dragon or something.

I started pricing up the rough equivalents from the Dawn Spire set - the High Elves don't exist properly in AoS yet, so they're reusing old an Blood Coast set of models or something. Even then, I got to about £200 before the units stopped matching, and the box is FIFTY POUNDS. It's like a quarter price - if you assume parity between the forces, it's maybe something like £300 worth of figures for £50 - absolutely insane.

I'm not sure, either. While it's cool to have a Primarch in 40K, it was nice having some areas of mystery. For example, they recently did a book on the 13th Company of the Space Wolves, and it kinda ruined it. It's like the two 'missing' Space Marine legions, it'd be cool to get some sort of explanation as to what they did to piss the Emperor off, but would that be cooler than the mystery? I dunno. If Abaddon unites the Chaos Legions and starts the final Black Crusade, that's an awesome campaign to play, but it takes something away from the universe - every army in the game is presented as a possible galaxy saver/destroyer, so is the 13th Black Crusade cooler than the possibility of mass Tyranid invasion/mass Necron awakening/Uruk Thraka's Grand Waaagh/Eldar resurgence, etc.?

And if those are your choices, Skaven. Always Skaven.

Yeah, the rumour mill before hand was that 80% of the stuff they sell is Space Marine related, 10% was other 40K, and the remaining 10% was the entirety of Fantasy. Explains why we never got a new Bretonnians book. It's a shame, really, because they went all out with the final edition of Fantasy, the rulebook was a fabulous thing.

They're just pissed off trees. Incredible.
