Do Boardgames Dream of Miniature Porn?
  • Given the choice I will roll up in whatever can get away with being painted pink because it annoys the piss out of the bearded norwegian death metal types and their fucking space wolves/dwarves/khorne/black orcs/dark elves/using a fucking daemon army so you can play 40k and fantasy with the same miniatures you fucking cunt.

Hi Tyranids from back in the day.

I think you'll find nerds are perfectly happy with suggestive themes*. ;) It's GW/Citadel that have been moving away from Slaanesh being genuinely a bit disturbing, in order to court the family friendly market.

    A loaf of clothes? Awesome.

We expect plenty photos when painted up.

It's been fucking ages since i've done this so it's scrappy. Need to work on my paint loading because i'm not as liberal as the gw guys. For the rest of the warriors I might do shield on as the things are massive and cover lots of the model, but equally that might make boys harder to reach, My next purchase is going to be a lamp as painting improved rapidly when I stood next to the standing light. Any recommendations?

    Good stuff.

Just get a daylight lamp, they're pretty cheap. No need to go mega expensive. You out can get one with a magnifier on for about 20 squids at Hobbycraft.

  • Cheers swirl! Ropey as fuck after being so out of practice, but the plan is to use one guy as the template and then batch paint the rest. Also need to get some technical paints for the metal areas, that oxide one seems perfect for nurgle. Will probably get some more of others too. Gf's Skink looks amazing with just a flat colour and a wash but she wants them brighter so needs more too. I think we're in deep lads.

Looks good Tempo. Are you getting paints from GW? Might be worth checking independent stockists, the Toymaster near us do them much cheaper.

I taught Armada to my bro in law yesterday while we were round for the day/night He loved it, but it took some explaining. I was exhausted by the end. Love this game.

    4oEm3F9.jpg

Then played some Karuba, Snow Tails and Camel Up with da girlies. Great day.

  • Had a scope around town breifly and the only place that sells them that I could find doesn't really undercut GW by much. I am happy to start of the core with GW paints and move to other cheaper sources when I need a greater variety. The good thing about GW is that their new painting system makes it a lot easier to figure out your bases and layers, so it's kind of like a 101 course. I am going to layer my warrior and highlight him later, and to do the latter I was thinking about a 50/50 mix of nurgle green and yellow, so that I can get by without buying a superfluous highlight paint.

Really gotta hand it to GW for getting their act together of the last 2 years. Even if they are still a little pricey, they more than make up for it with how easy it is to get into now, and how incredibly useful their youtube painting tutorials are.
  • Here we go! A complete Chaos Warrior for my Nurgle Warband! He's my template model...

Which was like the dry run for the rest of the unit, hopefully they should take less time if done in batches.

Similarly, here is the girlfriend's Skink - "Jar Jar Skinks"... I don't know either.

    Absolutely lovely! Top work.
  • Looking forward to getting some technicals on there
  • Hey. They are pretty damn good temps, especially if you haven't done it for a while!
Get some silver and dry brush scratches on the edges of the armour and shield to give it more pizazz?
Or another cheap trick - get a teensy bit of torn sponge and dip it into a tiny bit of paint and add wear, or tarnish, chips or even blood to the armour pages? Do it sparingly tho.

I've been painting up a star wars Speeder bike. Not game related but i might post it tomorrow if i can get some daylight shots.

  • I'm currently trying to play mahjong with my in-laws.
I've played some complicated boardgames but....

  • Waiting on a dry brush and some silver for that, but it's the plan. Can't take credit for the skink, that's all the girlfriends work and given how tiny they are I think she did a damn fine job, especially as it's the first mini she has ever painted.
  • Dry brush works better with a stiff brush BUT you can use it with any brush.
You could do some scuffing or abrasion marks with another colour.

  • I painted a lot of it while it was still on the sprues. So i made a schoolboy error and didn't paint the inside of one of the pieces so it's the plastic colour from a certain angle. I also couldn't get the offending piece back off the model when i put it together and discovered the cock up.
These bandai kits are incredible tho, cheap and unbelievably precise, they snap together as well, no glue needed at all.

  • Man you have the metal technique absolutely on point, that's incredible! How long did that take you?

I had to throw away a brush already this morning, because in our low light modelling area we'd managed to dip it too far without realising and paint had got under the ferrule, basically making it impossible to use. Any tips for brush handling?
  • Hhmmm brushes. Get yourself a cheap palette like this Plastic-Painting-Palette-Palette-Painting.jpg , it's hard to get too much paint on the brush then.
Don't overfill your brush washing cup thingy either. You don't actually need much water to clean the brush and if you let it sit in deep water for a long time the wood splits.
I don't let them sit anymore actually, dip and clean, take it out and let it sit on a paper towel while you are using another one and in most cases the bristles will be dry when you need to use the brush again.

I'm cheating now, i used an airbrush for that speeder, three blended colours for the main body and a single dark colour for the engines, then a gloss varnish to be able to adda wash to panel lines and details, lastly a bit of dry brushing using a GW dry silver and then ultimately lots and lots of coats of matt varnish to take the gloss away. The matt is what took the most time!
The whole thing was painted up and snapped together in about 5hrs, but then the matting was a problem, the airbrush matt didn't seem to do anything so i brushed on a different varnish, that took forever to dry (1 day), i didn't get the result i wanted so i went back to the airbrush varnish and that had finally got it near enough what i wanted.

  • Yeah we have a pallet, I just think we're a bit shite with it. Time will improve stuff, and the brushes are cheaper than my lunch at work which is solved by not buying lunch at work and making it at home. I'd love to give Airbrushing a go in a year or so, but it seems very model-specific. The blending you get on the speeder really proves where its strengths are.
  • Handy hint for those cheapo palettes as well:
Wrap it in tin foil, pushing it into the cups, and you just throw the foil away when finished, no need to wash it.
    Live= sgt pantyfire    PSN= pantyfire
  • Airbrushes are ridiculously cheap now (China), i got a bundle deal of 2 brushes and a compressor with air tank (so you have a reservoir and the brush gets an even flow of air) for £80.
You can get a brush alone for circa £15 and a desktop compressor for about the same.
Not the best brushes in the world but they do the job.
But yeh you are right they are a bit niche so if you don't do much painting then...
