I picked up New Angeles alongside a few others for Christmas and it's got some plastic miniatures that I'd like to get painted.  I've never painted anything so have no supplies.  Is there a beginner's guide or something that a kind soul has put together?

They're a lurid orange plastic for some reason so I'll need a spraypaint basecoat and whatever colours to actually paint, I assume?  So that's paints, brushes, palette, but is there anything else I'll need?  Is there a decent starter pack anywhere or do I just buy a load of individual pieces?

    These are the miniatures.

    Games Workshop do various bundles.

I've not used, but heard good things about (most of these also do bundles by theme):
    Privateer Press' Formula P3.
    Vallejo.
    Battlefront's Colours of War.
    MiG's Ammo.
    The Army Painter.
    Tamiya.

Also available (but I've never used them or know anyone that has):
    Dark Star Miniatures' Reaper Paints.

As for brushes, a lot of these same places will do sets of various sizes. At the moment I'm using a set from Revell.

You'll also want something to undercoat the miniatures. Try Tamiya Matt Black, GW Chaos Black, or Army Painter Matt Black spray paint. (I've used all three of these before and they work well.)

If this is the only thing you'll paint then just get cheapish brushes. Otherwise get some Kolinsky Sable ones. They've made a huge difference for me.

As for tutorials, try the following YouTube channels. A lot of companies above will also have painting guide books that you'll probably be able to appropriate for New Angeles.

    That Teri Girl.
    Girl Painting.
    Hobby Hot Tips.
    Beasts of War.
    Warhammer TV.

Nice one, folks. Thank you very much!

  • This guy's tutorials are pretty good. This one is kind of close to what you are doing as well.

  • One thing he doesn't mention is to wash the figures first, just in a bit of soapy water. Out gets rid of any graze from the moulding process, the paint or primer can bubble and break up if there's grease on the plastic.
    YOU MUST PRIME YOUR FIGURES.

  • Played a couple of good games over the Christmas holidays, especially New Years Eve. Firstly, One Night Ultimate Werewolf is one of the most frequently hilarious games I have played and has become a firm, warm up favourite. Lots of bluffing, discussion and accusations...great stuff.

Patchwork is a lovely 2 player game that seems very simple but has a surprising range of things to consider and keep track of. Really enjoyed.

Mythos was also good fun. It is essentially Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective mixed with Lovecraft. We did the first case on New Years Eve and it was good but seemed way too simple. It felt like a tutorial rather than a proper case and we correctly answered all 12 questions within an hour...yet it was still fun and has a lot of potential.

Yet the real star of the recent play time was Letters from Whitechapel. I have been desperate to play this ever since I got into board gaming and holy shit it did not disappoint. Insanely tense, frequently exciting and satisfying. The way the mechanics all work so extremely well and the exceptional theming lead to an excellent experience.

I've found figures are okay, usually. It's large vehicle kits I tend to wash. Inch or so of warm water in the sink with a bit of dish soap, jiggle the sprue around, rinse, leave to dry over night.

  • They look great.
    The capes and shield especially.
Are you going to do more figures?

  • The plan is to finish off this batch of warriors and then move onto my Lord of Plagues when the flesh paint arrives. After that, more nurgle stuff, but of the daemon persuasion
  • The talent on display here from Tempy is sickeningly great stuff. Haven't painted anything in years myself.

  • Letters from whitechapel is outstanding Aaron. I love that game.

Had an incredible game of Star Wars Rebellion earlier this evening. Was so, so close at the end after a very hairy rebel base relocation mid way through.

I was Imperials and had spread my search parties out pretty well. I'd been focussing on Intel rather than research and diplomacy, something I hadn't tried before. I don't think I'd go as far next time I play, but the lack of unit production and Super Star Destroyers was replaced by me tearing through the probe deck so fast I could see the fear in my mates eyes.

Game ended by me having a pretty good idea where the base was and moving my Death Star into orbit....and blowing the planet to smithereens. So satisfying when he fessed up that the base was there. One or two more rounds and the rebels would have won.

Love it. Played about 6 games of this now and every time has ended differently. You need to play with someone that knows the cards to get the most out of it though.
  • Recently I wished there were games which focussed on a mechanic from complex games and shined that to all hell rather than as part of a breadthier game.

Like in rebellion the whole hide and seek sounds good and interesting but it's tagged to a few other mechanisms too. Similarly captain sonar has that listening out mechanic and path the path but conjoined to a six player game.
  • New paints arrived so I spent all night (read, all fucking night) painting my Lord of Plagues, and finishing up my painted Warriors as well as basing them. 3 more to go! Good times!

Heard great things about Captain Sonar. I'm pretty sure I'd become a massive board game collector if I actually had anyone to play with - there's so many games I want to try.
  • I too could easily become a collector but for me the issue is both money and availability! Luckily, I have recently found a good small group (four of us) who regularly play together. It started with Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective but has swiftly moved to many, many other games. Most of them supplied by my friend.

However, I have still managed to gather a decent collection over the past two years:

    Guillotine
    Forbidden Island
    Coup
    Batman Love Letter
    Dead of Winter
    Welcome to the Dungeon
    One Night Ultimate Werewolf
    Patchwork
    Codenames Pictures
    Letters to Whitechapel

Of all those I would most likely reccomend Whitechapel and Dead of Winter.

    Boardgame collections...go!

Tending to sell games that aren't getting played nowadays, so my collection size isn't really changing. Mainly to keep within my allocated shelf space/avoid castration by Mrs Pea.

  • That plague thing looks disgusting well done!

Collection wise i have three deposits in different locations around the house, it doesn't seem so bad that way. I'm scared to actually bring them together or make a list.

I suspect it's about the same size as frantics wall of games.

I took advantage of illness this weekend to finally catch up with this thread (mostly scanning for interesting photos and mentions of new game titles) after having waded through the first third ages ago and then being too intimidated by the thousands of unread posts (and counting) to go back to it.

I now have a bunch of BoardGameGeek pages in my browser history for future purchase consideration, mental stop-motion imagery of Frantic's shelves filling up with boardgame boxes and a deep respect for those of you with the patience and skill to paint miniatures at frankly amazing levels of detail...

I was given Bananagrams for Christmas which was played with much relish over New Year (although we quickly added a rule of 3 letter words or longer given that one of the players knew the Scrabble 2 letter word list inside out) and I plan on taking it in to work to see if I can get some sessions going at lunchtimes, much as I did with Carcassonne early last year.

My relatively limited and random collection of games currently consists of:

    Bananagrams
Carcassonne (the 'new' edition with the river and abbot included - I'm considering expansion #1 or #2)
Dixit Odyssey (along with expansions 4 and 5; my girlfriend has original Dixit with expansions 2 and 3)
Labyrinth (the classic Ravensburger version; I'm intrigued by the Jim Henson boardgame from 2016...)
    LEGO Minotaurus
    Love Letter
    Robo Rally
Star Wars Trivial Pursuit: Classic Trilogy Collector's Edition
    Trivial Pursuit: Genus III Edition
  • Thanks FranPants, can't expect these other uncouth individuals to pay the proper respects, it's sorry state of affairs.

As for collections, I slowed down at uni because I ended up playing less rather than more. Currently have:

    Love Letter
    Avalon
    Spyfall
    Codenames
    King of Tokyo
    Sheriff of Nottingham
    Small World
    Libertalia
    Cyclades
    Cosmic Encounter
    Dead of Winter
    Space Hulk

Of those, Cosmic Encounter and Dead of Winter see the most table time.
  • @jdaniel
Fuck me yes, bananagrams and scrabble players = no fun at all.
Memorizing a list of two letter combinations isn't really a strategy to be proud of imo.
    Live= sgt pantyfire    PSN= pantyfire
  • I had a huge purge when I moved house.

I'm buying more games that can be played in a pub now.

Has anyone noticed games have gone up in price a lot? It seems like even small box card games are pushing 30 quid now and the 50+ for big box and 65-70 not ridiculously rare at all anymore.

Tell that to all the good chess players!

My partner and I played scrabble yesterday. I think we agreed it's a bit of a shit game. The points and words is a toxic combo for pace and the pointlessness in thinking before your go (for layout and availability reasons) kills it even more.
  • I think the big prices are mainly just big publishers, Welcome to the Dungeon and Samuria Spirit together are just under £30, you could grab that, Sushi Go, Codenames, Avalon, and Spyfall for shy of £100 and have a small portable collection with ease.

The spiralling costs with bigger games are definitely why places like the Dice Roll cafe are really good, I wrote about it for my uni paper actually: https://glasgowguardian.co.uk/2016/11/27/a-roll-and-dice-at-glasgows-best-board-game-cafe/
  • Codenames is surprisingly cheap. There are some cheap games still, like I got kana gawa which an absolute beaut of a production for <30 (I think, like karuba, it's a game banking on selling a LOT, there wee three or four copies in the shop which is unusual).

It's games like fog of war (the new two player one by Geoff engelstein) which are hitting 60. And clank over 50 quid. There's beyond Baker Street which is essentially hanabi+ that is in the 30+ range now too. The newest pandemics (Iberia and Cthulhu) are £47 too.
