Do Boardgames Dream of Miniature Porn?

Different head for the Terradon but that looks right.

I'll need to check I've not lost any pieces though (and I didn't bring all my Lizardmen back from my folks yet). Also have a single Kroxigor (this model, though not my actual model).

  • I have the full Krox unit and Chameleon Skinks, but I might grab the two lizards off you.

  • Cool.

I'll post pics and stuff once I've sorted through it all a bit more.
  • I think I'll have to keep Ungrim Ironfist. I got him, the Dwarf army book, and the boxed game for my tenth birthday. So much sentiment there.
  • Cross post: Armello is free trial on Steam for another 17 hours.

    It's basically a tabletop game.

Not my bag as a videogame, but seems very very well made.
I'm still great and you still love it.
  • Armello is lovely to play. Got it a while ago. Really good fun, but slow in multiplayer.

I've two interviews coming out very soon.
One with the Development manager of the Dark Souls Boardgame.
The other with the editor of the tabletop Gaming magazine.

    Both really really interesting people.

  • A couple of months ago, one of our friends came round with a copy of a game called Near and Far which she'd just picked up.  It's the sequel to "Above and Below" which I thought was an alright, if slightly fiddly game, that combined exploration and town building.

Near and Far is much better, and whilst we're yet to properly finish it, I feel like we've played enough to recommend it.  Essentially the game consists of building up parties in town to take out adventuring in the wider world.  The "in town" bit is much streamlined compared to its predecessor, whereas the exploring has massively expanded.

The biggest gimmick with the game is that it comes with two books.  The first is actually the board, so with each game you turn a page and are presented with a completely new map to explore.  The second book contains various stories/quests/scenarios that are triggered by arriving at different spaces.  Whilst they're not going to win the Man Booker prize, they are fun enough, and do a good job of gradually fleshing out backstory, both for each map, and for the adventure as a whole.

Like Above and Below, the game feels a little fiddly at first, but you find yourself forgiving it for this thanks to the narrative elements - and the longer you play, the more you learn that there's more depth to it than first appears, with a number of different strategies presenting themselves, and with different maps favouring different approaches.

We've got about half way through the campaign, and it's proven itself entertaining enough that we're regularly meeting up to have another go.  The box says it's for 2-4 players, but really, you're going to want at least 3 I would imagine (we're playing it with 4), which I guess is the only major limitation, as it requires being able to get people together on a regular basis to play.  (There is a quick-play version that uses just one map, but really, you're better off going with a full campaign...)
  • I've managed to convince a few people to come and play boardgames. Problem is after making the suggestion I've ended up with 7 people coming and I don't have any games for that many people. Any suggestions on how to run a game night, I'm thinking possible multiple games.
  • Resistance (possibly the Avalon version).

Monikers (if you can find it).

    Codenames I think plays 8.

    And maybe citadels.

Insider (by oink) and chameleon are also good variations on the "traitor" theme.

(Reading again: you probably meant as in two simultaneous games - I'd only do this if you have another expert. I think everyone will want to play with you as host).

If you want to use the tv jackbox games are also cool (if everyone has a smartphone)

3 and a 4 every time if you don't have suitable games.

    This is my thinking
  • There are now 8 people coming. Turns out there are more people wanting to play games then are willing to admit it openly.

There are quite a few games you can play with lots of people.  Crayons named a good few (Codenames definitely works with up to 8 ).  Though a lot of them tender to be find the traitor/bluffing type games.

    Others that Crayon's not mentioned...

Werewolf is the classic.  Either in its regular form, or if you want a quicker alternative "One Night Ultimate Werewolf" gives a nice 10 minute version.  (Which means you can whizz through multiple rounds and let people get used to it.)

Spyfall works best with lots of people too.  (Everyone in the group knows the theme barring one who has to essentially bluff their way through to avoid detection.)

Also Secret Hitler is fun, is for 5-10 players, and you can download the whole thing for free online.

Two Rooms and a Boom is also meant to be fun (though I've not played it).  It starts at 6 players and scales up to 30.  It's another one with a free download option.

Otherwise split them up - in which case you'll need a few quick games to entertain one team whilst they wait for the other...
  • The most fun I've had with a group has been with Bang! The Dice Game.
Especially if you have a 'character' or two in the group.
I've not played the others listed but they are all highly rated group party games.

  • So, I bought Codenames and set my room up with enough seats for 8 and space for two games. We played Codenames (great recommendation) drank and ate for a while, people drifted off and we were left with 4. Catan was played after, my first time playing, and I was one round from winning and fucked it at the final minute dumping the wrong cards. Good games and a lot of fun.
  • Codenames is great fun. I play a lot with the kids.

Got Heroquest to the table last week.
Its still bastard hard because of the dice rolls but it still manages to hold up to be a lot of fun.

  • That's some seriously impressive work. How big is that model?
  • That's a point, scale is hard to tell. He's this big:

He came with a base which I need to finish, but I need some extra bits for that.

  • Cheers, cheers! Unless I can sort out my stupid employment situation it's the last thing for a while, so I thought it'd be good to go out with a bang.
  • Amazing work as always Tempy.

If you can, try and hunt down a copy of Tokyo Highway. That game is supposed to be the shiznit and really hard to find (but they're doing a rerelease with some at sale at essen).
