Do Boardgames Dream of Miniature Porn?
  • Yeah, blame all the third parties out there that took advantage of GW doing world build by making sculpts for stuff they didn't. Now everything including images has to be copyrightable.

Are Wardancers still a thing? I loved my WFB Wood Elf army. Used to run rings round my mates Dwarves. Stupidly sold the lot to fund nights out when around 18. A Wardancer faction for Shadespire would make me happy.

    @Tempy

What did you do with the awful join line on the 3rd Stormcast mini? It goes right through a hammer detail. No idea what they were thinking when making it tbh.
  • Nice. I can never be bothered with the bases.
For join lines you are meant to be soopa anal and file them down then fill them with greenstuff or milliput.

Easily my best painting to date but nowhere near perfect. I go through phases of being on the mood to paint, sometimes not doing any for months /year. Gonna start the Skelebobs tomorrow while I'm in the mood.

I used the Undead in a few games last night, but using a deck composition I'd nicked online. It was shite, but I love the faction. I know exactly how I want to build a deck for them, so will sit and sort one tonight. Game has its hooks in.
  • Very nice looking Pea, especially the base on Oberyn. They sculpted bases for the Stormcast are so good that it makes the others looks shite though, especially the Sepulchral Guard

Aye, they're alot smaller though aren't they. What size are the Orrrrrrrrruk bases? Same as Stormcast I'd imagine?
  • Orruks are the same I think?

    New Warbands!

  • Chatting to my mate who plays this Warhammer stuff. I was surprised how drunken the tournaments are! Or maybe it's just his crew.

Sounded like a lot of fun.
  • Yeah i've heard as much, unsurprising really given it's the game of choice of beardy men.

In the US 40k has long been known as a "beer and pretzels" game, because it's generally a lot simpler and more laid back than Bolt Action, Warmachine, Infinity etc
  • My first purchases for about 5 months and for A really good price. For anyone interested in Rising Sun , you can get it for £65 from Gameslore . Really enjoyed Blood Rage and I like what I've read about Rising Sun , so was a no brainer really .

Frantic highly recommended Shadespire so got that cheap on eBay. @Frantic , you painting my minis ?

With Hunt for the Ring , I love hidden role games such as Letters from Whitechapel and Specter Ops throw in Tolkien and I'm all over it.

  • Anyway, in less incredible blindsides from otherwise wonderful people...

Elm invited me to go to play Watch the Skies with him. It's a "mega game" in that the lite version easily plays 30-40 people, with the full versions managing anywhere up to 300 (with varying degrees of success according to the even runners)

The premise is fairly simple - 8 nations (US, UK, France, Russia, India, China, Japan, Brazil) are represented by players that fulfill the roles of Head of State, Chief of Defence, Foreign Ministr and Chief of Science. You have nation based objectives to fulfill as part of the overall game (as India we need to beat Japan on tech amongst other things) and the overall world stage, plus whatever the alien's (represented by 5 people for us) game is.

There are Seven turns, that play out the same each time - a team huddle, science/foreign split off for the whole action phase whiles State/defence deal with shit not he world stage. After that, state and defence are clear to chat to anyone, make agreements, so on and so forth. The press are also an active participant - walking around getting scoops and presenting nations in the light the try and show.

It's wild, and the game is quite loose, whereas the social interactions really make up for it and really make everything tick. I ended up figuring out that the aliens that were one universal evil force that had convinced the US they were a benevolent faction fighting an evil one. My only trump card was the ability to play an assassination on the head of the US, but I was unable to convince other people that I was correct.

Elm won all the science after I bailed the UK out from PR so negative that it was set to take them out of the game, and I extorted them for their research for two turns.

Impossible to recreate and so difficult to get a ticket to, but so far beyond anything a video game can ever replicate.

  • Tempy that sounds amazing. Where was it held?
  • also everyone knows tigr is the best painter and should have been asked first.

Maybe you both could do a paint off ? A warband each?

They're all across the county it seems, with London as the focus. We played this at Edinburgh Science festival though.

Shut Up & Dit Down did a video on this years ago and I've wanted to try it ever since. We didn't get the full fat experience wth the pope and potential for extraterrestrial blarneys, but it was well
    worth the time.
  • This reminds me, I did some rats

  • Nice. Sadly mine will look like plastic.

How are the skaven? My Blood Bowl skaven tails snapped off on a couple :-(

  • Phone refreshed and lost my message, stupid thing.

Anyway Skaven are good, I think they won the last tournament.

The interesting thing about Shadespire is that then first wave was designed as a whole game, so until the last set of warbands are out we're playing with an incomplete picture - almost early access board game?
  • Yeah , true. But I managed to get it for £30 and Chaos Cards have the warbands for £13

I have all the factions now as the Sepulchral Guard are virtually unplayable out of the box.

    CURSE YOU GW

    *shakes fist *

Its probably the best skirmish game I've played. Can't get enough.

Therein lies a disadvantage of it being a full game released in bits, some people's kits are a little spread out.

That said I think the warbands are obscenely cheap when compared to something like X-wing, at least for someone who wants to paint the models - they're so far beyond any other sculpts in their price range, even at GW.
