Do Boardgames Dream of Miniature Porn?
  • @Aaroncupboard, the unlock games look cool. Which would you recommend.

Yeah I wouldn't recommend either Gloomhaven or Blackstone Fortress if he doesn't get to play long form games. We finished our base Gloomhaven campaign last year after nearly 4 years of (mostly) monthly games. Other than Eldritch, what other board games does he like, is he more an Ameritrash or Euro player, for example?
These are new terms for me. We tend to play Catan, pandemic, binding of Isaac (card game) and we've enjoyed 22b baker Street. I'm beginning to think rather then getting a really big ticket item we could put the money towards a stack of games. How about recommendations for top 4 games, maybe a strategy game, a two player game, a quick puzzle game and an adventure game. I think peas recommendation will make the cut.

If the person didn't just get a baby I'd recommend pandemic legacy if they like normal pandemic. Really nice couples game imo and bigish ticket so has gift qualities.

I think I'd struggle to buy a game for another that wasn't something fairly simple.

I’ve found that I’ve enjoyed all the ones I have done. Each box has three scenarios to complete (easy, medium and hard). I found in the first two boxes there was one scenario I didn’t particularly like but the third one (Secret Adventures I think it was called) had three absolutely excellent scenarios to play through - may be worth looking at that one? Thankfully, they are not too expensive as they are a one and done game.

  • Also, if you have enjoyed 221b Baker Street with them as a group, Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective is an outstanding game but can require longer sessions.

878 Vikings is a one of my favourite Strategy games. It's 1v1 or 2v2.

Smallworld or Smallworld of Warcraft is a simpler, but fun, strategy lite game that you could get anyone to play as the rules are like 5 mins.

Mexica is a territory control game but without fighting. Its really mean as you block people in, steal areas and the components are lovely. The board looks great when you finish.

For 2 player I'd say Mandala, Patchwork, Curious Cargo, Thunder and Lightning, 7 Wonders Duel, Targi, Limes, Trambahn, Holmes: Sherlock and Mycroft, Air Land and Sea. Plenty of themes covered there.

If your mate already likes Cthulu then Cthulu Wars Duel combines strategy and 2 player and is blooming awesome. You could go mental and get the expensive main Cthulu Wars, but I haven't played that so can't vouch for it.

Puzzle.....Nova Luna is super quick and simple but great. I love Scarabya. No idea why it didn't get more buzz (apart from the artwork, which is actually alright up close) but its a really, really great little Tetromino puzzle game. Everyone I've introduced it to has wanted several games after playing it.

Adventure. Gloomhaven JOTL or Mansions of Madness are both great fun.

Shout out to Clank or Clank Legacy as I just love to pull that game when we just want some silly fun.
  • Perfect, I've put a list together. Thanks everyone.
  • Bought daughter a Harry Potter version of Munchkin for her birthday. Jeez, it took ages to understand and get the hang of. Not the clearest of instructions and the cards can’t squeeze too many words into them to explain either.

We managed a full game eventually but I’ll have to look up more detailed instructions online to better understand some of the rules/effects etc.

Just took advantage of a local store's flash sale and picked up Vinhos Deluxe edition (been eyeing it for a while but the price always puts me off) and My City (have heard good things about it)
  • My City is phenomenal.
  • Have been lucky enough to be sent a copy of the new AoS box, Dominion, a few weeks ahead of launch, for a review.

Painting some minis (as part of review)

Those look schmick Temps, the wings on the Stormcast chick especially.
  • Both beautiful, but that Orruk is really, really nice. Flushed ears and muzzle - chef's kiss. I love how greenskin's lend themselves to that kind of contrast. You've nailed the orange as well.

Not sure how many you've got left to paint, but would you consider doing a deeper and more intense rust colour rather than verdigris on the iron? I can see you're bringing in another colour, which works, but I reckon you can get away with less of it and end up with a slightly more coherent whole.
  • I've pre-ordered Dominion and I'm putting the blame entirely on Tempy.

Any thoughts on the set, T?
  • It has a lot of minis in it, the core book is very good, the new rules are well put together. Just... don't expect it to give you an introduction to the game with a short book like those that feature in the starter boxes, it's very much a launch box designed to give you as many minis as possible for the price.
  • Check it out, more Warhammer!

  • Top fucking notch.

  • Gotta be honest, though - would have been better without the twink in the third pic. Cramping that dude’s style hard.
  • These push fit models in the Dominion set are absolute bloody witchcraft.
  • Yes that are absolutely fantastic. Which side are you building first?
  • I'm a little in awe of the models announced yesterday as well. Captain Stormcast in particular looks an absolute don, as does the sludgeraker (?) on the Orruk side.
  • Progress so far on the Dominion boxset.

  • You are a machine. All nicely painted but I just love the Orruks.

Do you have your miniatures out on display or do you put them away in boxes?

I missed this message! I have them all out on display. I just bought some Ikea Detolf cabinets to better show 'em off.

Now I am in the pocket of GW, I have miniatures coming out of my ears. Some stuff i've been working on over the last few weeks.

  • The flesh tones on that giant are fucking fantastic!
    Amazing work!
  • Yeah, brilliant work. Absolutely love checking out your painting, T. Your Slaanesh army is absolutely stunning.

Is your abundance of miniatures due to discount or do you get some free bits?
  • I'm going to spend tomorrow painting Warhammer all day in honour of our Lord Templeton.
  • Thanks folks. And yep, substantial discount now. Free stuff here and there I imagine, but I think that's mostly only very special stuff to say thanks.
