People are still calling the next gen Xbox "720"? It's still a placeholder I hope. Such a stupid name.
  • They should lose the numbers and go with an 'x' words theme. I still quite like 'Xenon' as a name for one of these things.

  • This stuff's all well and good but I'm quite easily pleased with graphics, so I'm not really fussed with 6x the power when Uncharted/Rage/Rayman Origins/God of War 3 still blow me away.  Certainly not fussed enough to happily spend what will probably end up as £299 anyway.

The main thing on my wishlist is for downloadable games to not jump up a level with the generation leap.  There's plenty of bitesize stuff for me to play on XBLA/PSN/Wiiware, and that's perfect for my tastes.  I'm currently spoilt for choice with side scrollers and quirky, 4-5 hour titles.  If that changes, and downloadable games go all low-level current gen standard then the next set of consoles can GTFO.
  • Have Sony ratified the starting of this thread?
  • I will buy new machine and I hope the graphics are super amazing until then I suppose I'll make do with what's around now.
  • Unfortunately the end of this generation is notable for the stagnation in creativity unlike other generations where some of the most creative games have arrived late on.

A new generation may or may not fix this but at least it will be pretty looking.

The Wii hasn't had a bad Indian summer with its triplet of quality JRPGs. I guess it doesn't help that this generation has been a bit longer. Also, this generation has been more Western-oriented, with shorter localisation times for games from foreign lands. Games like Okami took almost a year to be localised, so while they might have looked like late bursts of creativity, they were actually developed a bit before.

Agreed, I tend to look at the Wii as a separate entity, like the PC market. The Wii U will shake things up a bit for a year if nothing else.

It's Durango at the moment, they probably spent as much time brainstorming the codename as they have the real name.

  • The lack of creativity is a direct consequence of Western companies dominance / current Japanese creative stagnation. Their emphasis is on money making leading to more milking of existing IP. Japanese companies have traditionally shown more innovation.

This may be bollocks. I've got a sore shoulder and had some codeine so might not be thinking clearly.
  • I cannot wait for the Bradford console to come out.

I would say it is true of the big western companies when compared to the big Japanese ones. However there is a hell of a lot of creativity in the smaller western teams, mainly through the marketplace stuff.

I guess now we have these consoles with loads of computing horsepower and huge storage media, certain kinds of games aren't going to be distributed through the traditional physical disk format, just because it doesn't really make a lot of sense. You might look at games released as physical packaged media for the 360 and PS3 and say "there's not a lot of creativity there" but maybe that's just because games that make sense for that method of distribution have gravitated there whereas the kooky creative releases of previous generations are now digital downloads, portable games or smartphone apps.

Is that because there's an X missing?
I am a FREE. I am not MAN. A NUMBER.
  • I am not so sure about the "This gens graffix are fine by me" thing.
I mean, Batman AA, Skyrim, BF3 etc... All look great on my 360 but is that because I literally haven't seen them running on better hardware (YouTube etc.. Don't do them justice)?

More games should strive to look like PC Battlefield 3 on max settings, that's true.
  • I think they'll be massive improvements in the details. As good as the games mentioned look good at distance, close up (eg. BF3) there is still some crude texture work going on. BF3 on console, to me, feels like a game that couldn't wait for the next gen.

  • Theres other things to consider bar graphical quality too. Compare Dead Rising on the Wii to that of the 360, the Wii versions lack of meaningful zombie hoards somewhat ruin the game. AI too should improve, emphasis on should.

Or it could be telling people to fuck off and buy gaming PCs.
  • One of the big reasons I want a next gen is to do with transition loading. I am playing The Witcher 2 and the load times between areas is pretty quick but I am already starting to think to myself can I be arsed loading this house interior just to find more fucking string and timber inside.
My biggest fear with the next gen is graffix x100 which means more area transition loading and longer load times.

It would be, yup. Not as much as people first think, but more so than most consoles at release.
