Just given up on...

There were a few bits leading up to this boss that pissed me off as well tbh.
The lake outside the mine was a drag, the snatcher just inside, the Jack fuel escort mission. All tedious with annoying little enemies constantly hanging about.

That Matriarch was the worst thing in there though. If you can get through it then I'd say you're on to good times afterwards.

I found the freeze and grenade tag approach worked best for me. There are extra grenades around.
I'm falling apart to songs about hips and hearts...
  • Tried that earlier which gave me my best run yet but then he started the bullshit jumping around randomly which seems utterly pot luck if he gets you or not.

I might go back at some point but not for a while.
  • I haven’t got there on insane, but I’m sure I did it first time on normal. You just shoot the ice yes?
  • Yeah.
There is an element of luck in it though as far as I can tell. If he charges you in red mist before you can do anything or if he leaps around and lands on you in the latter fazes. Or Del is a dumb cunt and gets killed.

Like I say I am impatient as well and the boss is an utter chore, which obviously compiles with deaths. It even does the unforgivable sin of having an unskippable cut scene at the start every time.
  • Vampyr - It was a mistake, playing something so rough around the edges directly after playing The Last of Us, which is so polished.  Early on you have to do some private investigator stuff at a local bar, and your character is getting around in a shirt soaked in blood.  He mentions it early to himself but no one else seems to notice.  They know someone's out there killing people, and here's a strange bloke covered in blood trying to track down another fellow, and everyone helps him with his inquiries.

This runs quite badly on Xbox, has really small text, the menus seem optimised for a mouse (I really don't like it when console games make you control a cursor with an analogue stick).

Was really hoping for something along the lines of Life is Strange, in the times of Jack the Ripper; this is nothing like that at all though.  It has an awful lot of unavoidable, poor action-RPG combat which I wasn't expecting.  Early dialogue/monologue is really bad, ridiculously thick with exposition and it reminded me of this old comedy skit.

    Happy to move on.

  • Hellblade. Some boss or other. Catches fire. No obvious trigger for how he stops and if you just have to wait it out, then fuck that, way too long dodging.

Skybreak: whatever is below poor man's horizon zero dawn.

One of those suepr cheap things that ends up in fanatical bundles. Was refreshingly low key and to the point to begin with, but wow. Combat is baaaad. Oh well.
I'm still great and you still love it.

    Heh. I know that feeling.
  • I just don’t have time to switch on and sit in front of a TV/console anymore. Only play half hour to hour of StS before bed and that’s it. That’s my gaming life now.

I’m not all that sad. Had a good few decades of gaming. :)

It'll come back around I'm sure. Probably just in time for games to be projected directly onto your eyeballs with motion controls embedded into your hands.
  • Half an hour to an hour a night could easily see off 52 proper games in a year.
  • If by proper games you mean big games, adventure or action or whatever, then no. I hate playing such games on handheld in bed. Need big screen and good sound and more than hour to just immerse myself.

And there’s no way you could still fit 52 ‘proper’ games with just 30-60 minutes a night. I spent 100 hours on Sekiro so that alone would’ve been minimum 100 days of the 365.

  • All games are proper games, I was just being annoying.
  • Outer Wilds

Shame this, because I enjoyed the opening hours and liked the idea of it overall. When you're visiting all the new planets for the first couple of times, finding out how they work and what stuff might be buried there, it's great, and every death is a learning experience. But when it comes to the point of actually trying to make steady progress and get through the game, it really wore me down.

When every little mistake or rash decision often results in a restart, and when it can be quite tricky to get back to where you were, and when you're never sure when you're on site if you've found everything you can in an area, it just requires too much patience for me. I also never really got hooked in by the story.

I tried using a guide to get through it for a bit, but it became obvious that there was too much to do, and if you're not exploring for yourself there's not much point. And there's actually some pretty tricky platforming stuff involved, which I couldn't be arsed to do with the imprecise controls. So that was that.
  • It's a wonder I finished it really. Ordinarily I expect I'd agree with most of what you've written there, it's not my sort of thing at all, yet it managed to hook me quite spectacularly. I finished it in 5 days iirc, which required some pretty meaty sessions compared to my usual.
  • Candle: The Power of Flame

To be honest, I’d already given up on this earlier in the year, but I booted it up tonight, played a couple of screens, closed it, and removed it from my Switch. I love the colouring pencil aesthetic, the narration is decent, and I generally like the world it’s in, but the gameplay is aggressively frustrating. It’s the sort of platformer that requires fast, precise platforming, then doesn’t give you the controls or character movement to achieve it. It also contains the kind of puzzle logic that only ever makes sense after the fact; you’ll try every item on every bit of interactive scenery until something works.
  • Greedfall

RPG in the vein of late 2000's Bioware set in a colonial setting with monsters and magic.  It's very rough around the edges with bad combat and haven't met any characters I want to spend any time with.  Standard side quests to go with a main story that didn't seem very interesting.  Your character has a strange hairy growth on their face that looks like you have 1 giant Elvis sideburn even if you are playing as a lady.

Just on that this isn't that important but annoyed me - a lot of RPG's don't like to start you off with a character creation screen and make you do a little introduction section first, presumably to throw you straight into the action.  I don't like this at the best of times as it's usually a bit silly and your character's face is hidden like you're roleplaying Wilson from Home Improvement or some shit.  Also I love making a character, and restarting the game a few times til I get it just how I want it, and having to do an intro each time is tedious.  Anyway, in Greedfall's case, the intro is your character is getting their portrait painted.  Fine.  It is short and your character is off screen.  But then they speak, in a bloke's voice.  I picked a lady, then next minute she was talking like a lady.  Why have that initial man voice to begin with!  Just didn't need to be there.

  • Monkey King: Master of Clouds - Switch

There is absolutely no way I'd ever be able to finish this.  Played for 20 mins and managed to reach the first boss twice, but look: one hit kills, death resets upgrades, one checkpoint per stage and no save states and a continue system that boots you back to the start of a level = unpossible for me.  I'm crap at the genre anyway so I've bitten off more than I can chew for sure.  Will try co-op with retroking at some point, as I've read that you respawn within ten seconds if the other player stays alive, but it's not happening solo.

From a review I found online (from a shmupper who also failed to see the second stage):

It’s just a shame that they still try so hard to decimate you, and when I have more difficulty with this game than beating the first stage of Last Resort on max difficulty, then something’s not right.
  • Probably time to admit that I’ve given up on borderlands 3. There’s just too many shit boss battles .. and they shouldn’t be so hard when your playing alone on easy.

This particular one doesn’t spawn much ammo and there’s no vending machines near the restart point and I can’t even be bothered to watch another video with tips it’s such a shame as I love the rest of the game.
I like to think I'm a CAN DO kind of guy...
And the number of cans I can normally do is 12.
  • I always think its a shame there isnt a bypass for boss battles when situations like this arise. All that time and effort and money spent on the game development and subsequent levels which a person wont see because they hit a difficult boss.

Also hate lack of spawn points near a boss thats just shit design.

Which boss? They're all a piece of piss if you spend just a short time getting some better weapons, which is essentially the core crux of the game.
  • I’m not finding any good weapons which is a shame the balance of finding things is all wrong too which is another complaint- I’m away too Lapland but I’ll have a look on

All bosses have a legendary pool and are farmable. They will also drop fantastic purples.
  • What does that mean? I go back to
The last boss before do that again and get something more powerful to do this boss?

Every single boss has a percentage chance to drop a unique legendary weapon. If you farm them, they will drop.it, or another legendary, eventually. Bosses have better loot pools too.

Untitled Goose Game. The fact that they couldn’t even come up with an actual title speaks volumes. Nowhere as clever or funny as it thinks it is, in fact became quite annoying relatively early on. Overpriced bollocks. Honk off.

I’d argue I was too clever for that game, which is saying something.
