No languages or anything particularly specialised. I'm pretty much happy to do anything, beggers can't be choosers and all that, I pick stuff up quickly so that's no problem. Although I think I'd probably do best in something like a social media manager role or customer service as that's where I've had most experience.
  • Is it work, or just income that you're looking for? If income I can offer some suggestions.

I've earned £175 from Swagbucks since February. You watch videos, fill in surveys and stuff. There's a number of different gift cards, but I go with the Paypal ones as I want cash monies. Here's some info on it from MoneySavingExpert that includes a £10 bonus.

I've not done too much on Microworkers, but it's basically short tasks that people will pay small amounts of money for. There seems to be quite a few different types of tasks, I've mostly just done the Google search ones as it's something I can do at work. It's a bit like Amazon Mechanical Turk, but that took like 3 months for them to verify me and this was instant.
  • Copywriting is reasonably flexible.

Good luck with the Big Issue, Pop.  I'm clearly getting mixed up because I thought you missed out on that a few weeks back.

Their original dates for interviews passed by and I hadn’t heard anything, so I assumed I’d not even scored an interview. Turns out they were just running late with an office refurb and waiting for it to be finished before calling anyone in.

Think it went okay this afternoon. Gut feeling is they’re concerned by me not coming from within the publishing industry but at the same time quite excited that someone of my professional standing would move into their field. So 50/50 really. I’ll wait and see.

Dante - Any money will do at this point! Will have a gander through those sites, thank you.

Will also have a look into copywriting work although without any experience I'm not sure anyone would be willing to take me on.
  • There is money in white knight hacking/ exploit hunting.
It is quick to pick up but from what I can gather people either find it easy or totally impossible.

I'll PM you some info about Swagbucks then.

As for copywriting, I've been meaning to look into a site called Evolance, which might be worth looking at.
  • I know people who make extra cash copywriting through PeoplePerHour … but it’s not big money.
  • Might be better for copy or graphics than 3D but I have found peopleperhour, elance etc to be a waste of time.
People want something for nothing. Or they want you to fix the thing they went cheap on for nothing again.

White knight what now? You'll have to explain, I'm not down with the kids no mo'.
  • Haha, I learnt about it off my interns.

Companies challenge people to find hacks or exploits in their webcoding, you get paid per exploit found and by severity.
You don't really need to know much code you just need to know how to setup some free tools and report results. I started an 8 hour course on it which looked promising but too much was going over my head, my brain just doesn't work the right way for it.

I found it to be a waste of time to be honest, too many jokers wanting the moon on a stick, but ymmv. Though that was last year, perhaps it's improved since.

This has been my experience of these things also.
  • Nah, I think you’re right Dante. I’d stay away myself.
  • I have literally seen people offering £5 for 3D renders of products.
By the time I have written the pitch I would be down.

£20 for a 30 second animation. Would cost more in electric to render it.

Aye, I've never had any luck with it.

The problem with home-based email jobs is that they'd attract thousands of applicants if they were advertised, so it's much easier to advertise internally for someone who's already proven. I'd love one of those jobs myself.

There is money in white knight hacking/ exploit hunting. It is quick to pick up...

I only know one person who does it, but his Python knowledge is extensive. He's an expert in Wi-Fi security, and it takes months to learn about deep-packet inspection and routing. Plus, pen-testers have to advance their skills all the time, as everyday security improves and renders their older techniques impotent.

That said, there are still a lot of lazy admins with holes in their servers.
  • I tried a site called upwork a while back for proof reading and copywriting jobs. Despite having experience and offering low rates, I got no interest.

Also sent out CVs to a load of publishers at the time, offering freelance proofreading, and have recently had my first hit. Should get the book to read next week. Hopefully not just a one off.

  • Yeah avoid getting involved politics mate. Just wait until you get home and tell us about it.
  • Had my meeting/disciplinary that wasn't even one today about that late opening last week. Just a telling off. Wooo! Also found out that I'm doing really well so far and I'm liked and I'm not mental or the only one who thinks the new AM that started a week before me is a complete and utter dingbat. Honestly can't stand her. Yay woo! Etc.

  • I just typed a load of stuff about how great my new job is (3 weeks in) but decided not to post it in fear of jinxing it.

Seriously happy with the way things are going though, its a massive difference to my last job.
  • Great stuff.
