On the old Maroon Forum, I posted a couple of threads which tasked people with picking two tracks to add to a forum Spotify playlist. They went down pretty well, and we got some interesting choices. For those that are new (or those that don't remember):

    2009 - The Edge 2009 Playlist
    2010 - The Edge 2010 Playlist
2012 - Bear and Badger - Episode One (Hacksaws of Trepidation)

Will post full tracklistings for the above later. Not sure why I didn't do one for 2011 - probably something to do with the crappy old Edge forum.

Now, it's time for the B&B to do the same thing. It can be any two tracks, of any length, from any year. They must be on Spotify though! If they aren't, I will ask you to re-pick.

    Happy listening!

Kendrick Lamar - Sing About Me, I'm Dying of Thirst

Really tough to choose a Kendrick track, but I wanted him on here. Tough because there is a real story to the album, about his life and how living in Compton has affected him. The tracks on their own are good but with the deeper story behind them they are elevated higher. That particular track is broken into two sections. Sing About Me is a story in three parts, Verse 1 is told from the perspective of a friend's (Dave) brother. Dave gets killed and his brother is looking for retaliation. This is Dave’s brother telling Kendrick that he appreciated the love that Kendrick had for Dave.

Verse 2 comes from the perspective of a person called Keisha’s sister. She is mad at Kendrick for writing a song about her sister (on Section 80) without even knowing her properly. She talks about how she is living the same life as her sister, as a prostitute, and is proud of her living and what she does. She claims not to be just another woman lost in the system. She says her sister died in vain. Unlike Dave’s brother she doesn’t want to be sung about on the album. She feels great and says she’ll never fade away….but then she does, her vocals slowly fade out in to obscurity…perhaps she died or just became another nameless “hoodrat”.

While the first two verses are about people the siblings of people that Kendrick has rapped about, the third verse is about Kendrick himself. He speaks to Dave’s brother, agreeing that Dave was like a brother to him. He speaks to Keisha’s sister saying that Keisha’s story was the one that drove him to write something that powerful and real – he didn’t mean to offend. He talks of how music saved him and pulled him away from the drugs, money and guns.

Part two of the song, Dying of Thirst, is all about how he's fed up with the continual hunting and being hunted of black on black violence in the community. People getting killed for no reason, then revenge being sought and the cycle continues...he describes what it's like in that environment.

Anyway....that was a bit unexpected! Sorry, thought it should have some context.
I'm falling apart to songs about hips and hearts...

My two tracks of the year owing to the fact that I've spent many hours learning and practising them on my guitar are:

    Radiohead: True Love Waits.
    Jeff Buckley: Hallelujah.

You'll probably want to split them up on the playlist as they're both sad, slow and acoustic guitar and voice based. No idea if they're on Spotify either.
