I'm intrigued but worried about this. It looks pretty and the whole "team-based racing" thing is a good idea (Grid used it to great effect) but it also seems to look like a Forza Horizon/Test Drive type affair, which just wouldn't suit the team thing.

Still, we have seen very little so I don't want to judge it too harshly. I'll definitely keep my eye on this.

I think it looks good and I'm not really sure how negatives can be gleaned just from that?

I'm not a huge racing fan and I'm not really worried about being able to open the hood and check out the engine...during the presentation stuff he was banging on about how detailed all the models are, and I could give less of a shit.

But, it looks like they are trying to create a kind of persistant world of racing, online, which is interesting. So we'd have team B&B, and could take on other racers from around the world...you could even have Racer 1 doing the first 10 laps/10 mile sprint of the race, then Racer 2 takes over.

Not related to this especially, but the idea of an persistent online racing world has been tried a few times through various means. Most notably Test Drive but NFS/Forza has elements as well.

It always sounds really cool, but unless you're way into it pretty superficial in practice.

Horizon nailed it for me which came as a shock. More of that with a few tweaks will scratch all my racing itches...

Fear of the frequent ineptitude of open-world physics. That I enjoyed Test Drive: Unlimited at all is a credit to its concept, looks and engine sounds.

Car models look staggering but the actual driving needs a lot of work. We're well beyond the point where devs have to worry about physics. The major issue with most driving games is how to translate real world steering onto a joystick. Some get it right (Polyphony and Turn 10) and some get it horribly wrong, TDU, Shift and Shift 2 being the ultimate examples, where it was so bad they had to include options to adjust all the sensitivities, and they still were never just right.

Finding the balanceÂ betweenÂ realism and accessibility is the tricky bit. I'd say the world is much more important to me than how connected the game is to my friends list, the lack of any detail about that suggests that this is probably a long way off. Graphics looked great, but watching an avatar get into a car every time will get old very quickly.

THe thing that impressed me on the rendering was the anal level of detail. They even had the raised lettering on the tyres for tread wear and sizes! As for the wandering round the car, I'm hoping that's not scripted and, like PGR and TDU, you get to wander round at leisure.

Ach, it'll probably be good, but lacking somewhere. Evolution always make fun handling models to drive with. It'll be enough to appease the launch-day'ers.

I think Ali's the other Porsche 2000 fan? The weird thing about 2000 was that it had no immediate relation. The fourth NfS was a pretty decent arcade racer; albeit with in-car views.

I'm pretty doubtful of the veracity of that footage but we'll see.

Have to lol at the idea of a Sony wanting a first party studio to make a realistic racer, then asking the Motorstorm guys to do it and telling Yamauchi to do one.

I suspect the footage is pretty spot on. Driving games are always used to show off a new console and replay mode in GT5 was ludicrously gorgeous already.

It'll be the handling and gameplay that will make or break it. Getting it to look that good should be the easy part.

Possibly / probably. However, with the extra grunt from the specs of the PS4 I don't think it's impossible for that to be in game footage either.

I'd rather they used that extra grunt on the handling model and driver AI especially rather than the weave on the carbon-fibre, but that doesn't ever seem to be a priorty sadly.

I think what I'm getting at is it's one thing to do shiny like that (the environment and lighting) on a replay and another to do it while hurtling down the road at 120mph.

We'll see, it's certainly within the bounds of possible.

I know people want different things from different racing games, but I just want eyeball melting Burnout 2 really, not that fussed about the pretty.
