There must be an appropriate meme for the YAY!/oh feeling when an unexpected Driveby Truckers album drops but it's wall to wall Petterson Hood. I think there's one Cooley original on it. I get that he's not as prolific as Hood, but if 58% of the DBTs stuff is penned & sung by Hood, 32% is by Cooley, 8% by Isbell and 2% by Tucker etc, it's no exaggeration to say that a genuine 12 track best of would have more Isbell & Cooley on than Hood (and Isbell was only in the band for 3 albums out of like 14). I like PT and he has some primo bangers, plus he's always been the de facto frontman for my shout for the best rock band of the noughties, but I wish he'd stop trying to force it. Write less or bin more.
I might be on one for a few posts, usually goes this way when I get a whiff of the Truckers. Cooley on possibly my favourite southern rock song ever.
"So keep your drawers on girl, it 'ain't worth the fight/by the time you've dropped them I'll be gone and you'll right where they fall the rest of your life". #LargeOof.
I've never really listened to Hiss Golden Messenger (the odd covermount cd maybe), but I've had a mental note in the noggin to do so for years. I listened to School Daze: A Fundraiser for Durham Public Schools Students yesterday (live album on Tidal), and full wow, they're incredible. Give it a go if you yearn for more Street Legal era Dylan. Would love to know what Muggins makes of them but he seems to be away on his travels again.
The Kurt 'n John colab is decent, he's put Speed of the Sound of Loneliness on the EP too. I like Vile and I love his influences (his What's in my Bag stuff is always up my alley), but he hasn't released a knockout solo album just yet.
Just catching up with the DBT posts. Agree with all of that. Funny when a band goes from one of your favourites to one you just don't really care about. Don't hate them or anything just not interested in their stuff after the 00's.
Will put together a spotify playlist tonight - reckon you're dead on about it being mostly Cooley.
When you got movies like Tom Cruise in them, you can't lose
