Didn't he explain to Bran and Meera back in series 5 or 6 that the children of the forest stopped his transformation half way through or something using dragon glass?

I may have well filled the gap in myself tbh!

Yeah, the Children stopped him turning with the same method that they used to turn the first man.

The reason he survives is that he only turned a tiny bit. There's that line, ‘Thank god I only turned a tiny bit’. And if you turn a tiny bit of this, you're no wight.
