Footer links tend to be the lowest value links in a site as people tried to spam them years ago, plus those types of links can come from a range of sites that aren't necessarily related to web design.

You would be better off linking on your company name as that would highlight your brand to people looking at who designed your client sites I.e. you.

In addition, by trying to link off a term like web design you are presenting Google with an unnatural link profile. Most link profiles are predominantly the URL of your site or your brand name, with a smattering of other keywords based on the content you have shared. Links like web design are just to obviously spammy to ever generate real value.

If I was you I'd concentrate less on this and create a blog or something and talk about specifics about how your web design can help businesses. Create case studies thy mention businesses in your region. Ensure your office is in Google Local and your clients give you good reviews on Google local, that will help more than those links at the bottom of the page.

Yes I'm not sure how that semi colon got there, it's not on the real sites.

Some of them are very low trafficked sites sure, some I would have thought are busy enough to not fall below Google's bar, though I dunno how high that bar is.

I'm days away from launching a much better one. You can have a look then? When I'm less mortally ashamed?

    That is quite interesting...

The one thing I kinda hated about Drupal, was how nasty it looked at it's base...
Now I'm no PHP expert, and I can just about understand advanced theming, but doing anything fancy with Drupal views is undeniably painful work...

But Drupal's WYSIWYG OOP CMS system is vastly underrated. A little esoteric, but it has a LOT of potential... You can just about create ANY type of website with Drupal if you plan it correctly, but the work needed to theme pages currently terrifies noobs and can frustrate experts...

If they couple the 'Fisher Price' DB admin tools to a sensible MVC system, it will instantly look like a better prospect than Wordpress, and it's (somewhat) inflexible content creation suite, and may well start to look like an enterprise project target...

I don't mind themeing Views, I'm probably not doing anything advanced but what I do do seems straightforward. EDIT using Display Suite helps massively with creating and exposing classes outside of Views.

One of the main focuses for D8 is improving the UX, which wouldn't be hard.

The other thing that puts off new users with Drupal is its almost total emptiness of features you'd expect to find, like even something as simple as a WYSIWYG. They stick resolutely to the core distribution only containing core. There's a lot more going into D8 core as I mentioned but in the mean time the Drupal Spark (endorsed by Dries) distribution is a great starting point. It's a shame things like Softaculous don't use that distribution instead of vanilla core.

    https://drupal.org/project/spark

    There's even a version for D8

In fact Distributions in general are massively overlooked.

    Ah... yeah...

The last time I looked at Drupal, 7 was in beta, so all the interesting modules were only available for version 6. Quite an education, that.

Apparently, this - http://www.mtv.co.uk/ - is Drupal. You can confirm it by examining the markup. : )

Take a look at Craft and Twig.

I haven't used it yet, but looks interesting. I installed Craft had a quick play around, but haven't got time yet to learn a new templating language.

http://buildwithcraft.com - great UI for a CMS, and a Live Preview that works very well

    http://twig.sensiolabs.org - Looks quite powerful

The Whitehouse and The Economist are other big gets.

Closer to home http://www.newcastle.gov.uk also use it, which helps me loads when describing the set up. Mention Drupal and 9 faces out of 10 screw into puzzlement.

I still find some modules that would be super useful that haven't been updated from 6-7. God I hope the D8 modules are automatically or easily compatible. I should know that really. If they're not F that S.

By the by, sorry for going on, but everyone who "knows" me knows if I like something I get a bit fannish about it, ahem.

Wow, that's really quite astounding. I bet I could find a Parish council with a more interesting design.

And that's based on Drupal as well I notice. Scalability, yeah boi!
  • Bah looks like ill have to buy a wordpress theme after all. the free theme im using looks like its not going to be updated to allow separate galleries(multiple galleries from the same source).bah.

its a full page photography theme and lets you create galleries of flickr etc. but only one gallery of each type. so if i upload my images to the site that counts as one source so i cant split the photos in categories. It looks theme specific (going on what was said on the website). i dont have time to learn to do any coding mods on the theme (bar changing the copyright notice etc)

It was for a .ki domain. Not as bad as .tt though, those are about £4,500 a year.

Not tried out Craft, bit Twig is part of Symfony, so I've used that a fair bit. I always used to say there was no point in templating engines for PHP, since the language is essentially one, but Twig has managed to change my mind.

As an aside: I'm surprised there aren't more CMS' using in-place editing.

Some obvs mistakes but personally I can't believe these were shat out in 2013. The winner was designed to show bad heuristics so I don't think it should be there. But hey.
