Right, so are the protagonists in games actually getting younger or just looking younger because I'm getting older? Temporary trend or are games going to be reminding me what an old fart I am from here on out? -

Back in the day, protagonists were just a guy of indistinguishable age, right?
Today, they're modelled on young, hip, attractive 20 somethings. -
Poor g.man has had this for years. -
Depends on the game, innit. Joe Blade and the Green Beret guy looked older, but then there was Alex Kidd, Kid Gloves, Magic Pockets and Skool Daze.
Today we've got the three you posted, sure, but there's Joel in The Last of Us, Kane & Lynch, the GoW chaps, and so on.
Funnily enough, I was thinking about the reverse of this in movies. Some of them (RED, Expendables, Arnie & Sly's latest) actually highlight it and make a joke of it, but these days movie action heroes are in there 40s, 50s, 60s. -

I always thought this was a brave move. Did it harm sales, having an aged protagonist? Probably not.
In RPGs with facial sliders, I always go for the wrinkled brow and max crows feet option. I don't want to play as some young welp, I can't identify with them.
It wasn't until I hit my thirties that I realised you could unlock rewards by exploring the map -
Kazuma in the Yakuza games is in his mid thirties I believe? Not that it's old. Well, that's ancient as far as Japanese protags tend to go. I remember the cast of FFVII taking the piss out of Cid for being in his 30s.
Big Boss in Peace Walker is 39. And of course Snake in MGS4 is essentially an OAP.

Army of Two, Kane & Lynch, The Last of Us, Just Cause(?), Mercenaries, Unit 13, Gears of War, Metal Gear Solid, Street Fighter, Tekken, Dishonored(?), Batman(?), 007 Blood Stone, Left 4 Dead, all feature protagonists well into their 30s, 40s and 50s, and I'm not even trying.Sasukekun wrote:I can't name a single game where you play as an old bloke.....unless you include Bruce Willis' Apocalypse? -

Send messageThere's obviously still plenty of old farts in games, but is it just me that finds controlling a character younger than you are a bit weird? Up until now I've always controlled ones that were roughly the same or older. Maybe it's just conditioning but that was always fine. Now I'm noticing them looking younger it's starting to feel slightly wrong in some way. -
