I have copies of Salo, The Devils and Caligula hidden away. However my daughters are 19 and 20 now - have just kept them hidden out of habit. I doubt they would be affected by them. Caligula has some out and out porn scenes in it though.

That's a specific, Hardcore version right? Definitely the version I'd buy too.

When I were a kid I watched all sorts of stuff that I probably shouldn't've - Robocop when I was 6 or 7, Shining when I was 9 or so, had all the Nightmare on Elm St films by early teens. There wasn't really any censorship going on, swearing was much more frowned upon than gore or shooty violence. I think my parents had faith in my understanding that these are stories and not real. Either that or they were incompetent.

I don't think any child would be particularly fussed either way about Salo, it's a film that only really becomes dark when you're an adult, I think.

Having said all the above, if/when I have a child I'll certainly stop them watching stuff like the above until they're mid teens or so.
  • My dad slow-fast forwarded the sex scene the first time I was allowed to watch The Terminator (VHS go-faster-lines speed). After the ridiculousness of the speedy writhing and frenzied hand clenching, which neither of us acknowledged out loud, I think he realised DIY censorship was misguided.

Anyone remember the 'book of the film' novels they used to release? I read both the Terminator ones between watching T1 and T2. Both had scenes in that popped up in dvd features/deleted scenes/director's cuts, so I guess someone wrote them based on not-quite-finished screenplays?

I remember reading IT when I was in year 7, which was allowed in an 'any reading is good' capacity, but wowee some of those chapters weren't really suitable considering I wasn't allowed to watch The Meaning of Life until year 8.

  • Oh god, I remember hearing about IT. Never read it myself, but I remember hearing about particular scenes and thinking ‘holy shit’.

Yeah you shouldn’t be reading that at year 7...

It's the Imperial Edition - 3 discs with different versions. It's one of those films that has a pile of versions. There's some great extras including an excellent commentary from McDowell and plenty of other docs.

To think it started off as a Gore Vidal script with top class actors (O'Toole & Gielgud are in it) and ended up being directed by Tinto Brass with producer Bob Guccionne (of Penthouse) going on set after hours and shooting porno scenes with the pets. The story of its creation is hilarious.
  • Took the boy to his first Parkrun today. The junior one that’s 2k (1.25miles). He was last pretty much the whole way round but overtook a crying child on the last corner to take 93rd place out of 94! Smashed it! Really proud of him though, he ran non-stop and had a smile on his face the whole time. Even had time to tell the marshal lady who was walking at the back a joke:

“How do you get Pikachu on a bus? By poking him on...”

  • Yep, cracking photo.
  • Such jumper, I love it.

I was all going off on Tilly's school's Twitter account yesterday (or maybe Facebook).  Apparently year 6 are performing a Christmas song that includes lines like 'you know it's your mummy and daddy dressed up as santa and he's not real, right?' (paraphrasing).  Mums have gone bertie, and rightly so imo, it's set to be performed in from of all year groups.  I tried to get my wife to just write THIS IS BOLLOCKS but she refused (rather than pretending to call my bluff).  Some of the posts are hilarious, whoever picked the song is getting it today.

Haha. Isla went through a phase of threatening "I will cut you" if she thought I was being naughty.

  • She then cheerfully informed me that she "would eat me up with a fork".

I also enjoyed the chat with her yesterday...
