Do Boardgames Dream of Miniature Porn?
  • So many games are not great for just two people. I guess to replace dice as the primary random factor many games need a player 3.
  • Sorry, should have said that this purchase is to add to my 3-4 player collection, although if it can be played with 2 also then all the better.

Does Small World see much action Tempy? My fear is that the theme may discourage the family, who all seem to struggle with fantasy and sci-fi themes.

That is the joy of Agricola, can be played by 1-5 players and scales perfectly, and who doesn't like building their own little farm??

Small World looks like a brilliant family game despite not playing with any. We kind of muddled through last weekend, and as the game owner it was clear I hadn't played before, which gave everyone the opportunity to interject. Such as the merchant card, it wasn't right I get coins for my in decline areas: not when it was my turn anyway! Such is the experience that the game actually never lost momentum on replay value till we realised it was midnight, six hours after we started the game.

I'd say the fantasy theme is pretty much moot, if anything you can laugh at oxymorons such diplomatic orks. The theme could be folklore or horror and it wouldn't make a difference. The game is actually really simple when played properly even though some races & combos can create great advantages for players and complications for the rules of turn. Rewinding though is not difficult.

Gonna go play this with family at the weekend, will post my thoughts, there's five of us involved too so should be interesting.

  • Rules can be complex at times, but always playing by the general rather than the exception always helps... like merchant, special powers only effect active races, unless stated.

I bought Dominion. Never really played an exclusively card-based game before and it certainly seems a little expensive for a large pack of cards (and big box) but I look forward to playing it, considering the vocal support it has here - girlfriend says she's interested in trying it too which is a massive bonus after she said Carcassone looked 'nerdy'.

Carcassone is boss. Far from nerdy it's just thieves, farmers and soldiers.

Yeah, I love it. I'm sure she'll like it too given the chance, just judging a book by its cover.
  • I hate you all.
King of Tokyo is good for a quick thrashing by the missus. She keeps wanting to play Pandemic, which is good as it is great and wasn't a waste of money, but....Now I am looking at all kinds of board/card games (the new X-Wing war game and Android: Netrunner from Fantasy Flight Games) and it might start to get a bit silly. I am resisting the urge so far and will play the above 2 until we get bored of them.
I knew I shouldn't have come into this thread.

    EDIT*
And I now I have just found Zombicide and it is getting harder to resist another purchase...I might role a die to decide.

It has hit me the same, I actually have more board games on my radar at the moment than I do video games. Similarly I haven't bought a current video game since Trials was released in April, but have bought at least a board game a month since March.

Played Pandemic last night, first time with 5 Epidemics, got destroyed.

Ordered Ca$h & Guns and Dixit Journey this afternoon!

Have you had a look on BGG to see if there are any gaming groups near you? There is one that meets weekly in a pub a stones throw from my house, but so far I haven't had the courage to attend.

  • I know of two in Nottingham but the attendees... well. Last I looked at them the were full of long haired folk with neck beards and questionable body hygiene and it put me off a little.

heh. my gf hated small world, and doesn't get along with carcassone that much, yet somehow, even though I'd argue it's more nerdy and complex, she loves dominion.

Not that it'll help your wallet, but the game really opens up with the expansions. (You thought it was pricey for vanilla, try adding one or two expansions!)

Between Some Guy and us, we now have vanilla, Intrigue and Seaside. Aiming at picking up one of the smaller expansions next week, alchemy or the money one who's name eludes me.

Really like what Intrigue brings to the table. Some really awesome combos to be able to do very cool stuff. Seaside is a bit mental, there's some meh stuff in there, but there's also some cracking, and game changing ideas in there. The duration cards, and pirate ships and stuff are a fun addition.

Had another 6 hour session last night. Tried all the suggested variants in Seaside. After a week playing Intrigue only, and going easy on the attack cards, it was a rude shock to come back to a variant with 4-5 attack cards in it.

2-3 hands each of all the variants and then finished the evening with a made up combo, everyone picking a card from one of the 3 decks. Naturally, it was OP as all fuck, and made for some mental turns. Throne Room + Fishing village + Ironworks + Market or Treasury, etc etc. Bridge and Pirate Ship were in there too.

    Good times.
I'm still great and you still love it.
  • Haha, yes.  Throne room is by far my favorite card.
  • Post those things you were gonna post already.
I'm still great and you still love it.
  • The game shop man I spoke to reccomended prosperity over all the other expansions.

Also if you like throne room there's an even better version of it in prosperity!

Played Dominion for the first time yesterday – really enjoyed it!
Took a little while getting to grips with it but could see the potential for a lot of fun games.

Also played Zombies!!! with an expansion and modified ruleset (the vanilla rules are apparently broke).
With 6 players it was an epic session and a lot of fun – plenty of backstabbing going on as we all raced towards the helipad.

A Dominion question – is there an expansion that increases the number of players to 6?
  • Girlfriend got me Libertalia for my birthday, looks interesting but I'm not see what to describe it as.

It'd be messy, but I don't see why you couldn't just add more victory cards to the pile, and maybe adjust the game finish rules. I think it's only vanilla and Intrigue (and maybe seaside) of the expansions that come with the basic victory cards, so comboing those could do it. Don't know what it'd do to the rhythm of play though. It can vary wildly as it is even within regular limits.
I'm still great and you still love it.
  • I don't think it would work well as a six player game. To me it seems like a game that is not hampered that much by playing only with two so I think the game is far better suited to the smaller crowd.

You should have enough copper (42?) and estates (18) to make It doable? Alteratively you can get a base pack which contains only base cards to buff up the money/victory cards.

Ah, just wondered as i'm not properly familiar with it yet. I'll stick to 4 max methinks.

As for 6 player games, I bought the old Games Workshop Judge Dredd board game on ebay last week :D
  • Alan Turing edition of Monopoly made it to my Xmas list this year. I'm a sucker for Monopoly special editions.
  • Someone recommend me a good two-player game for me and the wife to play.

We have Ticket to Ride and Settlers of Catan.
  • Pandemic is a good one for co-op play.
  • I didn't post this the other day because I thought I might be getting ripped off but...
I was looking through the Best 20 Boardgames of the 2000's on some site the other day and came across:
    Heroscape
It's out of production, but sounded really interesting and with prices ranging from £50 to £100 on ebay and Amazon, I thought 'Nope."
Anyway when searching I came across some odd site called crestcooperative.co.uk, (some kind of charity shop) that said they had one master set box for £18 so I crossed my fingers and ordered it.
Well it turned up today and it is brand new, the box is a bit worn and bashed but the actual contents are completely un-opened. YAY!

Has anyone else heard of it or played it?

  • We played some 2 player Dominion with a few different cards.

    Things we learned:
    - I don't like being pummelled by Torturer, and this entertains SG.
    - With the right cards, the opening 2 hands from your first 10 cards can make or break the game. Getting 5 copper straight up can change things. Getting enough to get gold early can change things.

We had a lot of fun, and quite powerful, cards in play. But the first game we played with torturer, I was slow on the uptake, and SG had 5 to spend early. With Fishing village in play (mulitple actions and extra coin across 2 turns) I found myself on the back foot quickly. Playing again, and with me getting 5 to spend early, we were much more even on the torturers and I won (not by much, but still).

Played another variant and we had all these grand ideas, and certainly SG got a chance to pretty much do what he wanted, but through getting a couple of silver early, I lucked out on getting gold early, and even with all the multiaction and buy and card draw at his disposal, a tactic of taking it back to "first principles" and buying shitloads of gold let me slam.

A good reminder that there is defo an element of luck to the game.

    getting another expansion next week.
I'm still great and you still love it.
  • First two turns are mega, you either get 5/2 or 3/4. You always buy silver.
