    About This Game
Stardew Valley is an open-ended country-life RPG!

You've inherited your grandfather's old farm plot in Stardew Valley. Armed with hand-me-down tools and a few coins, you set out to begin your new life. Can you learn to live off the land and turn these overgrown fields into a thriving home? It won't be easy. Ever since Joja Corporation came to town, the old ways of life have all but disappeared. The community center, once the town's most vibrant hub of activity, now lies in shambles. But the valley seems full of opportunity. With a little dedication, you might just be the one to restore Stardew Valley to greatness!

    Features
Turn your overgrown field into a lively farm!  Raise animals, grow crops, start an orchard, craft useful machines, and more! You'll have plenty of space to create the farm of your dreams.
Improve your skills over time.  As you make your way from a struggling greenhorn to a master farmer, you'll level up in 5 different areas: farming, mining, combat, fishing, and foraging. As you progress, you'll learn new cooking and crafting recipes, unlock new areas to explore, and customize your skills by choosing from a variety of professions.
Become part of the local community. With over 30 unique characters living in Stardew Valley, you won't have a problem finding new friends! Each person has their own daily schedule, birthday, unique mini-cutscenes, and new things to say throughout the week and year. As you make friends with them, they will open up to you, ask you for help with their personal troubles, or tell you their secrets! Take part in seasonal festivals such as the luau, haunted maze, and feast of the winter star.
Explore a vast, mysterious cave.  As you travel deeper underground, you'll encounter new and dangerous monsters, powerful weapons, new environments, valuable gemstones, raw materials for crafting and upgrading tools, and mysteries to be uncovered. Breathe new life into the valley. Since JojaMart opened, the old way of life in Stardew Valley has changed. Much of the town's infrastructure has fallen into disrepair. Help restore Stardew Valley to it's former glory by repairing the old community center, or take the alternate route and join forces with Joja Corporation.
Court and marry a partner to share your life on the farm with.  There are 10 available bachelors and bachelorettes to woo, each with unique character progression cutscenes. Once married, your partner will live on the farm with you. Who knows, maybe you'll have kids and start a family?
Spend a relaxing afternoon at one of the local fishing spots.  The waters are teeming with seasonal varieties of delicious fish. Craft bait, bobbers, and crab pots to help you in your journey toward catching every fish and becoming a local legend!
Donate artifacts and minerals to the local museum.
Cook delicious meals and craft useful items to help you out. With over 100 cooking and crafting recipes, you'll have a wide variety of items to create. Some dishes you cook will even give you temporary boosts to skills, running speed, or combat prowess. Craft useful objects like scarecrows, oil makers, furnaces, or even the rare and expensive crystalarium.
Customize the appearance of your character and house.  With hundreds of decorative items to choose from, you'll have no trouble creating the home of your dreams!
Over two hours of original music.

  • Thought of a proper harvest moon-like game does appeal but then I heard there's some monster killing or something, which is exactly the kind of pointless shit later games added after the seminal Friends of Mineral Town.

Give me a farm, some place to fish, some place to mine, a village and a host of awesome characters with actual depth and I'm there. The other stuff can get fucked.

Can anyone who has played this confirm any depth to relationship and character-building stuff?

It's fun and relaxing. The monster killing stuff is just throwaway blob whacking really. I'm not sure you have to any of it.
  • Yeah, I think you can buy most of the materials you need from the mines anyway. Also not really a fan of that type of stuff but it wasn't too bad here, it's very basic and gives a little variety during the winter.

edit: and for £12 I think it's worth a shot.

Me and Franny fancy this, unsure whether to dive in on the Bone or wait for Switch to see if it controls better on that.

Looks like a good game, shit OP. Hello Pie, how have you been?

Controls are just directions and one or two buttons. Don't think Switch would improve it.
  • shit OP. Hello Pie, how have you been?
Only shite because not 100% sure there wasn't a thread already. Didn't wanna put the effort in just to be sent a link to one, it will meet your standards!

I'm good, still about, mostly lurking. :)

I read somewhere that inventory management and stuff like watering your plants was a faff with a pad compared to the mouse controls. I'm making big assumptions that the Switch touch screen would help that.

@Pie my standards of a winning OP require at least one picture. You can do it.

Watering the plants is a faff because you just have to do it manually, I think it'll be a pain regardless of the control. Pretty sure I've been playing with a pad, not sure at the moment, though.
  • You can get the Watering Can upgrade fairly quickly. I think I gave up in Winter when I played.

And work towards irrigation systems if memory serves?

  • Yeah there is an irrigation system. Also something you can put in the soil to have a chance of water staying over night.
  • I been gonna do a thread for this for ages.

It's great, buy it. That's really all you need to know.

I've loved Terraria and Minecraft with a pad, so I'm well used to a bit of inventory management hell. It's probably just me finding more reasons yo buy a Switch to be honest.

I'm semi serious about the spoiler by the way, I don't want to know all the upgrades, unlocks, late game efficiency strats etc. as I'd rather find them out myself/ponder over them with Franny than just be told about them.

If memory serves then you might have to shut your eyes in the intro video thingy as it shows you a fairly fully developed farm setup to aim for...

I love me a Harvest Moon game, but their entries of late have been a bit pants. Fortunately Rune Factory 4 on the 3DS saved the day as that is an absolute cracker of a game. It's what I'll be playing over Christmas on portable, in fact.

So I also liked the look of Stardew Valley, but I always prefer this particular style of game on a handheld. The recent news this is making its way to the Switch was just what I wanted to hear. Looking forward to it.
    Get schwifty.
  • Did you know that Harvest Moon is now a shameless cash in and that proper harvest moon is now Story of Seasons?

Not that you need HM as Stardew is ace.

I have Story of Seasons and might also be giving that a bash over Christmas.

    Aye, been following that saga.

It's weird - for games which I've enjoyed so much, I couldn't be less interested in their continued development. They reached a peak and moved past what I wanted aeons ago and found a new audience, which is fair enough I suppose.

So I keep following them and every time sigh when they refuse to make copies of games I have massive sentimental attachment to.
  • Playing snes harvest moon (via emulator) is one of my best gaming memories. It really got its hooks in. Later versions have overdone a bit I reckon.

Good thing about stardew is you can pretty much do as you please, there's no requirement to mine, or fight beasties or [spoilers].

  • SNES, GBA and then the N64 / PS1 versions were all variations on the same game, basically. The GBA version had better character depth than the SNES one (characters which were copied wholesale for the Psone and n64 games) and was less fiddly than the 3D versions on the home consoles so, for me, it's the perfect version (besides some poor translation).

But yeah, the SNES one is also tight.
