After doing a bit with Ableton I decided last month to switch to Logic pro. Both are exceptionally good programmes but with my mate (the one mentioned in the dance thread) using Logic it means I have an immediate contact for those little niggly questions, plus it means we can colab easier in the future.
So far so good. I watched the D.Ramirez how to tutorials which are excellent even though I have no desire to make similar music to him.
I have got my head 99% around busing, a few of the filters and Ultrabeat.
Ive got the goal of making 5 tracks worthy of sending to labels in 6-8 months. Completely possible.
I think the logical next step is to pick up a midi keyboard. Any suggestions?
Money wise I was aiming for less than £100. I dont play so really dont need anything epic, likelyhood is I will be inputting a chord or two at a time. Im not going to be doing any epic solos anytime soon.
Essentially I just want something a bit quicker than clicking it all in on a grid.
Nah, I'd get the Akai myself for definite so I'd recommend that. There are cheaper Akais which I suppose would be fine if it was a laptop only set-up, but they look a bit insubstantial.
Should probably listen to Lawro, I don't generally make electronic music so the twiddly knobs etc are wasted on me. Having said that, I've been using a larger M-audio keystation for years and it's been great.
The fact that you can prepare your own loops and perform them 'into' Live with MIDI controllers, then correct any mistakes and add more detailed automation just sets it ahead of anything else available. For a little advance prep you're not copying and pasting all day.

Got love for Ableton here too. Been using Logic for years as well so i'm normally jumping between the two of em (which can get confusing seeing as they're so different).
Ableton are the first DAW in ages that seemed to have tried something new. Very good for electronic music, i've only tinkered about on it but its great for getting ideas down fast.
It has a device called Drum Rack which is basically the same thing, it doesn't have a drum machine/step sequencer interface though.
It might be worth noting if you aren't familiar with Abelton that you can import the groove from any piece of music. I'm not sure if any other DAW allows for this.
bboy spaz lol

A quick question for you guitarists out there, where's a good place to get tabs from? I was using Ultimate Guitar for their ASCII-type tabs, but I've recently downloaded Guitar Pro on my iPhone and in order to load tabs into that, they need to be in .gp3, .gp4, .gp5, .gpx or .ptb format, whatever they are. Ultimate Guitar charges for the 'pro' stuff, so any tips on where I can get these types of tabs for free?
